FREE Substance Abuse Education Seminar For Parents In May At DCIU

Straight Talk for Parents in Delaware County

What have Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Britney Spears, and Mel Gibson all had in common besides fame and fortune? A drug or alcohol problem. Unfortunately, many of our children are following their examples and getting involved with dangerous substances at increasingly earlier ages. The average age of a child’s first alcoholic drink is now 8-12 and a teenager’s first experiment with marijuana is occurring at age 13.
In a 2008 survey of youth by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, 40% of American teens reported that they believed prescription medications were safer to use than illicit drugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2007 that 45% of high school students, regardless of gender, were drinking alcohol, many to the point of regular bingeing.
So what is a parent, grandparent, or other caregiver to do?
Drug Free Pennsylvania, one of the Commonwealth’s premier non-profit organizations in educating adults about substance abuse, will be holding a FREE seminar for parents in partnership with the Delaware County  Intermediate Unit #25 (DCIU) 7 p.m. Tuesday, (May 17) at the Intermediate Unit, 200 Yale Avenue, Morton. Not only will participants learn about the kinds of substances now making their way into schools, communities and homes, but those in attendance will be taught strategies to help young people avoid the substances. So whether parents have preschoolers or new college students, there will be information for all.
The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency is providing the funding for the seminar and there is a need to pre-register as seating is limited. Register through Drug Free Pennsylvania’s website at http://www.drugfreepa.org/seminar/dciu.asp.
For information, contact Dr. Glenn Zehner, Educational Programs Director at zehner@drugfreepa.org.

FREE employment transition forums

My Career Transitions Announces Topics for April and May Forums at Penn State Great Valley

April 10, 2011:  Negotiation Strategies and Employment Agreements
Today's corporate culture of mergers, acquisitions, downsizings, and whirlwind personnel changes can leave people feeling vulnerable about the future. Many people will experience this volatility first-hand and will be sure to want to protect against it, either before change happens to them or most certainly when the time comes for their next career move.  Attend this forum and learn the basics of employment law in Pennsylvania, proactive negotiation strategies, and the fundamentals of restrictive covenants (i.e., non-competes, non-solicits, non-disclosure, etc.)

This forum is presented by Joann L. Drust, Esq., a 2010 Top Lawyer of the Main Line with nearly 25 years of legal experience in the fields of employment, labor, corporate and healthcare law. A seasoned trial attorney, Drust has represented hundreds of individual and institutional clients in cases ranging from labor disputes to professional negligence to civil rights. She is a principal in the employment law firm, Transition Strategies, LLC.  She is a member of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association. A native of Wilkes-Barre, Drust was graduated from Cornell University and earned her law degree from Dickinson School of Law.

WHERE
My Career Transitions meetings/forums are held the second* Saturday of the month, 9:45 – 11:45 a.m., at Penn State’s Great Valley campus, Main Building, 30 East Swedesford Road, Malvern, Pa, 19355. There is no meeting in August or December.  *The May 2011 meeting date was changed to the first Saturday so as not to conflict with Penn State’s annual graduation ceremony.

WHY
My Career Transitions was started in 2005 by Penn State alumnus Bart Ruff and was recently named the number one networking association by the Philadelphia Business Journal. In the past five years, the group has helped more than 4,000 area professionals navigate job transition. The group has accomplished this without funding; it relies on the efforts of a dozen volunteers who contribute their time and talent as a way to “pay it forward” and help others. Today, the meetings are presented in partnership with Penn State Great Valley’s Alumni Society.  On average, 130 people register for each monthly meeting.

MyCareerTransitions workshops are free but advanced registration is required.  For more information or to register, visit www.mycareertransitions.com.

The Shad Are Back This April at
Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center
Science Saturdays, Matinee Sundays and Shad Week events highlight
free family fun each weekend in April

PHILADELPHIA (March 4, 2011) – Have you ever wondered what kinds of fish call the Schuylkill River home? Join us for Shad Month at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center as April’s FREE educational programs highlight the American Shad and other fishy friends.
There are plenty of free family-friendly events to mark on your calendar this month. Shad Weekend is free and open to the public April 16-17. Events include a fishing clinic for all ages followed by a cooking demonstration on Saturday, April 16. Learn how to cook American Shad from either the Colonial or the Native American perspective as Heart to Hearth Cookery demonstrates 17th through 19th century cooking methods, practices, and recipes.
In addition to Shad Weekend, Science Saturdays are FREE and open to the public on April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 2 – 4 p.m. at half hour intervals. Parents and children will get “schooled” on the types of fish that inhabit the river through interactive experiments by FWWIC educators at the Interpretive Center’s state-of-the-art lab. Guests will create colorful fish rubbings and prints and will also help solve a fishy mystery.
The Fairmount Water Works Sunday Movie Matinee will screen “Finding Nemo” each Sunday in April at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center’s theater. This 2003 Disney classic features the voices of Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres and chronicles the underwater adventure of Marlin the clownfish in his search for his missing son Nemo.
The FWWIC will hold special programming on Earth Day Weekend, April 23-24.
“Shad Month is back this year with fun for the whole family,” says Karen Young, director of FWWIC. “From our FREE fishing clinic to cooking demonstrations to Earth Day celebrations, there is something for everyone at the Interpretive Center this April.”
The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is located at 640 Waterworks Drive in Philadelphia.  For information call 215-685-0723.
The Fairmount Water Works, the ideal location to learn more about the life in the river, was constructed in 1812 to pump water out of the Schuylkill River. Almost from the day the waterwheels began turning, the graceful neoclassical buildings and beautiful grounds made the place an international tourist attraction renowned for melding nature and technology. Today the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is the Delaware River Basin's watershed education hub, offering visitors information about the impact of water on their daily lives and how they in turn impact their water supplies. Located off Kelly Drive in Philadelphia's East Fairmount Park, the Interpretive Center features a variety of hands-on, highly interactive exhibits including a live view of the Fairmount Dam fish way and a flyover of the Schuylkill River watershed.
