Holiday fun and more coming up- and it's all for free!

Public invited to tour ‘Bethlehem Village’

  The First Baptist Church of Collingdale, Clifton and Andrews Avenue, will present ‘Bethlehem Village’ for the fifth straight year. This will be a final encore presentation as church members are planning a new program for next year. Everyone is welcome to come and take the tour of the Village, whether a newcomer or a return visitor. This special holiday event will help visitors to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas as outlined in the Bible. The church will host the presentation over two weekends; Friday and Saturday December 13-14, as well as Friday and Saturday December 20- 21.
Individuals and families are invited to take a tour any time between 6:30- 9 pm. Tour guides will escort guests through various scenes where they will view dramas that will tell the Christmas story. Tour groups will even visit with Christmas shepherds and some live sheep. Although most of the scenes are outside, tours will begin in the church auditorium and end inside at the Bethlehem Marketplace. In the Marketplace, all in attendance will enjoy hot cider, holiday breads, and have the opportunity for children to make some special crafts.

Pearl Harbor Day at PVM

The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum (PVM) will celebrate “Pearl Harbor Day”, Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Museum from noon to 5 p.m.  World War II and Korean veterans will be available to share their war experiences.  World War II military vehicles will also be on display.
The Museum  at 12 East State Street, Media,  features personal memorabilia and interactive kiosks that tell the history of World War II and Korea through the eyes of veterans who served in the U.S. military.
PVM is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve protect and promote the legacy of Pennsylvania’s military veterans through education.  The PVM is particularly focused on educating today’s youth about the sacrifices made in times of war for our freedom. 

Admission to the Museum is free.

Valley Voices holiday concert

Valley Voices, a mixed choral group of 35 singers, will present its annual Christmas holiday music program, 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Old Mill in Rose Valley. Music director Nancy Curtis will lead the vocalists in seasonal songs ranging from traditional carols to spirituals, a womens’ Christmas lullaby and more. There will also be an audience sing-along. Robert Moore of Wallingford provides the accompaniment on the piano.
Refreshments will be served at the end of the free program.
Valley Voices meet to rehearse on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. Newcomers who enjoy singing are welcome to join the group.

 Brookhaven Treats Seniors to Holiday Lunch; Photos with Santa

The Brookhaven Recreation Committee will host its 8th Annual Holiday Luncheon for borough senior citizens age 62 and older, 1p.m., Sunday (Dec. 8) at the Municipal Center on Cambridge Road.
Seniors may sign up for tickets through Wednesday, Dec. 4 during normal borough business hours. Admission is free, but tickets are required and seating is limited.
In addition, the Recreation Committee will hold Pictures with Santa Claus 11a.m. to 1p.m., Saturday (Nov. 30) at the Municipal Center for children of the borough.

Photojournalist to Present ‘Turn the World Around’ Dec. 2 at Pendle Hill

Photojournalist Blair Seitz will share photographs and experiences of war and tragedy, peace and joy from his book Turn the World Around: A Photojournalist Discovers Paths to Peace Traveling a War-torn Planet, 7:30 TO 9P.M.,  Monday (Dec. 2) in the Barn at Pendle Hill, 338 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford.
The program is part of Pendle Hill's First Monday Series of free lectures, films, and events.
Seitz is the photographer of 21 books. His photographs have appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Nation’s Business, New York Times Magazine, and Endless Vacations. (His photos are available at BlairSeitz.com.)
Raised Mennonite and now a Quaker, Seitz has a long tradition with the historic peace churches, giving him a unique perspective on the work of photojournalism. He witnessed and documented first-hand the devastating impact of war and its aftermath, and the hope and courage of people in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia, and Palestine.

Live Nativity, tree lighting and Santa at Mercy Fitzgerald

  Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital will kick-off the holiday season with its Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Live Nativity 5 pm Thurs. (Dec. 5).
    The evening’s festivities will include musical entertainment by Darren Lucis and Joanne Farrell of the group Sway, and will also include a live nativity scene. The ceremony will culminate with the lighting of the great American holly tree with the help of the Yeadon and Darby Fire Companies, as well as Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital EMS.
 In honor of the Feast of St. Nick, children can pose with Santa after the tree lighting ceremony, from 5:30 to 6:30 m. Parents are advised to bring their own cameras for photos.
 All attendees will receive  a special Christmas Ornament to decorate their own tree.
 Refreshments will be served in the Cafeteria, located on the first floor of the hospital. Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is a free community event open to the public.

 Prospect Park plans tree lighting 

  The Prospect Park Beautification Committee is sponsoring the annual Prospect Park Christmas Tree Lighting 7 pm Thursday, December 5 at Park Square, between 9th & 10th Avenues. The Interboro High School Singers will provide holiday music.  Bring friends and family and enjoy this traditional community holiday event. The Committee will collect canned goods for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, as well as hold a 50-50 raffle that evening.

Woodlyn Baptist announces Christmas services

Woodlyn Baptist Church invites the community to its Christmas events.
 On Sunday, Dec. 15, the Woodlyn Baptist Church Choir will present “The Mystery and
the Majesty,” a  cantata by Joseph Martin that will bring the Christmas story to life
through song and dramatization. A dessert buffet will follow.
  A Christmas Eve service will be held Tues., Dec. 24, celebrating the miracle of Christmas through music (carols) and word.

Tax Talk at Swarthmore Library

The Swarthmore Public Library will present a workshop to help citizens plan for taxes 2p.m., Tuesday (Dec. 3. The event will cover how to plan finances in light of tax considerations, and is not a service for the preparation of tax returns.  This workshop is offered through the auspices of Society for Financial Awareness and the Financial Awareness Foundation.
The speaker will cover the following: tax planning vs. tax preparation; tax liability, current tax law changes; most common mistakes and the impact of tax on investments.

Brookhaven Slates Holiday Tree Lighting

 Brookhaven will hold its Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony 6p.m., Sunday (Dec. 8) on the grounds of the Municipal Center on Cambridge Road.
Area residents are invited to usher in the holiday season with family, friends, and neighbors and enjoy the beautiful sounds of young Christmas carolers.  Light refreshments will be served and Santa will attend.
The event is sponsored by the Brookhaven Recreation Committee and the Brookhaven Business & Professional Association (BBPA).

Help Offered for Families of Addicted

Pro-Act Family Education Program will offer free sessions for local families beginning Tuesday, Dec. 3 in Media.
When someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol, the disease affects the entire family. Each month PRO-ACT (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization–Achieving Community Together) hosts a Family Addiction Education Program to help individuals and family recognize and address an addiction problem in a spouse, parent, child or other loved one.
Led by trained volunteers who have been in the same situation, the information and support programs begin on the first Tuesday of each month and run for three consecutive Tuesday evenings, from 7 to 9p.m. at Holcomb Behavioral Health Services in Media.

Free historian presentation
Historian Andrew C. Isenberg will visit the Marple Public Library on Thursday December 5 at 7pm to discuss his new
book, Wyatt Earp: A Vigilante Life. Isenberg is a professor at Temple University. Register for this free event by calling the library at (610) 356-1510.

Aston Tree Lighting Ceremony to be held on Dec. 6

Aston Township will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony 6:30 p.m., Dec. 6 at the Aston Community Center on Concord Rd. In addition to the tree lighting, the gymnasium will be decorated, Santa will make an appearance and light refreshments will be served.

Santa Will Light Up Media Friday

Santa will arrive in Media 5p.m., Friday night to light up the borough – and he’ll share the stage with special guests.
Attendees will warmed up with live entertainment from Makin’ Music, the Media Theatre and the Phillie Phanatic before Santa’s grand entrance on Media Fire Company’s truck.
The family event was moved from its original location on State Street to the Courthouse last year and festivities will again take place in front of this historic landmark of Delaware County on Front Street in Media. Parking will be free throughout the borough on this day, Black Friday, and on Saturday, Nov. 30 for Small Business Saturday.
Star Wars Characters (501st Garrison Carida) will be at the event and throughout town to help collect Toys for Tots as well as food for the Media Food Bank. Attendees may bring a Star Wars themed gift to Earth & State on State Street, and the 501st Garrison Carrida will deliver it in costume to a child at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
The event is sponsored by the Media Business Authority, Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, Riddle Hospital, and Republic Bank, with holiday lighting donations from Title Alliance and Philip Green & Son. Trees were donated by Linvalla Orchards.

Become an Informed Consumer with Consumers’ Checkbook

Delaware County residents can now access the Delaware Valley Consumers’ Checkbook for free with a DCLS library card. The online resource features rigorous ratings of local auto repair shops, plumbers, veterinarians, banks, doctors, dentists, carpet cleaners, and more. Additionally there are in-depth articles with advice on selecting a service. The resource is provided by a non-profit organization with no advertising to slant reviews.
CBS 3 noted that Consumers’ Checkbook’s "Easy-to-follow charts map out everything from price and reliability to quality of customer service."
It suggests which businesses are worth a try -- and which, by implication, to treat warily."
To access Consumers’ Checkbook, have a library card and visit www.delcolibraries.org then click the POWER Library icon. Select Consumers’ Checkbook from the list of resources. You will need to create an account with the service to help guarantee accurate ratings.
Any Delaware County resident can receive a DCLS library card by bringing identification to any DCLS member library. (If under age 18, a parent’s signature on the registration card is required.)
The Delaware County Library System is the department of county government responsible for providing support services to public libraries.

Free Soup At St. James

  St. James Episcopal Church, 11th and Lincoln Aves., Prospect Park has resumed its 'Soup'er Lunch at 11 am Tuesdays. The  lunch is free of charge (donations are gratefully accepted).Everyone in the community is welcome.

  Sharon Hill to hold Senior Luncheon, Tree Lighting

The Sharon Hill Recreation Board will host its annual Senior Luncheon 12:30 pm Sun. (Dec. 8) at the Sharon Hill Fire Company, 230 Sharon Avenue.  Snow date is Sun. (Dec. 15). This year’s theme will be “Bring a former Sharon Hill senior who was once a resident with you.” Current residents are encouraged to bring a senior who has moved away from the borough to the luncheon this year.

  Sharon Hill will hold its Tree Lighting Ceremony Sat. (Dec. 7) at Tully Park, Clifton Ave. and Chester Pike. Rain date is Dec. 14. Santa will arrive at 7 pm on top of a Sharon Hill Fire Company truck. Everyone is welcome to sing traditional carols, drink hot chocolate and eat Christmas cookies. Santa will be in the gazebo for children to share their wish list. Parents should bring their cameras.
 
FREE  Thanksgiving Dinner for vets and their families offered

American Legion Post 777, 137 Walter St., Crum Lynne, will hold their annual Thanksgiving dinner for veterans and their families 12-4 pm November 28 in the upstairs hall.
  All veterans and their families are welcome.

Free Concord event

Concord will usher in the holidays, Dec. 6, with the annual tree lighting festival. The event will include a visit from Santa, the chance to write letters to him, make bags of traditional reindeer food, create crafts, listen to carolers and enjoy cookies and milk.
The festivities will begin 6p.m. at the township community center, 43 Thornton Road.

Forget the reindeer. Santa’s got a better way to get to Glenolden Borough.

The man in red will climb aboard a fire truck for his annual arrival in Glenolden Borough, scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8 at Glenolden Park.
The event will begin at 6:45 p.m. with caroling in the gazebo, followed by Santa’s 7 p.m. arrival. He will visit with children in the Glenolden Library, where refreshments will be available.
The event will also feature baked goods made by Delaware County Technical School culinary students. It is sponsored by borough council, the Parks and Recreation Committee and the borough’s Historical Commission.

Thanksgiving Meals Available for those in need

  On Thanksgiving Day, the First Presbyterian Church of Glenolden, 2 South Chester Pike, Glenolden, will host its 20th annual meal delivery and sit-down dinner at 12 noon. Over 500 meals were delivered last year and 135 attended the sit-down meal at the church. Hundreds are expected to enjoy the meal again this year.    The church is seeking volunteers for the cleanup day at the curch 8 am to 3 pm Sat. (Nov. 23). Volunteers are also needed Wed. (Nov. 27) to wash dishes and silverware and set up at 5 pm (tables, napkins, tableware, decorations, preparing trays, and more).
   If anyone in the community can donate and cook a turkey, let the church know by e-mailing norma.t.wright@dupont.com as soon as possible since members run to the local grocery store trying to find the best deals on turkeys this week. The staff prefers turkeys over 20 pounds to cook themselves so they can feed as many as possible.Cooked turkeys and pies can be brought the morning of Thanksgiving or Wednesday night.
   Financial donations are also accepted to help defray the costs. Checks can be written out to First Presbyterian Church of Glenolden with notation ‘Thanksgiving’.

StARR Celebrates National Model Railroad Month  with FREE holiday open house

 StARR, (St. Alban’s Railroad,) will host their 23rd annual holiday open house on Dec. 28-29, Jan. 4-5, 18-19, Feb. 1-2 and 15-16, all Saturday and Sunday events. No admission is charged, but donations are greatly appreciated.  The railroad's completley rebuilt steel mill continues to expand.  Also featured are a maintenance of way train, a finely detailed oil refinery, and improvements to the Wilson Coke Plant which is still in progress.

The Saint Albans Railroad Fellowship (StARR) is an outreach ministry of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 3625 Chapel Road in Newtown Square.  The club has been meeting for 23 fun-filled years in the basement under the Thrift Shop.  New members are always welcome.
