FREE LECTURE: "Horrors: Why We Love to be Scared"
Why are people attracted to stories and artwork that instill them with dread, fear, or loathing?  Michael Arnzen, a horror writer and scholar, will answer this question 4:30p.m., Friday (Oct. 26) in lecture, “The Popular Uncanny” at Neumann University. The presentation, scheduled for the Bruder Life Center, is free and open to the public.
Today, a hundred years after Sigmund Freud wrote his landmark essay on “The Uncanny,” the topic has become more than just an attractive and curious art form. It has become a dominant aesthetic in popular culture, from Hollywood horror films and best-selling works of frightening fiction to the banal world of everyday life in advertising and internet discourse.
In "The Popular Uncanny," Arnzen will examine the familiar notions of the doppleganger, deja vu, ghosts, and other stock elements that continue to haunt 21st century popular American culture.
Arnzen, a scholar of the uncanny and prolific horror writer, has won the Bram Stoker Award four times. His books include Proverbs for Monsters, 100 Jolts: Shockingly Short Stories, The Gorelets Omnibus, and Play Dead.
With a PhD in English from the University of Oregon, he teaches horror and suspense writing in the MFA program in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University, near Pittsburgh. He was named Professor of the Year in 2010 and is currently serving as Division Chair of Humanities. His latest non-fiction book is a guide for writers called Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction.
His current work on "The Popular Uncanny" can be found on his website at gorelets.com.

FREE Rain Barrel Making Workshop

The Pennsylvania Resources Council, in partnership with the Darby Creek Valley Association, is presenting a series of four free stormwater management workshops for residents of the Darby Creek Watershed.  The workshop, titled “Backyard Buffers & Rain Barrel Making: Simple Ways to Protect the Darby Creek at Home,” is designed to educate area residents about storm water management practices that they can implement around their homes and on their properties in order to help improve the water quality of the Darby Creek.
During the multimedia presentation, workshop attendees will learn about the problems associated with stormwater runoff, ways to conserve water in their homes, and watershed friendly landscaping techniques. After the presentation, attendees will learn how to construct and install fully functional rain barrels made from recycled food grade barrels. A rain barrel is a system that connects to your downspout to collect and store rain water from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains, streams and rivers.  Residents will be given the rain barrels to take home and use on their properties to help alleviate stormwater runoff.
The first “Backyard Buffers & Rain Barrel Making” workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 10th at the Watkins Avenue Senior Center in Upper Darby Township.  Three additional workshops will be scheduled for spring 2013.  There is a limited amount of rain barrels available at each workshop. A rain barrel will be provided to the first 60 workshop attendees who are Darby Creek Watershed area residents. Impact Of Marcellus Shale Drilling To Be Discussed Locally
The impact of drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale will be the topic at the next meeting of the Eastern Delaware County Branch of AAUW, 7:30p.m., Tuesday (Oct. 23) in room 2/3 of the Kingswood Building of Covenant United Methodist Church of Springfield.
The public is invited to hear a presentation by Dr. Roberta Winters, League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania Vice President for Issues and Action, who has focused her work on the issues surrounding drilling in Marcellus Shale.
Dr. Winters represented the League of Women Voters (LWV) on the Citizens Commission on Marcellus Shale. The group which was composed of several organizations conducted its own study and presented its findings to the Governor and Pennsylvania General Assembly last October, in response to the report of Governor Tom Corbett’s Marcellus Shale Advisory Committee. Its report indicates that current regulations are not adequate to address the environmental threats resulting from this emerging industry. It affects a much larger area than just the 40 Pennsylvania counties where Marcellus Shale is located, according to the report.
The new industry offers potential for economic growth and an expanded source of natural energy but also poses threats to clean water and air including millions of gallons of polluted water resulting from "fracking," the means of extracting the gas. The activity is occurring in an area which lacks an infrastructure to accommodate the operations, according to the report.
Dr. Winters is quoted in a press release from the Citizens Commission dated Oct. 24, 2011, “Citizens believe their elected officials have let them down and are crying out for help….  They want to know that their concerns are being heard and that the agencies entrusted to protect their constitutional right to clean air and water are defending their interests as watchdogs of the industry.”
She will explain new regulations which are needed as well as what has already been done to safeguard the public against hazards. She has been involved in the League’s creation of a series of guides related to Marcellus Shale which are available to the public. She is a former teacher in the Radnor School District and presently is focused on presentations throughout the region on Marcellus Shale.
Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting.

Bram Stoker Expert To Speak At Neumann; Event Is FREE To Public

Neumann University will host Carol Senf, English professor at Georgia Tech, as the keynote speaker for the Sigma Tau Delta English honor society induction. Senf will present her lecture, “Bram Stoker, Dracula, and Spunky American Women,” 7:30p.m., Thursday (Oct. 11) in the Fred P. Meagher Theatre in the Thomas A. Bruder Jr. Life Center off Concord Road in Aston.
Senf delves far deeper into the legacy of Stoker than critics who are content to view Dracula as a cautionary tale of sexual attraction. She characterizes Stoker as an early literary feminist and techie, enchanted by strong, independent women and fascinated by turn-of-the-century technology (the typewriter, phonograph, and telephone). This year marks the 100th anniversary of Bram Stoker’s death.
Senf received her Ph.D. in Victorian studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo and joined the faculty of Georgia Tech in 1981. She is currently professor and associate chair in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, and has published articles on Victorian literature in many magazines.
