FREE Flu Shots, FREE Tax Help and more- check it out!

Free Flu Shots Available

To address this year’s widespread flu activity, Delaware County Council is partnering with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to offer a free, walk-in flu shot clinic from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Penn State Brandywine campus in Middletown Township.  All local residents, ages six months and older, who have not gotten a flu shot this season, are invited to attend the clinic in the Tomeszko Classroom Building on the Penn State Brandywine campus, 25 Yearsley Mill Road, off of Route 352.
Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle said Pennsylvania is now experiencing widespread flu activity, with the highest numbers in the western region of the state.
“We are seeing widespread flu activity here in Delaware County, with the state Department of Health (DoH) reporting 193 confirmed lab-positive cases in Delaware County as of Jan. 18,” Chairman McGarrigle said. “It is not too late to get a flu shot, which is the best prevention against getting the flu. If we all get vaccinated, we’ll stop this nasty flu in its tracks.”
Maureen Hennessey Herman, Ed.D., director of the County Department of Intercommunity Health, said the DoH reported 8,812 flu cases statewide for this flu season, through Jan. 18, including 23 influenza-related deaths.
“Doctors and emergency rooms are reporting an increase in the number of serious cases. The best prevention is to get a flu shot, and to practice good hygiene. Wash your hands often,” she said. “If you put off getting a flu vaccine, now is the time to act.”
The free walk-in flu clinic will be staffed by medical professionals and workers from the Delaware County State Health Center, the County Department of Intercommunity Health and the Delaware County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC).
Hennessey Herman said flu clinic fliers are being distributed through the County’s library system and senior centers to inform people about the Feb. 1 clinic.
The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months. The vaccine is especially important for the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions. It takes 10 to 14 days to obtain the full protective benefit from the flu vaccine.
For more information on seasonal influenza, contact your local health care provider or visit www.health.state.pa.us. People can also visit www.flu.gov for information and educational videos.
Information pertaining to flu shot availability is posted on the County website at www.co.delaware.pa.us. Click on the flu link. People who do not have Internet access can call the Department of Intercommunity Health Coordination at (610) 891-5311 for sites and dates.

Hair Cuttery Salons in Delaware County to Provide Free Haircuts for the Homeless

For every adult or child who visits any Delaware County Hair Cuttery salon, including the salon in Newtown Square, to purchase a haircut on February 4-5, a free haircut certificate will be donated to a homeless person right in their community through local organizations such as the United Way and Salvation Army.
Hair Cuttery salons nationwide have participated in the annual August Share-A-Haircut program, where for every child’s haircut purchased, one in turn is donated to a disadvantaged child in the community, just in time for back-to-school. Hair Cuttery is now adding another way to give with next month’s Share-A-Haircut for the homeless.
“Through our Share-A-Haircut program, more than 725,000 free haircut certificates have been donated to children in need over the years,” said Dennis Ratner, Founder and CEO of Hair Cuttery. “We’re evolving this program so adults in the community who are in need of a fresh look for a job interview or simply for added self-confidence as they get back on their feet can benefit as well.”
In partnership with government and non-profit social service organizations near each salon location, vouchers are distributed to adults to obtain a free haircut this winter. Last year, 100,000 free haircut certificates were donated through Share-A-Haircut at nearly 900 Hair Cuttery salon locations nationwide, a result of excellent participation from Hair Cuttery communities.
Hair Cuttery is proud of its history of charitable giving through local and national causes, including (but not limited to): Dress for Success, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, Buzzing 4 Change, The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Easter Seals, The Hero Campaign and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Transition Media Hosts ‘Gasland Part II’ Film Screening

Transition Town Media, along with Food & Water Watch Pennsylvania and Delaware Riverkeeper Network, will present the film “Gasland Part II” 6p.m., Friday (Jan. 24) at Media Friends, 125 West 3rd Street Media. The evening will include an introduction to the film, film screening, and panel discussion.
In this follow-up to his Oscar-nominated film “Gasland,” filmmaker Josh Fox uses his trademark dark humor to take a deeper look at the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil. Pennsylvania is a leading state in the fracking industry.
“Gasland II,” which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, shows how the stakes have been raised on all sides in this important environmental issue. The film argues that the gas industry’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth and that fracked wells inevitably leak over time, contaminating water and air.
There will be an opportunity after the film to ask questions and discuss concerns with members of Food and Water Watch Pennsylvania and Delaware River Keepers. For more information, contact  info@transitiontownmedia.org or go to the website: http://transitiontownmedia.org.
