‘A Man and His Ship’ Author gives free presentation at Wallingford Presbyterian Church

  As part of its Brown Bag Luncheon series, Wallingford Presbyterian Church will welcome Steven Ujifusa, author of A Man and His Ship, at noon, Tuesday (Feb. 11) at the church.
A Harvard graduate, he has a master’s degree in Historic Preservation.
    A Man and His Ship is the story of one man’s quest to build the fastest, finest ocean liner in history -- set against the politics, culture, and enterprise of twentieth century America. William Francis Gibbs was an American original. Forced to drop out of Harvard following his family’s sudden financial ruin, he overcame debilitating shyness and lack of formal training to become the visionary creator of some of the finest ships in history.  A Man and His Ship was published by Simon & Schuster in 2012 and was named by The Wall Street Journal as one of the top ten non-fiction books of the year.
Coffee and dessert will be provided after the talk. There is no charge.

Youth and Young Adult Group Forming at Our Lady of Charity Church

Our Lady of Charity Parish will hold a kick-off meeting for a new Youth and Young Adult Group11:30a.m., Sunday (Feb. 16) in the church hall (bottom level), 231 Upland Road, Brookhaven.
The group’s purpose is to have area youth get acquainted, hold social activities and perform service projects in the community.
At the meeting there will be an overview of the variety of programs planned in 2014 for each age group and attendees will be able to express th4eir ideas.
This Youth and Young Adult Group is one of the most comprehensive in the Delco area and has teamed together with three other local parishes to offer the widest variety of programs for youth and young adults.
There will be separate groups for the following age brackets: sixth through eighth graders; ninth through twelfth graders; and 20’s through 30’s, singles, married, moms and dads.

Free Community Dinner at Christ UMC

Christ United Methodist Church hosts free community dinner5:30 to 7p.m., the fourth Wednesday of each month. The next dinner will be held Feb. 26. Child care and homework help is available.

Media-U.P. Library Hosts Jitterbugs, Cupcakes, Geronimo Stilton

Media Upper Providence has several special upcoming programs including the following:
--Jitterbugs is set for 11a.m., Tuesday (Feb. 11). It’s an interactive musical story time for all ages. Registration is not required.
--Teen Cupcake Wars Competition is for teens in grades 6 through 12 and is set for 6:30p.m., Wednesday (Feb. 12).  Attendees should decorate a cupcake inspired by a favorite book, and the best design wins a prize. The library will provide cupcakes and decorations and attendees may bring their own toppings. Registration is required.
--Geronimo Stilton Party is set for ages 6 through 10 at 4:30p.m., Tuesday (Feb. 18). Attendees will celebrate the adventurous mouse with games, trivia, crafts and snacks. Geronimo Stilton will be a special guest at the party. Registration is required.

Free Cardiac Screenings Feb. 22

  Aidan’s Heart Foundation, a local charitable foundation has partnered with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to provide free heart screening for students 5 to 19 years of age.
  The screening will be administered by the Cardiology Team from Children’s Hospital. The screening checks for conditions which indicate risk for a sudden cardiac arrest. Every year, thousands of children die from sudden cardiac arrest. The free screening will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Strath Haven Middle School, 200 South Providence Road, Wallingford.

Woodlyn Baptist offers free pancake breakfast for kids

Woodlyn Baptist Church, MacDade Blvd., Woodlyn, will host a free  Children’s Pancake Breakfast for children 4 years old through 5th Grade 9-11 am Sat. (Feb. 8). There will be a special visit from Animal Alley Ministries with a live animal presentation including chinchillas, turtles, geckos, prairie dogs, snakes, hedgehogs and more.

Free New Choices Program Accepting Applications

Delaware County Community College’s New Choices program can help are residents gain the knowledge and skills needed to find or upgrade a job and become self-supporting.  New Choices is a free career exploration and job re-entry program that provides individual and group support, career-planning workshops, employer contacts, networking opportunities, résumé writing, interviewing techniques and basic computer skills.
Applications are now being accepted for the evening session beginning March 4 at the Marple campus, 901 South Media Line Road.  Interested individuals are invited to call 610-359-5232 for more information.

Author to Talk About New Book at Swarthmore Library

Swarthmore Library will present an author talk from Rachel Pastan on her new book, Alena, 3p.m., Saturday (Feb. 8) at the library, 121 Park Ave.
Pastan, a graduate of Harvard and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, teaches fiction writing at Swarthmore College.  Copies of Alena will be available for purchase and signing.
In an inspired restaging of Daphne du Maurier’s classic Rebecca, a young curator finds herself haunted by the legacy of her predecessor. At the Venice Biennale, an assistant curator from the Midwest meets Bernard Augustin, the wealthy, enigmatic founder of the Nauk, a cutting-edge art museum on Cape Cod. It’s been two years since the tragic death of the Nauk’s chief curator, Augustin’s childhood friend and muse, Alena. When Augustin offers the position to our heroine, she dives at the chance, and quickly finds herself out of her depth.
Pastan has also written This Side of Married and Lady of the Snakes.  She lives in Swarthmore.

'Protecting Our Water Resources" free lecture at Penn State

Chester-Ridley-Crum Watersheds Association (CRC), Penn State-Brandywine, and CRC’s municipal stormwater partnership will hold their annual joint lecture on Sunday, Feb. 23 at Penn State-Brandywine. “Protecting Our Water Resources and Environment through Reduced Chemical Use” will be presented by Integrated Pest Management (IPM) expert Mike Leventry at 2 p.m. in the campus’s Tomezsko Building Auditorium, 25 Yearsley Mill Road, Media.The program is free and open to the public but advance registration is recommended due to limited space.
            Leventry has a B.S. from the University of Delaware with a concentration in IPM and has 10 years’ experience in the IPM field at the University, Longwood Gardens, and currently as Plant Healthcare Coordinator with the Preservation Tree Company.  His talk will cover how homeowners and property managers can reduce pests to tolerable levels with reduced or eliminated use of chemicals through Integrated Pest Management. Topics will include physical controls, cultural practices, conservation of naturally occurring predators, and use of environmentally friendly products and strategies.  Pests to be covered include invasive plants, insects, algae and troublesome mammals.

Free Workshops for Delco Job-Seekers

Delaware County CareerLink is offering several workshops for county job-seekers including the following:
--Ten Steps to a Federal Job: Feb. 12, 11:30 to 3:30p.m. The two -hour free workshop will offer guidance in applying for Federal positions and explain the Ten Steps to A Federal Job as outlined in the book by Kathryn K. Troutman.
--Linked In to Social Networking for Job Seekers 1:30 to 3:30p.m., Feb. 11. The two-hour workshop will offer insights on how the website “Linked In” can help lead to employment and career advancement.  Attendees will have the opportunity to create their own “Linked In” page.
--Civil Service Workshop, 9:30 to 11a.m. This free workshop will include reviewing open test announcements, the application process, how to schedule a test, types of tests, what happens after testing and test-taking advice and reminders.

Penn State invites community to hear free Beatlnes presentatio

Penn State Laureate Kenneth Womack, associate dean for academic affairs and professor of English and integrative arts at Penn State Altoona, will visit Penn State Brandywine on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 11:30 a.m. to present “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The Evolving Artistry of the Beatles.” Students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to join Womack in room 113 of the Main Building, 25 Yearsley Mill Road in Media, for this interactive, multimedia presentation.
  Womack will highlight the Beatles’ growth through numerous audio and film illustrations, starting with the group’s earliest songs to the height of their success with albums such as "Abbey Road." Attendees will learn about the recording, songwriting and musical genius that made the band one of the most popular of all time.
    “In many ways, their sudden and massive popularity can be attributed to their sound, which was not only infectious, but remarkably different from their forebears,” Womack said. “It was fresh, insistent, and, to most ears, very original.”
 Established in 2008, the Penn State Laureate is a position awarded to a full-time faculty member in the humanities or fine arts. During the academic year, the Laureate appears at University and state events in order to bring a higher level of social, cultural, artistic, and human outlook and understanding to various audiences.

Special guest at Delco Science Institute

Delaware County Institute of Science, 11 Veterans Square, Media, will welcome Stephen Tinney, Ph.D., Penn Museum, 8-9 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10.  He will discuss one of the most famous archaeological discoveries from ancient Iraq -- the royal tombs of Ur (from about 2500 BC). These finds included not only large amounts of gold and precious objects, but multiple burials including soldiers and servants. Attendees will learn about King Gilgamesh and the legends and meaning of the death rituals and burials of the time. There is no charge to attend.

FREE Series on using E-Readers, Downloading Audio Books at Library

Haverford Reference Librarian Joyce Platfoot will present a series of demonstrations on how to borrow eBooks and audiobooks using an eReader.  Choose from one of the classes based upon your eReader type.  The following classes all begin at 7 p.m.:
On Monday, Feb. 10, learn how to find and download eBooks using computer-based Adobe Digital Editions to Nooks (and similar devices) that do not use apps.
The last session, on Monday, Feb. 24 , will cover finding and downloading eBooks to Kindles that do not use apps.

Talk on ‘The Red Rose City’ at Dunwoody Village

The public is invited to hear Dr. Stephen Phillips present a program entitled “Petra: The Red Rose City Half as Old as Time” at the Dunwoody Village Auditorium, 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb.13.  Dr. Phillips is the Research Assistant to the Curator-in-Charge of the Egyptian Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum.  This Outreach Lecture Program is sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.  
Dunwoody Village is  at 3500 West Chester Pike, at the intersection with Bryn Mawr Avenue.

Miss America to speak at free STEM Career Night

 Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri will speak at Delaware County Community College’s STEM Career Night on Wednesday, February 12. Davuluri will discuss the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education as well as diversity in the field. The event begins at 5 p.m. in the Academic Building Lobby on the Marple Campus (901 South Media Line Road, Media).
Formerly known as Engineering Career Day, this annual event introduces participants to the exciting field of STEM. The evening kicks off with a keynote speech from Davuluri followed by a panel presentation from current students enrolled in a STEM major. Afterwards, attendees will have the chance to take a souvenir photo with Miss America and get to meet with representatives from local employers, including Boeing, Covanta, PECO, Southco and UPS. Admissions staff from some of the College’s four-year partner schools will also be on hand to offer guidance on how a student can graduate from Delaware County Community College and then transfer into a bachelor’s degree program.
Delaware County Community College offers more than 20 STEM majors, including architectural technology, CNC programming, electronics technology, engineering, machining and more. The College’s commitment to STEM education includes a state-of-the-art STEM Complex, comprised of the Advanced Technology and STEM Centers, that gives students access to the tools and technology they need to succeed. The Complex boasts more than 11 science laboratories and 12 specialized labs for customized education and training.
STEM Career Night is free and open to anyone interested in learning about a career in the field. R.O.T.C. Scholarship Information Night rescheduled due to snowstorm
American Legion Post 926, 3220 Concord Road, Aston, will host an R.O.T.C. Scholarship information session for high school students in any grade, and their parents, 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19. The meeting has been rescheduled to take place in the Post Banquet Room, entrance on the left side of the building.
Featured presenters will be Lt. Col. Matthew F. Ignatovig and (Ret) Major Keith Karbel.  They are associated with the R.O.T.C. programs at Neumann University, Penn State Brandywine, Penn State Abington, Villanova University, West Chester University, and Widener University.  The information they present is pertinent to all R.O.T.C. programs in all colleges and universities.   A question and answer session will follow the presentation.
