County Council Offers FREE Wi-Fi
Public can connect to Internet at Government Center and Courthouse

Delaware County Council now provides free wireless Internet access to the public, allowing Wi-Fi “hot spots” in public areas of both the Government Center and Courthouse buildings in Media.
Wi-Fi is a mechanism that allows electronic devices to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network. Over the last year, access points or “hot spots” have been created throughout the Courthouse and Government Center complex.
“We want our visitors, particularly people doing business here at the Government Center, to be able connect to people and places while visiting our facilities,” said Councilman John McBlain. “There’s a need for people to stay connected these days and Council wants to offer that enhanced service to our visitors. This added tool also enhances government transparency through easier access, and enhances public safety by adding a backup means of communicating.”
The free Wi-Fi access is configured outside the county’s professional network. Delaware County’s Information Technology Department (IT), under the leadership of Director Jerry O’Connor, has taken secure measures to ensure Wi-Fi users cannot access county or court-related information unless given specific authorization.

Media Plans To Welcome Home Veterans With Parade
(FREE to area residents!) Mark Your Calendars NOW!

by Susan L. Serbin
Correspondent

The borough will add to its tradition of honoring veterans with a Welcome Home Parade and Event scheduled for April 28. Media Mayor Bob McMahon said that while much of the planning and details are yet to be worked out, the date is set as is the sincere commitment.
“This is to be a Philadelphia-area regional event in recognition of all troops who have served since 9/11. If you ask, ‘Why Media?’ it is something we have done for at least 20 years with a big welcome home parade in 1991.And for the past 12 years, we have made a welcome part of our annual parades in the borough,” said McMahon.
The components of the event will be the acknowledgment of those who have served and a flag passing from older veterans to those just returning. The flag passing was called “a moving symbol of the culture and patriotism of my childhood state of Pennsylvania,” by Vice President Joe Biden at the 2011 Veterans Day parade.
McMahon said that there is a real importance of the third element, which is outreach to newly retired veterans and their families. In that respect, McMahon is working closely with Ralph Galati, veterans’ liaison at the Delaware County Department of Veterans Affairs.
Galati, a Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, will be instrumental in the cause of steering veterans and families to services.
The welcome home event builds on the tradition of veteran’s events, which have included such dignitaries as Tuskegee Airmen, World War II Band of Brothers members and Medal of Honor recipients. Details will be forthcoming.
(To see video clips of prior flag passing ceremonies go to the Veterans National Education Project at www.v-nep.org. For more information on participation in the parade, contact the Veterans Legacy Project at 484-444-0200.)

FREE Art Exhibit and Reception

Travels", an exhibition of acrylic and encaustic paintings by Media artist Nancy Markezin will be on display March 1-30 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore.
The public is invited to the artist's reception, 5-7 p.m., Friday March 2, scheduled as part of Swarthmore’s First Friday.
Markezin, who studied applied arts and graphic design at Penn State, describes herself as a non-objective abstract painter who paints "what my mind sees." She notes that, partly as a result of her training in applied arts and graphic design, her work reflects a desire for color, design and repetition of patterns. Her objective is to convey to the viewer" a certain level of organization, accomplished with both line, color and space."  Her work has been exhibited locally at the Community Arts Center (CAC(, Widener University, and various galleries throughout the Philadelphia area, including 12 years with the 3rd Street Gallery in Philadelphia.
A former Swarthmore resident who lived here in the early years of raising a family, and then spent a number of years out of the area, she says "I am thrilled to be showing in this Swarthmore venue."
When she and her family returned to the Media area, she decided then to pursue a career as an artist.  Today she is very active at the CAC where she is involved in painting, pottery, and the planning of exhibits.  She also spends many happy hours painting in her studio along Crum Creek.
The exhibit is sponsored by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts. For information about Swarthmore Friends of the Arts, visitwww.swarthmorearts.org or call Exhibit Chair Michele Southworth at 610-543-1108.

FREE Expo For Teens Ready For Prom Season!

‘Promalicious’ Expo Lets Students Get Sneak Peek At Expo

Promalicious, the area’s first and largest Prom Expo for PA, NJ, and DE is holding its inaugural event with an aim to enhance the prom experience for thousands of high schoolers, while also working to allow a few others to simply have one. Taking place at the Ramada Philadelphia Airport in Essington 12 noon to 4pm Sun. (March 25), Promalicious, a free Expo for students, will combine the hottest trends in music, fashion and entertainment for the upcoming prom season with multiple charitable causes and fundraising foundations.
For students all over the country, prom is a rite of passage. However, for the children of St. Christopher's Hospital, attending a school dance might not be an option this year. Promalicious hopes to change that by granting the patients their wish for a night they can remember by allowing them to experience the same memorable event that their classmates will be enjoying. Proceeds from the Expo will be used to hold a sponsored prom for the children of St. Christopher’s Hospital, allowing them the chance to attend a dance they can call all their own.
While those in attendance search for their own perfect dress or tux during the two scheduled runway shows featuring a live DJ and food and drink (cash bar for adults 21+), Fairy Godmother’s, Inc is challenging high schools to donate used dresses, tuxes and suits that can be re-worn by less fortunate students at their own proms. The school that donates the most clothing, making the proms of others more memorable, will do the same for itself as a celebrity will make an appearance at the winning school’s prom.
High Schools should register their school for this challenge by emailing challenge@jessicascottllc.com
Promalicious Founder, David Smith will represent and spread the ideals of The Melanoma International Foundation, asking attendees to sign a pledge to stay out of the tanning beds and the sun in favor of Airbrush (spray) tans, a process proven to be much safer for users.
Additional sponsors include David’s Bridal, Philadelphia Wax Museum, Unique Limousine Concepts, Venus Beauty Academy, and Blast DJ’s.
For more information about Promalicious or to become a sponsor or vendor at the Expo, visit http://www.promalicious.com/ or contact Jessica Scott at 215.693.6177 or Jessica@JessicaScottLLC.com

Residents can get ‘fiscally fit’ with FREE info
Library Foundation of Delaware County receives grant to offer ‘MoneySmart’ education

Delaware County libraries will soon play an important role in helping residents better understand and plan their finances through a new program called MoneySmart@your library.
Delaware County Council and the Delaware County Library System (DCLS) announced that the County’s member libraries will offer a series of presentations and materials that will provide FREE, reliable and unbiased financial information to help people of all ages and economic levels to get “fiscally fit.”
The Library Foundation of Delaware County, in cooperation with DCLS, was awarded a $97,470 grant to provide a two-year financial education program on three separate levels. The first level of education will focus on basic financial literacy skills, the second will offer information to assist parents in teaching financial literacy to their children, and the third will focus on investor education.
The Library Foundation of Delaware County is one of 16 public libraries nationwide selected for the grant by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation.
DCLS will work with a variety of organizations, including CLARIFI (formerly Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Delaware Valley) and the Pennsylvania Securities Commission, to present programs in local libraries over a two-year period, starting this spring.  In addition, the grant will fund the purchase of books and eBooks to help county residents manage their money more effectively.
“The MoneySmart program will be a great resource for our residents, especially during tough economic times when people need to manage their money very carefully,” said County Councilman John McBlain, Council’s liaison to DCLS. “This is one more example of how important our libraries are to the community, as a place where people can easily access many resources, including computer access.”
David Belanger, DCLS director, said he is pleased that Delaware County was selected among libraries across the country for participation in this important financial education program.
“We look forward to using this grant to create innovative programs that will help residents in Delaware County prosper,” Belanger said. “We hope to launch the events in April of this year, so people should stay tuned for more news on this program. A full schedule of all events will be posted on the DCLS website.”
The national program, titled Smart Investing @ your library, is a grant-funded program developed collaboratively by the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The program addresses the growing need for unbiased financial and investor education at the grassroots level. Since its launch in 2007, participating libraries and their community partners have helped people nationwide find the information they need to improve their financial decisions.
Through the program, library visitors are empowered to make smart financial decisions, both for long-term investing and day-to-day money matters.
In Delaware County, the program will focus on helping people who might not have easy access to financial and investment consulting.
“In an era of economic uncertainty, it is Council’s hope that the MoneySmart@your library program will give residents the tools they need to take charge and gain confidence in becoming engineers of their financial futures,” said Councilman McBlain.
The Delaware County Library System is the department of county government responsible for providing support services and leadership activities for 26 member libraries.  More information on DCLS can be found at http://www.delcolibraries.org/.

“As we enter tax return season, this event is a good opportunity to get ahead of the April 17 filing deadline and receive free extra assistance filling out tax returns or property tax and rent rebates,” Williams said. “I’m grateful to PathWaysPA for offering this helpful free service and to Brown’s ShopRite for providing the location of this event.”

Williams’ staff will also be available to provide on-site constituent services, including any state government matters like PACE and PACENET, public utilities, driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations and more.

Individuals should bring their identification and Social Security card; copies of 2011 rent receipts or receipts for paid property and school taxes or year-end mortgage statement if their taxes are paid through their mortgage company; statements of income, including W-2s, Social Security, pensions, etc.; and a checking or savings account number and bank routing number for those who want direct deposit for their rebate.

Space is limited, so sign up in advance by calling ShopRite at 215-492-1333 or Williams’ district office at 215-492-2980.
