FREE Training For Volunteers
Because of an increase in adults seeking English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction in the Upper Darby area, Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC) will be holding a just-announced training for volunteer ESL tutors.
The free 10-hour training for volunteer ESL tutors will be offered from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Crossroads Community Church,
104 Heather Road
in Upper Darby (one block east of 69th and Chestnut streets). Attendance at all four sessions and pre-registration are required. Once trained, volunteers meet with their adult students twice a week at a mutually convenient public location in Delaware County, such as a local library. DCLC has an urgent need for volunteer ESL tutors in Upper Darby, and this training is being held to better meet that need. To learn more, visit http://www.delcoliteracy.org/ or call Susan at 610-876-4811.
For 36 years Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC) has been serving adults in the area, helping them to increase their communication skills and to participate more fully in the society by teaching them to read, write, and speak and understand English. Free services are provided in Adult Basic Education (reading, writing, and math), English as a Second Language, and GED Preparation. The Literacy Council is the oldest, largest and only organization in the county whose sole mission is adult literacy.
In addition to the ESL tutor training, a free tutor training session for volunteer reading tutors will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 18, 20, 25, and 27, 2011, 6:30-9 p.m., at Delaware County Literacy Council, 2217 Providence Avenue in Chester. Attendance at all four sessions and pre-registration are required. To learn more, visit http://www.delcoliteracy.org/ or call Susan at 610-876-4811.

Peace Center Film Series Continues
The Peace Center of Delaware County First Friday Large Screen Free Film Series continues at 7p.m., Oct. 7 at 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield.
The 2010 Spanish film, “Even The Rain (Tambien la Lluvia),”  is in Spanish with English subtitles, and concerns a film crew, headed by its director and producer, who arrive in Bolivia to make a film about the conquest of Latin America by the Spaniards  500 years ago.  Filming coincides with the "water wars" of 2000 in which protests against the government's privatization of the water supply rocked the nation. Lines between past and present imperialism, fiction and film, become blurred, especially in the film-within-a film scenes.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments.  For more information and directions, visit http://www.delcopeacecenter.org/ or call 610-544-1818.
