Training on Youth Mental Health First Aid
Free, full-day training May 12 for adults who interact with young people
A training program offered to help adults dealing with adolescents who experience an emotional,  mental health or addictions crisis is being offered May 12 by the Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health in partnership with Child Guidance Resource Centers and Delaware County’s Systems of Care Initiative.
The full-day training is free and will take place 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, May 12, in room 171 of the Delaware County Intermediate Unit in Morton.
The training is designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.
Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human service workers and others how to help an adolescent (ages 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.
The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a five-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations.
According to Shannon Thomas, coordinator for Children’s Mental Health at the County Office of Behavioral Health, people are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional or mental health crisis than a heart attack.
The brochure for the program states: “Sometimes, first aid isn’t CPR, the Heimlich or calling 9-1-1. Sometimes first aid is you.”
Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches a five-step action plan to offer initial help to young people showing signs of a crisis, and connect with them the appropriate professional, peer, social or self-help care. Anyone can take the 8-hour course, but it is specifically designed for teachers, coaches, leaders of faith communities and youth group leaders.
The program is free, but preregistration is required by April 28. For information contact Lisa Blair from the county Office of Behavioral Health at 610-713-2365.

Help for teens and adults who Stutter is as close as the neighborhood library
For the three million Americans who stutter, not being able to say their own name is just one of the many challenges which confront them as they start their work day.   Help is available for adults and teenagers who stutter in the form of a DVD, If You Stutter: Advice for Adults available at most public libraries. Some libraries have an older video version.
"We focus on demonstrating a variety of therapy strategies that are appropriate in working with adults and teens," explains Dr. Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder.  "We also answer questions about stuttering and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be reduced."
"Stuttering remains a mystery to most people," said Jane Fraser, president of the Stuttering Foundation. "Research strongly supports the fact that stuttering is not caused by psychological problems nor are people who stutter any less intelligent than those who don't."
"This DVD is meant to give stutterers some insight into the tools they need to begin dealing with stuttering, but it also offers good ideas for family members, speech-language pathologists, and health care professionals," said Professor Barry Guitar of the University of Vermont. Guitar is one of six nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.
"We have seen people who stutter not only learn to deal with stuttering effectively," said Dr. Barry Guitar of Northwestern University," but go on to become better than average communicators."  He notes that this century's most eloquent speaker, Winston Churchill, stuttered and yet became a respected statesman renowned for his oratory skills.
The DVD features men and women who stutter from the United States and Canada, discussing their experiences with stuttering and the techniques that have helped them.  They talk openly about the problems they face in the work place and how stuttering affects their lives and their self esteem.
Books and DVDs produced by the 66-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation are available free to any public library.  A library that will shelve them can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail info@stutteringhelp.org, or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Delco Field and Stream Celebrates 75th Anniversary with upcoming free events
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, Delaware County Field & Stream Association at 13 Chester Creek Road in Brookhaven, offers range facilities and educational programs for hunting, fishing, conservation, archery, and shooting sports. A private association, it allows members and their invited guests to use the facilities and resources for the education of wildlife conservation through hunting, fishing and a number shooting activities.
Delaware County Field & Stream holds a number of matches and competitions that are generally open to public participation. (Find out more at http://www.dcfsa.org or by contacting the club office.)
The beginning of Delaware County Field & Stream was the organization of sportsmen that has become one of the largest and diversified clubs in the Delaware Valley. Founded in November, 1938 outdoor columnist Bill Everman, was writing about hunting and fishing for two local papers in Chester and Interboro. In a series of articles, he stirred a few local sportsmen into forming a club for the purpose of raising and stocking fish and wild game and to enjoy shooting shotguns, rifles and pistols in an area out in the country, away from the local villages and Philadelphia.
The club became incorporated in 1940 as a non-profit conservation organization. The purposes of the organization, as stated in its charter are: “To stimulate the interest of the people of Delaware County in general outdoor activities and to develop the opportunities for the enjoyment of such recreation by the re-stocking of fish and game, the procurement of laws and enforcement thereof for the protection of wildlife, and to educate the general public in the principles of conservation in relation to our natural resources, all by publicity, exhibitions and public meetings, and for these objects to organize as a group for their earlier attainment.
Each year DCFSA holds a number of free events for the community. They include: trout stocking in Chester Creek. (May 10); National Hunting & Fishing Day (Sept. 27); Ladies Day (Oct. 18); and Hunter Education Classes (ongoing).
