FREE talk by famous paleontologist

DINOSAUR SCIENTIST DR. JOHN HORNER WILL GIVE FREE TALK AT ACADEMYOF NATURAL SCIENCES MAY 17

PHILADELPHIA—Prominent paleontologist Dr. John Horner, a dinosaur authority and the inspiration for a “Jurassic Park” character, will give a free talk about many people’s favorite extinct animal on Tuesday, May 17, at the Academy of Natural Sciences.
Horner, who has made major strides in understanding dinosaurs through modern biology, will discuss “Dinosaurs: How to Get Rid of Some Old Ones and Make Some New Ones.” The public is invited to a 6:30 p.m. reception, followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. Seating is limited. To register for the free event, call 215-299-1108 or sign up online at http://jackhornerdinosaurs.eventbrite.com/
Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Mont., Horner studies dinosaur evolution and ecology with a particular emphasis on growth and behavior. Using bone histology (microanatomy) and comparative morphology, Horner recently has provided evidence that there were actually fewer dinosaur species than previously thought.
He has discovered numerous dinosaur species, including, in the mid-1970s, the nesting site of a new dinosaur genus he and his co-discoverer named Maiasaura or “Good Mother Lizard.” The site contained the first dinosaur eggs found in the Western Hemisphere and provided the first clear evidence that some dinosaurs cared for their young.
Horner served as the technical advisor for the “Jurassic Park” films and was the partial inspiration for one of the lead characters, Dr. Alan Grant.
Horner’s presentation is the Academy’s annual Cheryl Beth Silverman Memorial Lecture and is co-sponsored by the International Exploration Soci

Help Keep Our Oceans Clean....

OUR BEACHES NEED YOUR HELP!
Join Adventure Aquarium & Clean Ocean Action
For the 26th Annual Spring Beach Sweeps - New Jersey Beach Cleanup

Adventure Aquarium and Clean Ocean Action are once again joining forces to clean up and protect New Jersey’s shore lines, during the 26th Annual Spring Beach Sweeps in Ventnor, NJ.
Did you know that it can take up to five years for cigarette butts to biodegrade, and up to 600 years for fishing line?  Every year, millions of pieces of trash end up along the New Jersey shore lines.  This debris does more than just ruin the aesthetic of our beautiful beaches - it poses a real threat to the native wildlife that become entangled in or accidentally ingests the litter.
If you would like to help save the lives of New Jersey's native marine life and help protect this fragile ocean environment, please join Adventure Aquarium and Clean Ocean Action on Saturday April 30 at Ventnor Beach, NJ.
Interested volunteers should meet at 9:00 am at the Ventnor Public Library, located at 6500 Atlantic Avenue, and then proceed to the gazebo at the boardwalk entrance for instructions and materials.  Volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather, bring work gloves, and wear closed, hard-soled shoes as the event is rain or shine. All other supplies will be provided by Clean Ocean Action. Registration is not required, but is preferred for large groups.

The trash collected during the beach cleanups is analyzed and the results are used to evaluate the sources of pollution as well as educate citizens, businesses and corporations about the waste found on New Jersey’s shores. If you have any questions, would like directions, or would like to volunteer and register a group of Beach Sweep volunteers, please contact beachsweep@adventureaquarium.com. For more information or to find out how you can help with future conservation efforts, visit www.AdventureAquarium.com/conservation.

The main components of SPORT include a brief, one-on-one talk with a Prevention Specialist where youth develop their own “Fitness Prescription,” and a series of three postcards mailed each week to parents that contain fitness and health messages to help their son/daughter stay active and healthy. The program has been proven to result in achieving personal health goals, increased moderate and vigorous physical activity, reduction in alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana consumption, improved healthy eating, enhanced overall physical and mental health, and decreased risks associated with experiencing social and personal problems, injury, illness, and death, according to Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems.
SPORT is free to middle and high school youth in Delaware and Chester Counties. Those interested in having a Holcomb Prevention Specialist implement SPORT with their children may call Kate Kinsley at 484-444-0412.

FREE Kids Grow Expo

Children Will Discover “Magical, Mystical Trees”
At 2011 Kids Grow Expo

AMBLER, PA. (April 2011) -- More than 6,000 area students and teachers will celebrate Arbor Day on April 29 at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Kids Grow Expo held on Temple’s Ambler Campus.  The Expo, now in its 36th year, is PHS’s annual horticultural exhibition that brings environmental awareness to students of all ages. The free event encourages active participation in growing, gardening and related activities, and includes a Junior Flower Show competition among thousands of area students.
The 2011 Kids Grow Expo theme is “Magical, Mystical Trees.”    The pleasures and benefits of trees are especially tangible for children. They view trees as a shady retreat on a hot summer day, a sturdy foundation for a swing or clubhouse, or the perfect spot to crouch behind in a game of hide-and-seek.
“PHS will launch its Plant One Million tree campaign this year and that gave us the inspiration for this year’s event theme,’” said Flossie Narducci, Senior Education Activities Manager at PHS.
The Expo will bring students out of their classrooms to enjoy more than 80 exhibitors and to learn how trees can make a world of difference in their lives.
“The Kids Grow Expo is fun and educational, and with its outdoors focus is the perfect way to connect children with the environment,” said Drew Becher, PHS President.
Taking a page from the Philadelphia International Flower Show, the Junior Flower Show accepts entries in both artistic design and horticulture categories.  Teachers work with students throughout the year to plan and create hundreds of displays for the competition. Entries are judged by age division and the students are awarded ribbons.
The Expo will be held in conjunction with Temple’s Earthfest event, rain or shine, on April 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Temple University Ambler Campus, 580 Meetinghouse Road, Ambler, Pa.
For additional information about the Kids Grow Expo, please go to http://www.phsonline.org/, or contact Flossie Narducci at 215-988-8897 or fnarducci@pennhort.org.
For details on all related activities and programs scheduled during EarthFest, please visit www.ambler.temple.edu/earthfest.
