Families Invited to FREE Bethlehem Village

Community Invited To Visit ‘Bethlehem Village’

Before Black Friday, before malls and even before Santa Claus, there was Bethlehem Village. First Baptist Church at Clifton and Andrews Avenue  in Collingdale will once again present tours that will take visitors back in time to the very first Christmas.
On Friday and Saturday evenings December 10, 11, 17 and 18, local residents are invited to bring the entire family to the special event. A 'Shepherd Guide' will lead them on a 30-minute tour that will include mini-dramas at various locations around the church campus. Through the dramas, guests will hear the true story of Christmas as presented in the Bible.
At the end of the tour, people will visit the 'Bethlehem Marketplace' where they’ll can enjoy some light refreshments as well as visit with Bethlehem merchants. Tours will run  6:30  to 9 p.m. on the scheduled nights. There is no cost for the event. For more information, call the church office at 610-586-3563.

Railroads And Christmas- A Perfect Pair!

StARR, (St. Alban’s Railroad,) will steam into its 20th shining holiday season in 2010 with their annual open house for five (5) weekends featuring the largest HO scale model railroad layout in Delaware County. Regular visitors take note: display dates this year are a little different than past years. There will be one (1) evening open house on Tuesday, Dec 28, 7:30 to 9:30. We will be open the following days from 1 to 4 PM: Dec. 11 & 12, Jan. 2, 15 &16, 29 & 30, Feb. 12 & 13, 26 & 27. Best time to visit is between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
NO ADMISSION is charged, but donations are appreciated. This season, return visitors will note the Wilson Coke Plant in progress, a meat packing plant in progress, a new trucking facility in Parkesburg, an operational car shop in Chadds Ford and a tunnel connecting Sonestown with Perkiomen Junction under construction, a great opportunity to see how the railroad is made. Techie alert: All switches on the main line are now controlled by computer assisted central dispatch. StARR’s 4000 square foot layout using "state of the art" Digital Command Control (DCC), fills a 50’ X 80’ room boasting 225 feet of four-track main line, 235 feet of branch line track and over 800 pieces of rolling stock.
A video camera equipped locomotive allows visitors to see the scenery from the engineer’s perspective. Realistic operations include modules featuring an operating transfer table, electronic turntable and three working freight yards with engine facilities among the large variety of equipment and eras featured in the eastern Pennsylvania scenery. StARR has often been termed the "most kid friendly" model railroad group in the greater metropolitan area because the club offers hands on displays, including "Thomas the Tank Engine" and sometimes offers visiting kids an opportunity to "operate" on the railroad.
StARR also operates the "Hogwart's Express" complete with British whistle, so feel free to bring the kiddies! Some of the club's most regular visitors (along with their parents,) frequently spend the entire afternoon. Don't miss the informational slide show, on computer, which supplies lot's of details for all visiting rivet counters. Sorry, StARR is not handicapped accessible at this time.
For more information call 610 275-4340 or visit our website: http://StARR-MRC.orgThe Saint Albans Railroad Fellowship (StARR) is an outreach ministry of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 3625 Chapel Road, Newtown Square, PA. The club has been meeting for 20 fun-filled years in the basement under the Thrift Shop. Membership, which includes members from the surrounding five (5) county area, is currently 22 strong ranging in age from 8 to 88. New members are always welcome.

Delco's FREE Festival Of Lights

Delaware County’s Annual Festival of Lights
Celebrates Three Decades of Holiday Cheer
Residents Can Enjoy Festive Displays Dec. 4-Jan.2

Delaware County’s annual Festival of Lights for Peace will literally brighten the holiday season when the illuminated display opens Saturday, Dec. 4, in Rose Tree Park, Upper Providence.
The public is invited to the Festival’s opening ceremony, 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4. The program will feature remarks by Delaware County Council, holiday music performed by the Springton Lake Middle School Chorus, members of the Armed Services, a visit from Santa Claus and the traditional lighting of the trees.
Each year for three decades, the Festival lights up the Rose Tree Park landscape with 70 sparkling trees and colorful displays that depict toy soldiers, a miniature Courthouse, Santa and his sleigh, Frosty the Snowman, and Snoopy and the Peanuts gang.
Council announced the 2010 Festival of Lights at the Tuesday, Nov. 30, council meeting, attended by members of the Delaware County Parks and Recreation Staff and Board members. The festival runs through Jan. 2 and is open 5:30-9:30 nightly. People are invited to walk through the displays, or observe them from their car.
“Every year, Council is pleased to present this holiday display for the enjoyment of our families,” said Council Chairman Jack Whelan. “The Festival of Lights is a wonderful, free activity for people of all ages. Seeing the lights – whether you are walking in the park, or driving by -- puts you in the holiday spirit.”
In 2009, the Festival of Lights was revitalized with the addition of 10,000 LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights donated by PECO. LED light bulbs save money and energy because they burn longer, use less energy and are less fragile and more resistant to cold winter temperatures.
Marc Manfre, Director of Parks and Recreation, credits the LED lights for enhancing the Festival while saving tax dollars.
“The addition of the LED lights has been wonderful,” said Manfre. “Not only have we lowered our environmental impact, but the new lights have saved money and enabled us to boost our display with some new improvements.”
The Festival of Lights is free and open to the public.
During the holiday season, residents are encouraged to remember the men and women serving in the Armed Forces by sending a card or letter of support. Cards, letters or phone cards can be placed in a special collection box in the lobby of the Delaware County Government Center in Media.
The holiday card collection box is located next to the Armed Services Tribute Wall, which pays tribute to local men and women stationed overseas. Addresses for individual service members posted on the Tribute Board are available from the Public Relations Department, Room 226, in the Government Center.
For information about the Armed Services greeting card collection, contact Amy Larkin at (610) 891-4931.

IF YOU GO: The Festival of Lights runs 5:30-9:30 pm nightly Dec. 4 through Jan. 2 in Rose Tree Park, Route 252, in Upper Providence. Opening ceremony is 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4. Admission is FREE. For information contact the Department of Parks and Recreation at (610) 565-7410.

FREE Expansion Help For Businesses

As a service to the community, Neumann University business students are offering to work with area executives and small business owners during the spring 2011 semester to develop plans to expand local businesses internationally.
From January through May, students will work closely with their professors, who themselves have extensive hands-on international management experience, to assess the company’s international competitiveness and create customized business expansion plans.
This service offers an unusual opportunity for local firms to expand their international markets. The highly interactive program will be tailored to the needs of each company and could include significant services: evaluation of the company’s export potential to Europe; analysis of the company’s competitiveness and the international trends in its industry; a profile of target countries and markets; identification of distributors and potential partners in Europe; and estimates of budget needs to expand into global markets.
Upon the completion of the plan, the students would travel to Europe to participate in its initial implementation.
“Global markets are expanding rapidly,” explains Professor Mehdi Hojjat, Ph.D., MBA, who will direct the program. “We offer local firms a unique opportunity to investigate their options for expansion into European markets.” Hojjat’s classes have been working with local businesses on international expansion and strategic planning since 2000.
Neumann University offers this service for FREE and with no obligation. For more information, contact Professor Hojjat at 610-558-5592 or hojjatm@neumann.edu  before Jan. 5.

Thursday, November 11, 2010
7:00 PM
Aston Township Municipal Building, 5021 Pennell Road

On Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 7 PM, Aston Township Historical Society (ATHS) is providing another exciting and informative free lecture entitled:  "Is There a Sears Roebuck & Co. Catalog Home in Your Neighborhood?".  This talk follows ATHS' brief quarterly meeting at Aston Township Municipal Building, 5021 Pennell Road, rear entrance, just south of Five Points.

This popular lecture has been developed and given by noted preservationist Jane L. S. Davidson.  It gives an overview of the innovative Sears Roebuck & Company enterprise that allowed untold thousands to achieve the American dream of owning their own home.  Jane uses a PowerPoint presentation to inform the audience of the changes in society and business in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region, and the nation as a whole, that enabled Sears to offer these unique products for over 30 years.  Jane introduces examples of a number of the designs available to the public, explains how it worked and gives tips to identify Sears Kit homes.  Jane's research assistants were fellow Chester County Historic Preservation Network, Inc. board members Dr. Elaine Husted, Ann Bedrick and Bruce Knapp.  A question and answer period will follow.  Everyone is welcome to this FREE event and to learn where these homes exist in our area!

The non-profit National Private Duty Association (NPDA) has announced that it will host a family caregiver education web conference entitled Caring for Someone with Alzheimer’s at Home on Nov. 16, 2010, at 8 p.m. EST.
