FREE LEGAL ADVICE OFFERED BY PHILADELPHIA BAR ASSOCIATION AUGUST 15

The Philadelphia Bar Association will offer free legal advice to residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties on Wednesday, August 15 between 5 and 8 p.m.  Members of the public can access the service by calling the Association’s LegalLine P.M. hotline at (215) 238-6333.
Area residents seeking confidential legal advice will be able to speak for free with a volunteer attorney from the Philadelphia Bar Association.  Attorneys are available to offer information about any aspect of the law including family law, landlord-tenant, workers’ compensation and employment law, among other topics.
LegalLine P.M. is a public service sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association, providing residents with free, quick and accurate legal advice during convenient evening hours.  LegalLine P.M. is offered on the third Wednesday of every month from 5 to 8 p.m.  The program has existed for nearly 20 years, allowing volunteer attorneys to help thousands of callers through direct service or by referring them to an appropriate source.
In addition, during regular work hours, the Philadelphia Bar Association offers another program -- the Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) -- which provides lawyer referrals to area residents.  Staff attorneys take calls from the general public and refer callers to attorneys in private practice for a 30-minute consultation, for which the attorney agrees to charge a drastically reduced fee of $30.
If callers do not need an attorney or cannot afford one, they will be directed to a legal service organization, agency or other resource for assistance.  LRIS is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., by calling (215) 238-6333.
Founded in 1802, the 13,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association is the oldest association of lawyers in the United States

Williams Launches Annual ‘Summer of Peace’ Initiative This Weekend

State Sen. Anthony H. Williams will launch his second annual Neighborhood-to-Neighborhood Summer of Peace initiative with a series of family-friendly events, starting this weekend.
The first activity comes with the senator co-hosting the annual Weekend of Peace festivities, kicking off Saturday, July 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center, 250 South 63rd St., Philadelphia. The event will feature free food, swimming and games for folks of all ages. A balloon release to commemorate those slain will take place at noon. All are welcome to attend.
“This is a great opportunity to enjoy a summer cookout in the company of friends and neighbors while providing an example of peace and tranquility in our streets,” Williams said. “I welcome everyone to bring their families and join us for a fun-filled day.”
Running concurrent with Saturday’s event will be a community discussion on youth violence from 12:30-2 p.m. at the Eastwick Recreation Center, 80th Street and Mars Place, where the senator will join the panel. Area students and Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Curtis Douglas also will participate.
The second cookout will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vare Recreation Center, located at 2600 Morris St. in Philadelphia and the final cookout will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nile Swim Club, located at 513 S. Union Ave. in Yeadon.
Each event features outdoor games where kids can romp, compete and play in a safe environment. Details and updates on each event can be found on the senator’s website, http://www.senatoranthonyhwilliams.com/ or by calling (215) 492-2980.
Community sponsors for these activities include SYSCO, Sunoco, Keystone Mercy, Brown's ShopRite, WAWA and the West Philadelphia Coalition of Neighborhoods and Businesses.
With Philadelphia police reporting the city’s homicide rate and related stray bullets ticking upward as of July, safeguarding children becomes even more paramount, Williams noted.
The Summer of Peace initiative replaced his annual N2N Street Festival, channeling resources to support ongoing community-based efforts rather than a one-day affair. Now in its second year, the Summer of Peace continues to offer a variety of local events that neighbors across the district can enjoy while supporting local organizations that promote safety and peace.
“The inaugural Summer of Peace last year was extremely successful because it provided a viable template for how to support those grassroots organizations that are working hard to help uplift our children and keep them from harm,” Williams said. “I’m confident that, with the support of area businesses and foundations, this year will be even better, and that this initiative will become the new summertime tradition here.”
More information on state Sen. Anthony H. Williams may be found on his website, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Help Children Overcome Visit-To-The-Doctor Fears With Norwood Library’s FREE ‘Teddy Bear Checkup’ Day
A Teddy Bear Checkup, sponsored by Taylor Community Foundation, will be held at the Norwood Public Library, 513 Welcome Ave, Norwood 10:45 am  Thurs. (August 2) for children and their teddy bears aged 3 to 6.  The Teddy Bear Checkup is a program designed to help preschool aged children learn more about a visit to the doctor's office.
Children bring their favorite stuffed animal for a simulated medical examination which demonstrates how doctors and nurses care for patients.  Many children see a medical office as an intimidating place, but once their favorite friend gets a checkup, they discover that seeing the doctor is not so bad, after all.
The program will begin with story time, followed by a "clinic visit".  Children bring their stuffed animals to the "clinic" for a routine health checkup, where the TCF team member demonstrates the procedure for an examination.  Children get hands-on experience with authentic medical equipment as they practice examining their "lovies" by checking blood pressure and listening to their heart and lungs.  "Parents" leave the clinic with their happy bears (or other lovies) in their arms.  Each animal receives a sticker and a certificate of good health as they check out.

This year’s Liberty Medal ceremony will serve as the centerpiece of the nationwide celebration of the U.S. Constitution’s 225th anniversary.  The public event will take place rain or shine on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the National Constitution Center in Historic Philadelphia.  The event will be broadcast live on WPVI-TV/6abc and webcast live on http://www.6abc.com/.

The 2012 Liberty Medal recognizes Muhammad Ali as a champion of freedom and a living embodiment of the Constitution who exemplifies everything the award was established to honor: individuals of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe.

Ali has long served as an icon of constitutional ideals and the realization of the American dream – all the while challenging and expanding the very definition of “We the People.”  The Olympic gold medalist and boxing legend has been an outspoken fighter for religious and civil rights; a conscientious objector who took his battle to the Supreme Court and won; an ambassador for peace and justice worldwide; and a tireless humanitarian and philanthropist.  Even as he celebrated his 70th birthday this year, Ali has continued to break new ground as an advocate for those suffering from Parkinson’s disease, a disease he has battled since 1982.

The Liberty Medal was established in 1988 to commemorate the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution.  Given annually, the medal honors men and women of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe.

National Constitution Center Board member Ira Lubert of Independence Capital Partners will sponsor the Liberty Medal award in 2012, as he has for the past six years.  Citizens Bank is underwriting the VIP Reception for the 2012 Liberty Medal.  Citizens Bank has supported the Liberty Medal at the National Constitution Center since 2006.  Hublot, the luxury Swiss brand that brings the "Art of Fusion" to watchmaking, will celebrate the 225th anniversary of the Constitution with a limited edition "U.S. Liberty Bang" timepiece.

The City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania also support the Liberty Medal.

The National Constitution Center is the first and only nonprofit, nonpartisan institution devoted to the most powerful vision of freedom ever expressed: the U.S. Constitution.  Located on Independence Mall in Historic Philadelphia, the birthplace of American freedom, the Center illuminates constitutional ideals and inspires active citizenship through a state-of-the-art museum experience, including hundreds of interactive exhibits, films and rare artifacts; must-see feature exhibitions; the internationally acclaimed, 360-degree theatrical production Freedom Rising; and the iconic Signers' Hall, where visitors can sign the Constitution alongside 42 life-size, bronze statues of the Founding Fathers.  As America's forum for constitutional dialogue, the Center engages diverse, distinguished leaders of government, public policy, journalism and scholarship in timely public discussions and debates.  The Center also houses the Annenberg Center for Education and Outreach, the national hub for constitutional education, which offers cutting-edge civic learning resources both onsite and online.  Freedom is calling.  Answer it at the National Constitution Center.  For more information, call 215.409.6700 or visit http://www.constitutioncenter.org/

Delaware County High School Athletes "A Culture of Excellence" exhibit at the Mickey Vernon Museum

It is a well-known fact that when it comes to athletics, Delaware County has a culture of excellence.  Indeed, few counties in the United States can match its heritage of nationally known sports stars.  Olympic Gold Medal winners, professional football, baseball and basketball players hall of famers, a Heisman Trophy winner, an Indianapolis 500 winner, a Triple Crown winner, soccer, lacrosse and softball standouts, and coaches in all professional and college sports make up the fabric of our star-studded cast.
How long can Delaware County continue to produce national figures in the world of sports?  Judging by a new exhibit coming to the Mickey Vernon Sports History Museum, it doesn't look as if the county is in danger of relinquishing its hold on top-flight talent any time soon.
Delaware County Daily Times staff photographers Eric Hartline, Robert Gurecki, Julia Wilkinson and Colin Kerrigan have provided the museum with 8 1/2 x 11-inch glossy photo prints of its 22 high school Players of the Year for the 2011-2012 school year.  The photos will be on display at the museum from July 21nd through all of 2012.
You are invited to view this new crop of outstanding high school athletes, then go on to follow their careers as they attempt to walk in the footsteps of their predecessors to become stars on a larger national stage.
The museum is located at the intersection of Routes 291 and 202 at One Beaver Valley Road in Chadds Ford PA.  For museum hours and more information, contact Jim Vankoski at 610-909-4919.

NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER AND DISABILITY PRIDE COMMITTEE MARK 22nd ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

FREE Celebration includes major museum acquisition honoring the legacy of human rights advocate Justin Dart Jr.

Philadelphia, PA (July 13, 2012) – The National Constitution Center and the Disability Pride Committee, including Liberty Resources and Vision for Equality, will honor the 22nd anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with a daylong celebration recognizing all that the disability community has accomplished in the past two decades, as well as the continued fight for civil and human rights.  The festivities will take place at the Center on Saturday, July 28, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Admission is FREE in honor of the celebration.

Immediately following the ceremony, a distinguished panel will discuss Justin Dart Jr.’s lasting legacy and their vision of the future for those living with disabilities.  Panelists include Lex Frieden, a pre-eminent disability activist, leader of the independent living movement, and Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Professor of Rehabilitation at the University of Texas, who will join via robotic telepresence; Cassie James-Holdsworth, Director of National Advocacy & Policy for Liberty Resources; Andy Imparato, Senior Counsel and Disability Policy Director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; Janine Bertram Kemp, widow of the late Evan Kemp, who played a key role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and also was present at the podium during the signing of the ADA bill; Joseph Rogers, Chief Advocacy Officer of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania (MHASP), who served on the Congressionally appointed task force on the Rights and Empowerment of People with Disabilities, which helped pass the ADA; and Erik von Schmetterling, former chair of Liberty ResourcesLawrence Carter-Long, Public Affairs Specialist for the National Council on Disability will share highlights of the day internationally via Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #disabilitypride.

FREE H.E.L.P. Services Available

Ever wish you had a friend or relative to help you with some household or personal problem that you wish to solve?  Well, you might be able to find such a person through a new program that St. James United Church of Christ in Havertown has established:  H.E.L.P.  The acronym stands for Helping/Healing, Educating/Enriching, Learning/Listening, Planning/Problem solving, and the H.E.L.P. program is the brainchild of Rev. Lynn Lampman.
Pastor Lynn has been at St. James Havertown for almost three years now, and among her many missions is for the members of the church to reach out and give to the community.  Since so many at St. James have useful skills and talents, Pastor Lynn thought that H.E.L.P. would be a great way for members to live their faith while addressing the real needs of our neighbors.  The H.E.L.P. program will connect community members with volunteers from St. James, and they will meet at mutually convenient times at the church’s lovely facilities at
135 Myrtle Avenue
in Havertown.  There is never a charge for using H.E.L.P. services.
If you want more information, please call St. James UCC Havertown at 610-446-3036.  Someone will answer your questions about the program and help to match you with a “talent sharer” who has volunteered to help in her/his area of expertise.  Our members have years of experience in their fields, whether it be organizing your personal finances, writing a new resume, finding the right college for yourself or your child, supporting you through a difficult patch, helping you find and develop a new and satisfying hobby, and many more.  In addition, the volunteers are especially enthusiastic.

Delaware County High School Athletes "A Culture of Excellence" exhibit
at the Mickey Vernon Museum

The museum is located at the intersection of Routes 291 and 202 at
One Beaver Valley Road
in Chadds Ford PA.  For museum hours and more information, contact Jim Vankoski at 610-909-4919.

FREE Books For Schools That Qualify!

United Way Launches Born learning Trail: 1700 Books For Children
United Way of Southeast Delaware County gave away 400 books to children recently to promote their Success by Six: Born Learning Trail initiative at Mt. Pleasant Nursery School and Kindergarten in Upper Chichester.
"The timing was perfect for launching this new initiative," says Doreen Storey, Executive Director for United Way of Southeast Delaware County. She continues, "Summer is in full swing and children have plenty of time on their hands to enjoy these books. Each child at Mt. Pleasant received a backpack containing books that they can take home and share with their parents or caregivers."
Storey says Mt. Pleasant is United Way's first award recipient of Success by Six: Born Learning Trail. The initiative, designed as a tool for long-lasting community change, offers outdoor learning games that build pre-literacy skills critical to school readiness and works to ensure all children from birth to age six have positive and enriching  educational experiences. More Born Learning Trail awards are forthcoming with a total of 1,700 books to be given to children. Donations of books were collected during United Way's 2011 Stuff the Bus campaign.
Born Learning is not just another activity targeting children. "The expectation is for parents to read aloud to their children at least one time per week during the summer. To gain this  commitment, we ask parents or caretakers to sign a pledge asserting their role," explains Storey. "The interaction of parents, grandparents or caregivers is essential to promoting learning," she adds.
Research from United Way Worldwide shows that lack of time and knowledge about how best to prepare children for school are often at the center of why low-income children begin kindergarten 1-2 years behind their counterparts. Benefits to a child's weekly reading can help develop their motor skills, language and pre-literacy skills.
For information on hosting a Success by Six: Born Learning Trail event at your school, church or community organization, contact Omar Shaw at 610-874-8646, extension 107.
