FREE food boxes available to qualifying seniors (Hurry! Must sign up by Sept. 30)

Philabundance Looking For 575 Delco Seniors To Receive Food Boxes

The USDA-funded Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which provides seniors with monthly food boxes, expansion has made great strides in the Delaware Valley since March . The expansion aims to assist 18,945 more seniors in PA in 2010.
Philabundance is now serving 8,952 seniors a month in the Delaware Valley, up from 3,623 seniors before the expansion. Philabundance still needs 575 more seniors to sign up from Delaware County by Sept. 30 to meet the programs deadlines, in order for the food to remain in Delaware County.
To qualify for the program, participants must be 60 years or older and have an income that is at or below 130 percent of the poverty line. Interested seniors should call 1-800-319-Food (3663) to be directed to a nearby CSFP food box location near them.
Boxes are approximately 30 pounds and contain canned and boxed food including vegetables, fruit, juice, pasta, milk, cereal, canned meat and a non-meat protein. Each box is also accompanied by fresh cheese.
“Signing up 575 new seniors by September 30th is challenging, but Philabundance is working to meet the goal,” said Bill Clark, President and Executive Director of Philabundance. “We are doing aggressive outreach through Delaware County to sign-up seniors and senior centers, so that individuals aged 60-years and over can receive the much needed monthly CSFP food boxes to help them put food on their tables.”

Great Info Peg! Thanks so much. If our own Delaware County residents are interested in donating canned or dry foods, the Stop Senior Citizen Hunger program has collection sites at AME Church in Chester, a location in Springfield and a collection box is set up at State Rep Bryan Lentz's office in Swarthmore. For more info on how to donate canned or dry foods, call 610-543-6300. Let's help our seniors, many of them skip meals as their social security is barely enough to cover monthly bills, there is often not much left to purchase food.
