Some freebies to celebrate late September and early October

Audra McLaughlin of 'The Voice' will Sing at free My Fest PA event at Rose Tree Park

Young people from five counties will be “empowered” during a youth festival being hosted by the Delaware County Magellan Youth Leaders Inspiring Future Empowerment (MY LIFE) chapter noon to 5p.m., Saturday (Sept. 27) at Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence.
MY LIFE DelCo is joining with MY LIFE chapters from Bucks, Lehigh, Montgomery and Northampton counties to stage MY FEST PA 2014. The mission is to raise awareness about mental health, substance abuse, juvenile justice, foster care-related issues and other challenges facing young people. MY LIFE members say they want to turn “youth voice into youth action.”
The fifth annual MY FEST PA event will feature live music and a performance by “The Voice” Top 5 finalist Audra McLaughlin, games and art activities along with a variety of youth and family-based organizations offering resources and services for young people and their families.
The festival is fun, free and open to all ages in the community.
MY LIFE DelCo is part of the national MY LIFE initiative, launched in Arizona in 2008. MY LIFE DelCo is sponsored by the Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health and Magellan Behavioral Health of Pennsylvania.
The program is an empowering leadership group for youth ages 13 to 23 who have experience with mental health, substance abuse and juvenile justice issues who want to use their experience to help improve systems that serve youth.
In Delaware County, a group of 20 to 30 young people participate in monthly meetings held at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit. The members identify the key issues they want to address. Ashlie King-Bratton is a youth support partner for the High Fidelity Wraparound from Child and Family Focus, which is a program in partnership with MY LIFE that is designed to empower and be a voice to help with the behavioral health and wellness of youth.
“I have been actively going to MY LIFE meetings and MY FEST for three years now,” Ashlie said. “My goal is to give back to the community by being active with our youth since I can relate to their struggles in life. I have my story to tell and I want to always lead by example to help these young children and teens know that there is help out there.”
(MY LIFE DelCo meets the second Tuesday of each month, 5:30 to 7:30p.m., at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit in Morton. The meetings are open to all interested youth and dinner is provided.)
In addition to monthly meetings, the program features national and local workshops, leadership development, presentations, and performances that focus on important challenges affecting youth.
