Free Backyard Buffers and Rain Barrel Making Workshop for Darby Creek Area Residents

The Pennsylvania Resources Council, in partnership with the Darby Creek Valley Association, is presenting a series of four free stormwater management workshops. The workshop, titled “Backyard Buffers & Rain Barrel Making: Simple Ways to Protect the Darby Creek at Home,” is designed to educate area residents about storm water management practices that they can implement.
During the multimedia presentation, workshop attendees will learn about the problems associated with stormwater runoff, ways to conserve water in their homes, and watershed friendly landscaping techniques. After the presentation, attendees will learn how to construct and install fully functional rain barrels made from recycled food grade barrels. A rain barrel is a system that connects to your downspout to collect and store rain water from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains, streams and rivers.  Residents will be given the rain barrels to take home and use on their properties to help alleviate stormwater runoff.
The first “Backyard Buffers & Rain Barrel Making” workshop of the spring will be held on Wednesday(March 27) at the Collingdale Municipal Building.  The next workshop will be held on April 30 at Upper Darby Township’s Senior Café and the final workshop will be on May 29 at the Twentieth Century Club in Lansdowne. Easter Bunny Season Worries Rabbit Rescuers;
Free Education Program Planned

The Animal Coalition of Delaware County (ACDC), a non-profit animal rescue and adoption organization, will address the impending purchase of countless numbers of Easter bunnies - and the subsequent neglect and abandonment of many of them - by presenting Bunny Basics: How to Care for Your Pet Rabbit 1-2:30 pm  Sat. (March 23) at the Rocky Run YMCA, 1299 West Baltimore Pike, Media. The presentation is free and open to the public and is aimed at adults and children seven years and older.
"Rabbit rescuers and educators dread this time of year, because we know that many people acquire Easter bunnies without learning about their needs beforehand," said Lori Vear, Rabbit Director of ACDC. "After the holiday, many of these new pets face neglect or abandonment once their novelty has worn off and owners realize they require more work than anticipated. Overcrowded shelters and rescue groups then face an onslaught of homeless rabbits."
Many people mistakenly think that rabbits are low-maintenance pets, not realizing that they require daily play time with their families, a specific diet that includes hay and rabbit-safe vegetables, and living space that provides plenty of room to run, jump, and play. Rabbit experts cringe at the thought of these active, social animals being kept in a cage and fed nothing but commercial rabbit pellets.
"Rabbits are definitely not low-maintenance pets," said Leah Gordon, creator of the Bunny Basics program and former Rabbit Director of ACDC. "They are gentle, playful, affectionate animals, however, and can be a wonderful addition to a well-prepared home."
ACDC volunteers will distribute educational materials, demonstrate proper rabbit handling, and discuss topics such as healthy diet, humane housing, litter training, and rabbit proofing a home.  Vear reminds people that rabbits require the safety and comfort of an indoor home.
"Due to their physical fragility and their need for a calm environment, they are not suitable for homes with young children. Even older children should be supervised by an adult at all times," she stated.
Rabbits are the third most common animal relinquished to SPCAs, and there are hundreds of homeless rabbits currently in shelters and rescue groups throughout the Delaware Valley.

Newtown Square Historical Society to Present FREE Program

“SANDY FLASH”

The Newtown Square Historical Society is proud to have noted local Speaker and Historian Eric Chandlee Wilson as their March 20th speaker.  Wilson is co-author of “West Chester, the First 200 Years: 1799-1999 Bicentennial Souvenir”  His subject will be the Robin Hood type character that was born and operated in Chester County, PA, and died in 1778.  Remember, at this period of time, Delaware County was part of Chester County.  James Fitzpatrick, better known as “Sandy Flash” became legend with many acts of  reckless bravado, some performed in our Squire Tavern, where  he taunted our local officials and law officers who attempted to arrest him.  Instead Sandy Flash ambushed and robbed them.  Sandy Flash has become a figure of folklore in the areas of Chester County and Delaware County. Several streets in the area are named for him, including a road within Ridley Creek State Park.
Admission is FREE and all are welcome, so please come and bring a friend.  Refreshments will be served. Join us at the Dunwoody Village Auditorium at 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March  20th.  More details can be found on the Society’s Facebook and website:  http/www.historicnewtownsquare.org/

H.E.L.P. Services Offered For FREE To Community

Ever wish you had a friend or relative to help you with some household or personal problem that you wish to solve?  Well, you might be able to find such a person through a new program that St. James United Church of Christ in Havertown has established:  H.E.L.P.  The acronym stands for Helping/Healing, Educating/Enriching, Learning/Listening, Planning/Problem solving, and the H.E.L.P. program is the brainchild of Rev. Lynn Lampman.
Pastor Lynn has been at St. James Havertown for almost three years now, and among her many missions is for the members of the church to reach out and give to the community.  Since so many at St. James have useful skills and talents, Pastor Lynn thought that H.E.L.P. would be a great way for members to live their faith while addressing the real needs of our neighbors.  The H.E.L.P. program will connect community members with volunteers from St. James, and they will meet at mutually convenient times at the church’s lovely facilities at 135 Myrtle Avenue in Havertown.  There is never a charge for using H.E.L.P. services.
If you want more information, please call St. James UCC Havertown at 610-446-3036.  Someone will answer your questions about the program and help to match you with a “talent sharer” who has volunteered to help in her/his area of expertise.  Our members have years of experience in their fields, whether it be organizing your personal finances, writing a new resume, finding the right college for yourself or your child, supporting you through a difficult patch, helping you find and develop a new and satisfying hobby, and many more.  In addition, our volunteers are especially enthusiastic.
So, please give St. James UCC a call and find out more.  We are confident that we can H.E.L.P.

Tree Commission Hosts Free Lecture

Trees are a huge asset to residential landcapes and the communities where they are located. Yet, correctly planting and caring for the trees is a bit daunting for many homeowners. To take the mystery and worry out of tree care, the Marple Tree Commission and the Marple Public Library are offering area homeowners an opportunity to learn the basics by attending two free lectures 7:30 p.m., March 12 and March 19, at the Marple Township Building, 227 South Sproul Road in Marple (below the Marple Public Library).
The first lecture, “Avoiding Landscape Blunders,” by Howard Eyre, assistant professor of Ornamental Horticulture at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, will address critical issues such as “Planting Roots or Burying Trees?”, “To Mulch or Too Much Mulch?” and others in his humorous, highly informative presentation.
The second lecture, “Your Yard and Your Trees…Perfect Together!” by B.J. Hensil, horticulture instructor at Upper Darby High School and owner of a garden design and installation business, will explore the many issues to consider when choosing the right tree for your particular property. Among them will be “Suit the Site,” and “Wanted: Trees that Multitask.”
Members of the public will find this information very helpful for caring for their trees and  monitoring the work of landscape services they hire to assure that they are using correct procedures. Bring your questions and concerns and enjoy! For more information; treecommission@marpletwp.com.
