FREE After-School Events for Youth!

MEDIA, PA — Holcomb Prevention & Education is kicking off 2011 with FREE events for youth in seventh through twelfth grades, to be held at the Corner S.P.O.T. in Holcomb’s Media office. The Delaware County Youth Connection (DCYC) meets every Monday from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. for youth in grades 8-12. The mission of DCYC is to educate high school students on healthy lifestyle choices through alternative activities. At weekly meetings, youth will participate in discussions with peers, listen to guest speakers, and plan and implement prevention activities in the community, including awareness campaigns and events. TGI Fridays give youth a safe space to hang out with their friends and watch movies! TGI Friday Movie Nights take place every Friday starting January 14, 2011 from at the Corner S.P.O.T.  These FREE activities will run weekly starting Monday, January 10, 2011 through Friday, March 25, 2011. Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems (HBHS) and Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI) were awarded, through the Office of Behavioral Health, Division of Drug and Alcohol Programs, the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) to implement community-based programs to reduce and prevent the early initiation and regular use of alcohol in middle and high school students. HBHS and HCI have partnered with local businesses and youth-focused organizations to create a network of “Safe Spaces” for tweans and teens to go to after school, evenings, and weekends.  These safe spaces, named “The S.P.O.T.” (Supervised Programs Organized for Teens) Network, offer various activities for teens in an alcohol and drug-free environment.

Holcomb Prevention and Education Services, funded by the Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health, Division of Drug and Alcohol, provides education, trainings, consultations, public awareness campaigns, prevention initiatives, student assessments and referrals as part of a planned strategy to prevent or reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
