FREE Workshops For Parents Offered

DCIU Helps Parents Navigate Children’s Education
Free trainings, offered by the Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU) throughout the school year, help parents to better navigate the often challenging roadmap of educating their children with disabilities. The two-hour workshops, held twice a month from September to June, assist parents in moving the education of their special needs child forward and in learning strategies and resources to aid in their child’s learning. Upcoming workshops include:
Thursday, February 17,  5:30-7:30 p.m., at DCIU, 200 Yale Avenue, Morton,  “The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander” presented by Barbara Coloroso, international expert who specializes in parenting, teaching, school discipline and non-violent conflict resolution. It’s the deadliest combination going. Bullies who get what they want from their target, bullied kids who are afraid to tell, bystanders who either watch, participate, or look away, and adults who see the incident as teasing and a normal part of childhood. Discussing her new book, Barbara Coloroso, gives parents, caregivers, educators, and kids the tools to break this cycle of violence.
Thursday, February 24, 6-8 p.m., DCIU, 200 Yale Avenue, Morton, “Strategies for Struggling Readers,” presented by  Linda Barbato, Professional Development Specialist. Is your child struggling with reading assignments? Attend this workshop to learn effective strategies to enhance their comprehension. This workshop will introduce several ways to use these strategies in order to support a child’s interaction and success with all types of reading assignments.
While geared toward parents of special education students, the free trainings are open to all parents of students in Delaware County public and nonpublic schools. Many other topics of importance are covered, including behavior management at home, social skills, bullying, ADHD, inclusive practices (educating special education students within the regular education environment), the Individualized Education Program (IEP), parent rights and resources and transitioning between grades.
