Peace Center Continues Film Series
  The Peace Center of Delaware County’s First-Friday Large Screen Free Film Series continues Friday (Feb. 3) with the documentary, “Constantine’s Sword.”
  Directed by Oscar-nominated Oren Jacoby, with voice-overs by Philip Bosco, Natasha Richardson, Eli Wallach, Liev Schreiber and James Carroll, the 96-minute film was inspired by the best-selling book by author and former priest, James Carroll.
  The film brings to life a history of religious intolerance, tracing it as a source of war and the fanaticism that threatens the world today. From Roman Emperor Constantine's vision of the cross as a sword and symbol of power, to the rise of genocidal anti-Semitism and modern-day wars, Carroll's journey begins in his own past, as he comes to terms with his father's role as an U.S. Air Force general preparing for nuclear war. From there, he is carried into the wider world, uncovering historical evidence of church-sanctioned violence. Carroll also delves into the way some evangelical Christians proselytize inside the armed forces.
  Doors open at 6:30p.m. for light refreshments; the film will be shown at 7. For more information, visit http://www.delcopeacecenter.org/  or call 610-544-1818.  The screening is co-sponsored by Brandywine Peace Community and will be show at 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield.

A correlation will be made between the current fashioning, framing and directing of contemporary personalities and the potential negative impact a co-opted "legacy" can have on black populations if not properly understood.

Groundhog Day pre-party
Punxsutawney Phil may be the most well known groundhog in Pennsylvania but we have a whole family of the furry and friendly critters right here at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge,

It will be a few days earlier than that “other” Groundhog Day on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., so the entire family can join in the fun.
Along with the Tim, Tina, and the Twins, the celebration will include family oriented fun and hands-on activities highlighting the history of Groundhog Day as well as refuge critters, groundhog walks, indoor craft activities for children, weather presentations from the NOAA’s National Weather Service, shadow activities by the Franklin Institute, and live animals from the Philadelphia Zoo! All of this plus live music from local troubadour, Glen Waldek, will culminate in a burrow-side celebration.  Will Tim see his shadow?  Will he predict an early spring or six more weeks of winter?  Be on hand to find out and have a great time.
Schedule of events: 9-9:45 Guided Groundhog nature walk; 10-10:25      Welcome/Groundhog Day History; 10:25-11 weather show by NOAA's National Weather Service; 11-11:45 animal adaptations by the Philadelphia Zoo; 11:45-12         Groundhog shadows by the Franklin Institute; 12:20-12:30 parade to the Groundhog Burrow; 12:30-1 Groundhog Day ceremony! FREE Groundhog Festival At Heinz Refuge

‘Groundhog Day Family Festival’ At Heinz Refuge
   John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge  will hold a “Groundhog Day Family Festival” 9 am to 1 pm  Sat. (Jan. 28).
  Punxsutawney Phil may be the most well known groundhog in Pennsylvania but Heinz Reguge has a whole family of the furry and friendly critters. “Tinicum Tim and Tina” and their “Tinicum Twins,” representing the many actual groundhogs now hibernating at the refuge under the protection of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, are gearing up for their own take on Groundhog Day. It will be a few days earlier than that “other” Groundhog Day so the entire family can join in the fun.
   Along with the Tim, Tina, and the Twins, the celebration will include family-oriented fun and hands-on activities highlighting the history of Groundhog Day as well as refuge critters, groundhog walks, indoor craft activities for children, weather presentations from the NOAA’s National Weather Service, shadow activities by the Franklin Institute, and live animals from the Philadelphia Zoo. All of this plus live music from local troubadour, Glen Waldek, will culminate in a burrow-side celebration. Will Tim see his shadow? Will he predict an early spring or six more weeks of winter? Be on hand to find out and have a great time.
      Schedule of events is:
  9-9:45  am, Guided Groundhog Nature Walk
 10-10:25, Welcome/Groundhog Day History;
  10:25-11, Weather Show by NOAA's National Weather Service;
  11-11:45, Animal Adaptions by the Philadelphia Zoo;
   11:45 - 12:20, Groundhog Shadows by The Franklin Institute;
  12:20 - 12:30, Parade to the Groundhog Burrow;
  12:30 - 1, Groundhog Day Ceremony! Will Tinicum Tim see his shadow?
  Plus ongoing crafts and activities will be going on throughout the day in the John Heinz NWR Visitor Center.
   The “Early Groundhog Day” at the refuge is free and sponsored by the Friends of the Heinz Refuge in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

  PAWS for Reading will be at the Media-Upper Providence Free Library with one of its therapy dog teams on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 6:30 to 7:30p.m.
PAWS for Reading allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog in order to improve reading and communication skills. Children read individually to trained therapy pets (and their handlers) in settings where they can feel comfortable and confident, and have fun.

Ted Nash Jazz Masterclass
Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 4:00 p.m.

Swarthmore College - Lang Concert Hall

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Ted Nash was born in Los Angeles into a musical family – his father Dick Nash and uncle Ted Nash are both well-known jazz and studio musicians. Nash first came to New York at the age of eighteen and soon after released his first album as a leader, Conception (Concord Jazz). During his first three years in New York he became a regular member of the Gerry Mulligan Big Band, the National Jazz Ensemble, and the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, the latter an association that would last for more than ten years.

It was in this fertile environment that Nash began to write his first arrangements. In 1994, Nash was commissioned by the Davos Musik Festival (Switzerland) to compose for a string quartet in a jazz setting. This commission was the inspiration for Nash’s CD Rhyme and Reason, which was voted one of the top five CDs of 1999 by Jazz Times magazine.

One of Nash's most important associations is with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. A recent commission by the JLCO, Portrait in Seven Shades, was recorded by the Orchestra and released in February 2010, followed by a month-long tour. This recording, a first-ever JLCO release devoted to original music by a band member other than Wynton Marsalis, has been credited by Ted Panken in Downbeat magazine as marking a new direction for the Orchestra.

Nash’s CDs have received many awards, including top ten CDs by New York Times, Village Voice, Boston Globe, New York Newsday, The New Yorker, Downbeat, and Jazz Times magazine. Nash has been cited as “rising star” on saxophone for several years in the Downbeat magazine Critics Poll. Nash has also won three SESAC National Performance Activity Awards for the success of the CDs on the radio.
