Philadelphia Union Soccer Player Is Guest Reader
During Story Time at Ridley Township Library

The Delaware County Library System (DCLS) will host Philadelphia Union soccer player Chris Albright in a guest reading at the Ridley Township Public Library 3 pm Tuesday, (July 23).
   Albright, a defender for the Major League Soccer team that plays at PPL Park, will read one his favorite books, “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.” Joining Albright will be County Council member John McBlain who will provide opening remarks and read a soccer themed book.  Lauren Longbottom, Ridley Taaownship Library children’s librarian, will also provide stories.
   After the story time, Albright will answer questions and sign copies of his READ poster, one of several celebrity “Read” posters created by DCLS to promote literacy and library use. Copies of the poster will be given to the first 50 participants.

Parkside Academy of Music and Dance marks National Dance Day with free classes, raffles and more

            In celebration of National Dance Day, Parkside Academy of Music and Dance, 33 W. Roland Rd., Parkside, will present free classes 9 am to 5 pm Saturday (July 27). Classes being offered throughout the day include:  Hip Hop, Zumba, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Kinderdance, and Praise Dance.  An exact schedule and times is listed on Parkside Academy's website and face book page.  All ages and abilities are welcomed.  No special clothing or shoes are required for these classes.  Registration is preferred but not required.
     A special drawing will be held at the conclusion of the day.  Any dancer who attends any of the National Dance Day classes (except the Official Routine Class) at Parkside Academy will have their name entered into a raffle. The winner will get to take the style of dance (of the class they took) for free for the upcoming 2013-2014 season. Also, Parkside Academy's regular registration fee of $25 will be waived for all new families on this day only. 
            In addition to the National Dance Day classes offered, Parkside Academy also offers Irish Dance, Musical Theater, Dance with Mommy, Adult Ballet, Adult Tap, and a Boys Only class.  Boys who take the Boys Only class may also enroll in a Hip Hop or Musical Theater class for free.  A full schedule of all classes can be found at ParksideAcademy.com. 
   National Dance Day was launched in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, Executive Producer of So You Think You Can Dance fame and Co-President of Dizzy Feet Foundation.  It has grown into an annual celebration. According to the Dizzy Feet Foundation website, “This grassroots campaign encourages Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and combat obesity.”  This year there are two official dance routines.  A Hip Hop routine, a challenging routine for those with dance experience,  that was choreographed by Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo and an Everybody Dance routine, geared for all levels and abilities, that was choreographed by Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman.  Both routines will be taught at the conclusion of the festivities beginning at 4 pm at Parkside Academy.

Free speaker available for local groups, clubs

  Tom Garrity of Havertown will present a free program of memories to local groups and clubs. His presentation is especially popular at local senior centers and nursing and rehab centers since it brings back golden memories of sports and television shows.
  Garrity is a whiz at recalling information on pro athletes over the past 50 years as well as interesting facts about baseball, football, basketball, and college All-American athletes.
  The interactive presentation will also bring the audience back to the golden years in television with his extensive memories and knowledge about comedies, musicals, westerns and dramas.

Short and Sweet’ recycling event in Media
                   
   Transition Town Media will host a ‘short & sweet’ family-friendly event to inform and educate people about recycling 12-2 pm Sun. (Aug. 4) at the Media Community Center, 301 N. Jackson St., Media. The event will begin with a short talk on recycling, followed by a Q and A session, a recycling game and ice cream sundaes. Attendees are asked to bring their favorite topping to share. All ages are welcome.
   The talk is being given by Resa Thomason, a master-certified expert on recycling from Portland OR. People are encouraged to bring any non-hazardous items to the event that they don’t know how to recycle. Resa will also provide details on hazardous waste recycling and the local events for this. Visit the PA Veterans Museum in Media---It's FREE!

  After enjoying al fresco dining in charming Media Borough at Dining Under the Stars- or at any other time- visitors are invited to  stroll over to the historic 111th National Guard Amory and visit the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum.
  The Museum preserves, protects and promotes the legacy and dignity of all veterans of the U.S.  military. Short films are shown in the Ruptured Duck Theatre to transport visitors to the front lines and may try on a parachute at the paratroopers’ exhibit.
  Veterans will personally guide visitors through the World War I and World War II displays and memorabilia.

Free Family Fun for Slated at Penn State Brandywine

  In celebration of summer, Penn State Brandywine will host its annual Spend A Summer Evening Admissions event and Grill ‘n’ Chill barbecue on the campus lawn beginning 5:30p.m., Thursday (July 18).
 Prospective Penn Staters and their families are invited to visit the campus for an interactive information session about the admissions process. There will also be a tour of the campus where prospective students and families will learn about campus activities and hear from current students about what it’s like to attend Penn State Brandywine.

FREE PRO-ACT Program Helps Families Address Addiction

  When someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol, the disease affects the entire family. PRO-ACT’s Family Education Program provides information and support. The free monthly program helps individuals and families recognize and address an addiction problem in a spouse, parent, child or other loved one.
  Led by trained volunteers who have been in the same situation, sessions begin the first week of each month and run one evening a week for three consecutive weeks, addressing such topics as understanding addiction, impact on the family and developing a support network.

   A "smart and compelling" (Publisher's Weekly) debut, The Girls' Guide to Love and Supper Clubs is a story about finding yourself, fulfilling your dreams, and falling in love along the way.

Fun nights in Collingdale

First Baptist Church, Clifton and Andrews avenues in Collingdale, will present some special programs this month. Starting the second week of July they will be hosting “Children Fun Night’s” at locations around the borough. These evening events will include Bible stories, songs, crafts, snacks and games in parks all around town.
The activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude by 8 p.m. The first  date will be Thursday, July 11 at Westmont Drive Park. The following week we will meet on Tuesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 18 at Pusey Avenue Park.  The final week we will meet on Tuesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 25 at Pine Street and Pusey Ave.
Each week will conclude with a “Family Picnic and Animated Film Night” on Saturday evening at the church. These events will begin at 5 p.m. in the church Education Building. After a picnic dinner provided by the church, children from the church’s weekday events will present a special program. The evening will conclude with a showing of a ½-hour animated film on “Heroes of the Faith.” The dates for these are as follows: Saturday July 13 (‘The Eric Liddell Story’), Saturday July 20 (‘The Amy Carmichael Story’) and Saturday July 27 (‘The Samuel Morris Story’).

Annual novena at St. Anne's

The parish of St. Anne, 2328 E. Lehigh Ave. in Philadelphia, will host its annual novena in Honor of Good St. Anne from July 18-26. Novena services are at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Rev. Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R. will be the homilist. A solemn closing ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 26, the Feast of St. Anne. It will be an evening of great solemnity.

Star Wars Day at Ridley Township Public Library

  Star Wars fans are invited to “join the Dark Side” as  Ridley Township Public Library welcomes back members of Garrison Carida 501st Legion, Saturday, July 13, from 1-3 pm at Ridley Township Public Library, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom.
  This two-hour program will give children, teens, and adults the opportunity to experience real live Star Wars characters. Garrison Carida will promote literacy and reading in today’s youth while keeping the attendees fascinated with their movie quality costumes from the greatest movie saga ever told. 
  This free Star Wars event is open to all ages.  During the program, fans will answer movie trivia, collect trading cards, enjoy Star Wars themed refreshments, and meet Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, Bobo Fett and many more.  All are welcome to come in costume, and be sure to bring a camera.

   Due to the July 4 holiday, Swarthmore's First Friday was rescheduled for July 12 with several businesses celebrating the theme of France's Bastille Day as "First on 2nd Friday." 
   At The Creative Living Room from 6-7 p.m.,  Friday, July 12,  the program “Bonsoir Mes Amis~Fun with French” children ages 2-8 will have the chance to sing and dance-a-long with Miss Allison to classic French children’s songs (also in English) and hear stories while learning about France’s art and culture in age appropriate ways.    Heron Companions, 607 Morgan Avenue, Drexel Hill, will host the Director of Senior Victim Services Diane L. Peter for a free informational session for family caregivers 10 am Wed. (July 10).
    Senior Victim Services, Inc., a private non-profit organization, serves victims of crime in Delaware County age 55 years and older.  The organization provides advocacy, assistance and safety within the criminal justice system and with social service agencies and community organizations, in order to restore older person’s lives and prevent further victimization.

International Preacher, Counselor at Chester Heights Campmeeting

  Rev. Dr. James W. DiRaddo will be the speaker at Chester Heights Camp Meeting on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (July 19, 20, and 21) at 7p.m. each evening. Free will offerings will be accepted.
  There will also be a covered dish dinner at 5:30p.m. Saturday, prior to the main program. 
  Individuals and church groups are welcome to bring a dinner and dine in the picnic grove after 5p.m.  The camp meeting received an award from the Delaware County Planning Department’s Heritage Commission in 2011, for restoring eleven 100 year old Victorian cottages.

  First Presbyterian Church of Glenolden and its community partners will present its 6th annual Support Our Troops Care Package Event 10 am to 12 noon Sat. (July 20) in Glenolden Park, W. FREE Concerts All Summer Long at Rose Tree Park

The 2013 concert series features 45 live performances at the outdoor amphitheater in Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence and offers area residents the chance to enjoy a wide variety of FREE entertainment in a popular scenic locale.   “Delaware County Council is pleased to offer this free musical concert series for our residents every summer,” said Delaware County Council Vice Chairman Mario Civera Jr. “The Summer Festival is a fun outing for families, neighbors, friends, and people of all ages. All you need is a blanket or a lawn chair, then sit back and enjoy.”
   Light refreshments are available for purchase at the park during the Summer Festival. No alcohol or pets are permitted.
  The lineup of talent includes all types of music, from classical to Cajun, Motown to Broadway, doo wop to rock and pop, and everything in between.
  There are also two extraordinary dance presentations, the Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble (July 13) and the Brandywine Ballet with the Downingtown School of Rock (July 26).
   There are different shows five nights a week, Wednesday through Sunday evenings, now-Aug. 18. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of two 10 a.m. concerts for children: Steve Pullara & His Cool Beans Band (July 11).
   There are also two evening concerts for children, featuring Makin’ Music Rockin’ Rhythms (July 24) and The Plants (Aug. 4)
   County Parks and Recreation Director Marc Manfre said this year’s concert series features perennial crowd-pleasers such as Robert Eric Band’s Tribute to Billy Joel (July 19), and modern Celtic rock group Blackthorn (Aug. 15).
   “We are also looking forward to presenting several dynamite acts we’ve never had here before, including Still Surfin’s Music of The Beach Boys (July 28),” Manfre said.  One festival newcomer is south Jersey native Payton Taylor (Aug. 1), a 16-year-old singer/songwriter and recording artist whose star is rising so fast, she relocated to Nashville last year. Taylor has performed her high-energy show around the country, appeared at major venues and festivals, and opened for major country artists, including Charlie Daniels, Pam Tillis, Lorrie Morgan and more. She will be appearing at Rose Tree as part of the “Homecoming” leg of her 2013 Summer Tour.
   Other highly anticipated groups new to the festival this year are Yellow Brick Road: Tribute to Elton John (Aug. 16), the Gypsy Jazz group Hot Club of Philadelphia (Aug. 11), local bluegrass band The Rockdale Boys (July 21), and Native American Music Award nominees Spirit Wing (Aug. 8).
   Many audience favorites are back by popular demand, including Bandstand legend Charlie Gracie (July 25), the First Ladies of Rock & Soul (Aug. 2) and the Original Orlons (Aug. 17).
  Special patriotic performances will take place with the U.S. Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus (Aug. 14).
  The final performance will take place Aug. 18 with the Charlie Phillips Band playing the music of Eric Clapton.
  Delaware County Council presents the festival with support from sponsors, including PECO and the Brandywine Conference and Visitors Bureau.
