Third Annual Flag Rising and Community Celebration Weekend at the 1799 Lazaretto

The Friends of the 1799 Lazaretto, and the Tinicum Township Historical Society will raise the International Quarantine Flag over the property 11 am Sat. (June 2) to re-create an annual ritual that took place every June 1, when the Philadelphia Department of Public Health would go to the Lazaretto to raise the quarantine flag and hold a banquet complete with brandy and cigars. This year's main theme will be "1799-1801 the First Years."  Special displays will be presented by Tinicum Township Historical Society, and the Friends of the 1799 Lazaretto.
The Lazaretto at 99 Wanamaker Avenue (at 2nd Street), Essington,  will be openSaturday 10-4 and Sunday 10-3
The Lazaretto was built in 1799 along the banks of the Delaware River in Essington. It was the official quarantine station for the city of Philadelphia. For most of the next century, all passenger and cargo vessels bound for the port of Philadelphia were required to dock at the Lazaretto for inspection. Passengers suspected of contagion were quarantined in the hospital, and all suspect cargo was stored in the public warehouse. The Board of Health of the City of Philadelphia operated the facility until 1893.
After it was closed as a hospital, it was used as a summer resort for the Philadelphia Athletics "The Orchard,” a temperance revival center, a civilian seaplane aviation base, in WW 1 by US Army Signal Corp Aviation as Chandler Field, and to the present day as a civilian seaplane aviation base.
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the Lazaretto is the oldest intact quarantine facility in the Western Hemisphere and the fourth oldest in the world.
Although presently vacant, the building is in excellent condition with much of its original fabric intact. The Friends of the 1799 Lazaretto, are now working to ensure the preservation, interpretation and adaptive re-use of this little known but important historical site.
On the way to or from the 1799 Lazaretto Sat. (June 2)  stop at St. John's Episcopal Church's "64th Annual Strawberry Festival" 3rd and Wanamaker Avenue, Essington, (Route 420) from 11 am to 5 pm. Try their ice cream, cake and strawberries, food, games, Moon Bounce, crafts, used books, kid's crafts and chances.
Events at the Lazaretto will be as follows. On Saturday, June 2, beginning at 10 am,  a video, "Fever: 1799," will run throughout the day as well as a PowerPoint slide presentation of "An examination of the architecture of the 1799 Lazaretto" by University of Pennsylvania students.      On Sunday, June 3,  10-3, displays by Tinicum Township Historical Society and the Friends of the 1799 Lazaretto  will be held throughout the day. Before the event at 8 am,  St. John's Episcopal will hold an Open Invitation to Worship to which all are welcome. The women and men of Tinicum Township Fire Compan Station 48 "The Island" will be out all day selling firehouse memorabilia and birch beer with a portion of the proceeds going the restoration and preservation of the "1803 Lazaretto Pumper"

Author Priscilla Clement At Swarthmore Library

Swarthmore Library will host “A Visit with Priscilla Clement,” author of
Blood on the Path: An Eagles Mere Mystery, 7p.m., Thursday (May 24).
A pretty teenaged girl is assaulted and disappears on a dark, wooded path in the Pennsylvania Victorian resort town of Eagles Mere in 1959. Her body is never found. Family and friends eventually learn to live with the lack of resolution until the victim's niece, born after her aunt's disappearance, determines to solve the mystery. As she pursues clues in and about Eagles Mere and neighboring communities, she and her children are threatened. Clearly, someone who is alive and well is willing to do anything to prevent further investigation of the crime.
This is the premise of Priscilla F. Clement’s novel, Blood on the Path, published by the Eagles Mere Museum.  Clement and her family have been visiting Eagles Mere every summer since the 1970s. Clement is a trained historian, who has written several books on the history of children and of poverty.  She taught for many years at the Penn State Brandywine Campus.
“Writing history involves solving mysteries,” she says, “and I always thought I would like to create one of my own. So when I retired from teaching, I started work on Blood on the Path.”
Programs are free and open to the public; register at the library, 121 Park Ave., call 610-543-0436 or email swarthmore@delcolibraries.org.

He’ll base his investigation of Cleopatra on the actual archaeological evidence, not what the movies dramatize. Dr. Phillips is back by popular demand! His engaging and enthusiastic style of presentation, together with his immense knowledge of each subject he presents, has earned him a loyal following at Ridley Library. Dr. Phillips is the Research Assistant in the Egyptian Section of the University of PA Museum. He specializes in the analysis of ancient Egyptian mummies. His appearance at the library is through the Outreach Lecture Program, which is funded by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Register for this free event by phone at 610-583-0593, by email at reference@ridleylibrary.org, or in person at the library, located at 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom. Walk-ins are also welcome!

“Celebrate & Remember Our History” In FREE Session

The Newtown Square Historical Society presents an opportunity to take
part in sharing town’s memories with others that lived those very same memories or are interested in learning more about our past.
Hosted by the societies Past-President, Doug Humes, ESQ, along with Christopher Driscoll the current Museum Curator, Webmaster and Technology master, you will travel down Newtown Square’s memory lane.  The society will share pictures of long forgotten places and you will be able to add input or just sit back and enjoy the show.  The really fun part will happen with your participation. Please bring any old pictures that you may have of our home town that you are willing to share.  With your permission, the society will be prepared to copy your pictures for inclusion in our historic archives at the Paper Mill House.
This is your opportunity to enter our “time capsule” with your pictures and stories of our past.   We are in the process of updating the website which  includes many pictures and stories about our historic buildings and residents.
This is a great location for residents to look up places that they remember or ones that you may have recently sited along a roadside.  It is sad, but we are losing many such places to progress or through neglect.
We hope that this focus will remind everyone of the importance of maintaining a record of our past for our future generations.  Your pictures and stories will help represent a bridge from the past to our children and their children.
Refreshments will be served, offering the opportunity to network and meet your neighbors.  Don’t forget to visit us on the Society’s website: http/www.historicnewtownsquare.org/
Location:  The Dunwoody Village Auditorium, 3500 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA

The exhibit, called “A Living Legacy,” is open June 1 – June 28, 2012. The group annually display their art at the Philadelphia Flower Show where they demonstrate their exacting style of painting plants and flowers. Their work is also featured in local galleries and other public venues.
Friends’ Hospital was founded by Quakers in 1813 as the country’s first free-standing psychiatric hospital. It is now a 192 bed acute care psychiatric hospital providing not only medical treatment but also moral and emotional support. The original hospital was spearheaded by Thomas Scattergood whose name was given to the Scattergood Foundation formed in 2005. The purpose of the Foundation is both to improve access to care and to maintain the grounds and historical artifacts. It is the Scattergood Foundation that is sponsoring the “Art of the Legacy Garden.”
The FREE exhibit will be open to the public from 9:00am – 5:00pm, June 1, 2012 to June 28, 2012. A Visit with Priscilla Clement
Author of
Blood on the Path: An Eagles Mere Mystery

Thursday, May 24, 2012
7:00 pm
All programs are free and open to the public.

Williams to Co-Host May 15 ‘Financing Your Business’ Workshop

PHILADELPHIA, April 30, 2012 — State Sen. Anthony H. Williams invites local small business owners to attend his next small business workshop, which will focus on “Financing Your Business.”
The free event, co-hosted by Citi and the Enterprise Center, will take place on Tuesday, May 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Enterprise Center, 4548 Market St., in Philadelphia.
The workshop will focus on helping small business owners pursue financing, build healthy relationships and partnerships with banks and minimize tax liabilities. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.
“Small businesses have a major impact on the economic health of the community, the region and the entire commonwealth,” Williams said. “Mom-and-Pop operations dominate our area. Some nine in ten firms in our area are small businesses. These are the operations that give a kid that first job, help a senior supplement income, and for tens of thousands of others, provide families the wages they need to survive.
“It’s crucial that small business owners receive the support they need to thrive, so I encourage them to attend this informative workshop on financial advice.”
This event is the latest in a series of small business workshops that the senator has sponsored in and around the 8th Senatorial District to help cultivate and deepen entrepreneurial efforts.

Support the ‘Parents Who Host, Lose the Most’ campaign!
MEDIA, PA — One-third of teenagers have attended parties in which parents were present and substance use by teens occurred, including alcohol use and use of illegal drugs, according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, 2006. The "Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don't be a party to teenage drinking" public awareness campaign was developed by Drug-Free Action Alliance to educate parents about the health and safety risks of serving alcohol at teen parties, and to increase awareness of and compliance with the Underage Drinking Laws.
Through lawn signs, window clings, posters, stickers, and parent pledge cards displaying the slogan, "Parents Who Host Lose the Most: Don't be a party to teenage drinking", this public awareness campaign focuses on familiarizing adults with PA underage drinking laws and the ramifications of breaking those laws, increasing awareness of health risks of underage drinking, reducing the number of parents who allow youth to use alcohol at parties, and decreasing youth access to alcohol.
Want to know how to get involved? Become a Community Partner or a Community Supporter! Community Partners will distribute 10 lawn signs, 10 posters, 100 pledge cards to be signed, 100 stickers, and 20 window clings in their community. Community Supporters will sign a pledge card and display 1 lawn sign and 1 window cling at their location/property. To receive more information about "Parents Who Host, Lose the Most" or to become a community partner/supporter, please contact Kevin Gallagher at kgallagh@holcombbhs.org or call him at: 484-444-0412.
