FREE Screening Of Human Trafficking Documentary

Screening of groundbreaking film on human trafficking

The local anti-trafficking organization BRVHeart (link) will hold a fundraiser and screen a groundbreaking documentary about sex trafficking and human slavery on Friday Sept. 23 from 7-9 p.m. at
425 West Front Media Street, Media, Pa. 19063
.

According to the creators of Call and Response, in 2009 “slave traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks combined.” Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, Daryl Hannah, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Nicholas Kristof, and many other prominent political and cultural figures offer first hand accounts of this 21st century trade in the documentary. Performances from Grammy-winning and critically acclaimed artists such as Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Imogen Heap, Five For Fighting, Switchfoot and Tom Petty's Heartbreakers move this chilling information into inspiration for stopping it.

BRVHeart will present Call and Response as a way of educating community members about the fact that human slavery is worse than it’s ever been, there are 27 million people who are trafficked around the world because of an industry that makes 32 billion dollars a year (www.polarisproject.org). Sex-trafficking is not only a problem overseas, it also hits close to home. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, up to 17,500 foreigners are trafficked into the U.S. each year. And the number of U.S. citizens trafficked within the country each year is even higher—an estimated 200,000 American children are at risk of being trafficked into the sex industry (U.S. Dept. of Justice 2005 Report to Congress on U.S. Government Efforts to Combat Trafficking in Persons in FY 2003).

The other important purpose of the event is to raise money for Love 146, an internationally known organization that works restore and heal children who were victims of sex trafficking through psychological, emotional, and preventative care and for Todd and Anna Morrison, an abolitionist couple who will work in Cambodia with rescued victims of trafficking.
