FREE Environmental Fair In Delco

Delaware County environmental fair
It’s getting easier to be green, say organizers of the Delaware County Environmental Fair set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at Strath Haven High School in Wallingford. A robust program of presentations, workshops and activities help veteran environmentalists and green rookies alike learn how to garden and landscape more sustainably, make home improvements that conserve energy and add value, and adopt greener technologies and techniques.
Admission is free and the event has programs for budding environmentalists of all ages.  The keynote speaker is Mike McGrath, host of WHYY-FM’s nationally syndicated radio program “You Bet Your Garden.”  Mike’s topic is “How to Get Your Lawn Off Drugs” – controlling weeds and pests without poisons, and the role of organic gardening in creating sustainable communities.
The Fair presents several opportunities to clean up your own habitat: recycle your old computer equipment between 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; shred personal documents and data between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (limit three boxes per person). Car fans will want to be sure to check out one the ultimate electric car – the Tesla Roadster.  More than 30 exhibitors and vendors will be on hand, including local gardening experts, energy efficiency consultants, home improvement services, and several government agencies.  Kids and adults are invited to check out hands-on workshops and exhibits involving recycling, bicycling, gardening and even sustainable gift-wrapping.  Lunch and refreshments featuring delectable edibles from local farms and bakeries will be available for purchase.
Return exhibitors from the 2010 Fair include Open Sky Solar Energy Systems, the US Environmental Protection Agency, GreenWeaver Landscape Designs, PECO (also a sponsor), Weaver Roofing, and Clean Air Council.
The Earth Care Council of Delaware County and Swarthmore Presbyterian Church (SPC) present the Fair, in association with Swarthmore Friends Meeting, Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, the boroughs of Swarthmore, Rose Valley, and Rutledge, and Nether Providence Township.  SPC has become a national leader in sustainability among houses of worship, with recognition in 2009 and 2010 by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of just four Energy Star congregations nationwide.
