Art Opening
“Color Splash”

Rhonda Garland
&
Lois Schlachter

Tyme Gallery is proud to present “Color Splash”, with award winning artists Rhonda Garland & Lois Schlachter. The opening reception is Friday October 14th, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. The exhibition runs October 14th through November 8th

A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Rhonda Garland grew up surrounded by art and the magical, natural landscapes of the American Southwest. Being blessed with artists as parents, she began working with jewelry, sculpture, needle arts and drawing. Rhonda was introduced to calligraphy in a high school art class. She began by learning Italic and Gothic lettering. She fell in love with it and has been working with it in some form or fashion ever since.
Rhonda received her BA in Business Administration and later went on to earn a certificate in Layout and Production Art from the Art Institute of Houston, winning Best of Show and First Place awards in their student show. As an active member of the Houston Calligraphers’ Guild, she co-edited their newsletter for several years. She also owned a successful free-lance graphic design business for eight years before moving to Pennsylvania in 1999 with her family.
"My paintings are meant to capture your eye, stir your imagination and let you bask in their color." Currently she is working with watercolors and acrylics and creating three dimensional collages. Rhonda finds mixing and contrasting color against color and color next to ink results in forms that are quite satisfying. She loves experimenting with pattern, texture and shape, especially when combined with letter forms and calligraphic flourishes.
Rhonda won first place in Tyme Gallery’s juried exhibition “Inner Essence” in 2005. She has won Visitor's Choice and Honorable Mentions at several North Penn Art Alliance Shows in Lansdale. In 2009 Rhonda won an award at the Montgomery County Guild of Professional Artists show. In 2010, was accepted into the Keytone National Show in Mechanicsburg, PA. Rhonda has been involved with the Philadelphia Calligraphers’ Society since 1999 and served as their Exhibit Chairman for four years. Through their juried exhibits she was awarded several Honorable Mentions.
Lois Schlachter is a native of Philadelphia and is currently residing along the banks of the Perkiomen Creek in Spring Mount.  According to Lois, “My personal aim is to have my Art displayed where it can be lived with, loved and enjoyed. This is more important to me than a monetary exchange”. As she paints and creates she likes to interpret the world around her. Her art reflects a love of shapes in space, handsome and vibrant color, balance and classical rhythm. Each work is an intrinsic part of herself, reflecting hours, weeks and some- times years of her intimate relationship with her paintings.
Lois received a Certificate of Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art, now University of the Arts. She worked as Director of Recreation for the City of Philadelphia and Fairmount Park from 1968 to 1998. Lois also serves on the Exhibition Committee for the Philadelphia Sketch Club.
Lois received FOUR Special Recognition Awards for her artwork in the "13th Annual Contemporary Art Juried Online International Art Exhibition" hosted by Upstream People Gallery. The exhibition is featured online at www.upstreampeoplegallery.com  starting May, 2011 and continues for 12 months, closing April 30, 2012. This international exhibition received approximately 200 entries from around the world and 50 artists were selected by the juror Laurence Bradshaw, Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Professor Bradshaw states: "LOIS is great with the curvilinear and polychromatic palette uses in her acrylic paintings. Balloon Fiesta is a nice abstraction of the idea. Clamming is another dynamic piece with the vibrancy and the movement all over. In Links there are areas of rest and then movement with the composition of curvilinear forms. The light and dark in the colors adds greatly."
Victoria Donohoe, art critic for The Philadelphia Inquirer, critiqued an exhibition, Right for August, "In the Good Old Summertime" at West Chester's Art Trust Gallery.  The exhibition featured light and breezy works by seven Artists Equity painters including Lois Schlachter. Inspired by warm summer light and cool summer nights, one of the standouts, Lois Schlachter's edgy yet somehow soothing semi-abstractions with figures. Schlachter's painting "Seaside" was featured for the advertisement for this show.
Both Garland and Schlachter add color, brilliance and masterful movement to their abstractions.  Both are accomplished and gifted in their own way, only seeing their work can make one understand their majesty.
"Color Splash," is a feast for the eyes and soul. The opening reception is Friday, October 14th, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Come, meet and greet the artists. The reception is catered with hors d' oeuvres from Antonella's Italian Kitchen in Rosemont and is FREE to the public. The artwork is on sale and exhibit from October 14th through November 8th. Tyme Gallery is located at
17 W. Eagle Road
in Havertown. For additional information about the exhibition, or for directions, call 610-853-1215 or check out their website at www.tymegallery.com.
