Celebrate The Year Of The Dragon In Downtown Media
The Media Business Authority has announces the 11th annual Chinese New Year Celebration to be held noon, Sunday (Jan. 22) on State Street in Media. All are welcome to experience the energy and culture of a Chinese New Year parade and celebration, as Master Shu Pui Cheung and his Hung Gar Kung Fu Academy of Chinatown in Philadelphia, perform the traditional Lion Dance, complete with elaborate costumes, drums, cymbals, and dancing. The Lion Dance will begin in front of Margaret Kuo’s Media and continue down State Street.
The Lion Dance is a traditional part of Chinese New Year, which is a holiday rich with symbolism. Participating businesses will hang green leafed vegetables (symbolic of prosperity) in front of their shops to attract the Lion dancers who will consume the greenery to summon luck and fortune and chase away evil spirits.
2012 is the Year of the Dragon, known as the free-spirit symbol of the Chinese Zodiac representing power. In Chinese tradition, each year is assigned an animal sign, and people born in that year are believed to possess the qualities symbolized by that animal. The animal signs appear in a 12-year cycle, and the years of the dragon are 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, and 2012.
The MBA and Margaret and Warren Kuo, owners of Margaret Kuo’s Restaurant, are co-sponsors of the annual event.
The parade starts at noon and weaves through the shopping district. During the event, there is restricted driving on State Street. Parking is available in the garage on Olive Street and Baltimore Ave., or on Front Street near the courthouse. This is a free event appropriate for all ages, offering unique photo opportunities as well as opportunities to interact with the dancers.

Ted Nash Jazz Masterclass
Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 4:00 p.m.

Swarthmore College - Lang Concert Hall

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Ted Nash was born in Los Angeles into a musical family – his father Dick Nash and uncle Ted Nash are both well-known jazz and studio musicians. Nash first came to New York at the age of eighteen and soon after released his first album as a leader, Conception (Concord Jazz). During his first three years in New York he became a regular member of the Gerry Mulligan Big Band, the National Jazz Ensemble, and the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, the latter an association that would last for more than ten years.

It was in this fertile environment that Nash began to write his first arrangements. In 1994, Nash was commissioned by the Davos Musik Festival (Switzerland) to compose for a string quartet in a jazz setting. This commission was the inspiration for Nash’s CD Rhyme and Reason, which was voted one of the top five CDs of 1999 by Jazz Times magazine.

One of Nash's most important associations is with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. A recent commission by the JLCO, Portrait in Seven Shades, was recorded by the Orchestra and released in February 2010, followed by a month-long tour. This recording, a first-ever JLCO release devoted to original music by a band member other than Wynton Marsalis, has been credited by Ted Panken in Downbeat magazine as marking a new direction for the Orchestra.

Nash’s CDs have received many awards, including top ten CDs by New York Times, Village Voice, Boston Globe, New York Newsday, The New Yorker, Downbeat, and Jazz Times magazine. Nash has been cited as “rising star” on saxophone for several years in the Downbeat magazine Critics Poll. Nash has also won three SESAC National Performance Activity Awards for the success of the CDs on the radio.
