Swarthmore’s Annual Pageant of the Nativity Set for Dec. 22
The Swarthmore Nativity Pageant Committee has begun preparations for the 39th biennial Pageant of the Nativity. The Pageant has been a Christmas tradition in Swarthmore since 1938, and has been given almost every other year as a gift to the community. This year’s event is set for 5 to 7p.m., Sunday (Dec. 22) at Lang Music Hall at Swarthmore College.
The performance lasts for approximately one hour and consists of five tableaux from the Old and New Testaments, with scripture narrative and choral accompaniment by a volunteer choir from Swarthmore and Wallingford.
Approximately 150 community members are involved in its production. Many cast members have participated in numerous performances, and in some cases, as many as three generations of a family have played a role. Cast members remain anonymous to the public to preserve reverence.
This is the fifteenth performance to be given at Lang Music Hall on the Swarthmore College campus, with its scenic wooded backdrop setting and ample parking.
All are welcome; there is no admission charge and the performance is most enjoyed with children over the age of five.

Advent Evensong at Trinity church
The Choir of Trinity Episcopal Church in Swarthmore will sing a service of choral evening prayer for Advent 5p.m., Sunday (Dec. 15).
The service will feature three choral works from the time of the Second World War.  Francis Poulenc’s “Litanies to the Black Virgin” marks a turning point in the composer’s life, arising from the tragic loss of several friends in 1936.  Herbert Howells’ “Kings College Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis” was written during that composer’s stay in Cambridge during the 1940s as a replacement for a colleague fighting with the British forces.  The service will also include the festival cantata “Rejoice in the Lamb,” by Benjamin Britten, whose centennial is being marked this year by musicians around the world.
The congregation of Trinity Church welcomes everyone to join them for this beautiful and moving service.  The church is at the corner of Chester Road and College Avenue, directly across from the main entrance of Swarthmore College.
A free nursery will be provided and a reception will follow. Call the parish office at 610-544-2297 for more information.
