Chester, Pa. – The Widener University Art Gallery will host the Philadelphia/Tri State Artists Equity Association 64th Anniversary Members Juried Exhibition from April 3 through June 22.
According to Molly Light, anniversary exhibition chair, this year’s show reflects the great variety of professional artists who comprise the membership of Artist Equity. Abstract paintings of all sizes and various mediums, realistic and impressionistic landscapes, still lifes, photography, sculpture, prints and collage are all included. “From contemporary to traditional styles, there is a little bit of something to appeal to everyone,” Wolf said.
The juror for the exhibition is Ellen Priest, an abstract painter who creates multi-layered works with brilliant color and movement inspire by jazz music.   “When I first arrived to jury the artworks put randomly in the gallery, I was struck by an uncanny similarity in the strengths of the strong work and the weaknesses of the less compelling work,” Priest said. “Certain themes like contrast, the structure of forms and subject matter ran through the whole batch. Those will be the focus of my talk at the opening, especially as they relate to prize-winning works.”
The gallery will host a reception for the exhibition from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6 including a curatorial talk by Priest and the presentation of awards.

Free Backyard Buffers and Rain Barrel Making Workshop for Darby Creek Area Residents

The Pennsylvania Resources Council, in partnership with the Darby Creek Valley Association, is presenting a series of four free stormwater management workshops. The workshop, titled “Backyard Buffers & Rain Barrel Making: Simple Ways to Protect the Darby Creek at Home,” is designed to educate area residents about storm water management practices that they can implement.
During the multimedia presentation, workshop attendees will learn about the problems associated with stormwater runoff, ways to conserve water in their homes, and watershed friendly landscaping techniques. After the presentation, attendees will learn how to construct and install fully functional rain barrels made from recycled food grade barrels. A rain barrel is a system that connects to your downspout to collect and store rain water from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains, streams and rivers.  Residents will be given the rain barrels to take home and use on their properties to help alleviate stormwater runoff.
The first “Backyard Buffers & Rain Barrel Making” workshop of the spring will be held on Wednesday(March 27) at the Collingdale Municipal Building.  The next workshop will be held on April 30 at Upper Darby Township’s Senior Café and the final workshop will be on May 29 at the Twentieth Century Club in Lansdowne. All three workshops will start at 6:30pm.
There is a limited amount of rain barrels available at each workshop. A rain barrel will be provided to the first 60 workshop attendees who are Darby Creek Watershed area residents. Limit one rain barrel per household. The workshops are being funded through a Growing Greener Plus grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Residents can register for Backyard Buffers and Rain Barrel Making Workshop by visiting www.prc.org or by calling Diana Andrejczak, Manager of Education at 610-353-1555 ext. 232. Online registration is preferred.

Easter Bunny Season Worries Rabbit Rescuers;
Free Education Program Planned

The Animal Coalition of Delaware County (ACDC), a non-profit animal rescue and adoption organization, will address the impending purchase of countless numbers of Easter bunnies - and the subsequent neglect and abandonment of many of them - by presenting Bunny Basics: How to Care for Your Pet Rabbit 1-2:30 pm  Sat. (March 23) at the Rocky Run YMCA, 1299 West Baltimore Pike, Media. The presentation is free and open to the public and is aimed at adults and children seven years and older.
"Rabbit rescuers and educators dread this time of year, because we know that many people acquire Easter bunnies without learning about their needs beforehand," said Lori Vear, Rabbit Director of ACDC. "After the holiday, many of these new pets face neglect or abandonment once their novelty has worn off and owners realize they require more work than anticipated. Overcrowded shelters and rescue groups then face an onslaught of homeless rabbits."
Many people mistakenly think that rabbits are low-maintenance pets, not realizing that they require daily play time with their families, a specific diet that includes hay and rabbit-safe vegetables, and living space that provides plenty of room to run, jump, and play. Rabbit experts cringe at the thought of these active, social animals being kept in a cage and fed nothing but commercial rabbit pellets.
"Rabbits are definitely not low-maintenance pets," said Leah Gordon, creator of the Bunny Basics program and former Rabbit Director of ACDC. "They are gentle, playful, affectionate animals, however, and can be a wonderful addition to a well-prepared home."
ACDC volunteers will distribute educational materials, demonstrate proper rabbit handling, and discuss topics such as healthy diet, humane housing, litter training, and rabbit proofing a home.  Vear reminds people that rabbits require the safety and comfort of an indoor home.
"Due to their physical fragility and their need for a calm environment, they are not suitable for homes with young children. Even older children should be supervised by an adult at all times," she stated.
Rabbits are the third most common animal relinquished to SPCAs, and there are hundreds of homeless rabbits currently in shelters and rescue groups throughout the Delaware Valley.
The Animal Coalition of Delaware County (ACDC) is an all-volunteer, non-profit animal education, rescue and adoption organization. ACDC's dogs, cats and rabbits reside in the safe haven of a foster home until they are adopted. Adoptable animals may be viewed on the group's website, www.acdc.ws.

Newtown Square Historical Society to Present FREE Program
Wednesday,  March 20, 2013
“SANDY FLASH”

The Newtown Square Historical Society is proud to have noted local Speaker and Historian Eric Chandlee Wilson as their March 20th speaker.  Wilson is co-author of “West Chester, the First 200 Years: 1799-1999 Bicentennial Souvenir”  His subject will be the Robin Hood type character that was born and operated in Chester County, PA, and died in 1778.  Remember, at this period of time, Delaware County was part of Chester County.  James Fitzpatrick, better known as “Sandy Flash” became legend with many acts of  reckless bravado, some performed in our Squire Tavern, where  he taunted our local officials and law officers who attempted to arrest him.  Instead Sandy Flash ambushed and robbed them.  Sandy Flash has become a figure of folklore in the areas of Chester County and Delaware County. Several streets in the area are named for him, including a road within Ridley Creek State Park.
Admission is FREE and all are welcome, so please come and bring a friend.  Refreshments will be served. Join us at the Dunwoody Village Auditorium at 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March  20th.  More details can be found on the Society’s Facebook and website:  http/www.historicnewtownsquare.org/
