Free Talk Set On Folklore And Holidays

  Folklorist Darcy Fair, will give a talk, “Lights In the Dark Night: December Holidays In History and Folklore,” 7:30p.m., Monday (Nov. 19) at Lima Estates, 411 North Middletown Road, Media.
  Whether one celebrates Christmas, Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice or Kwanza, many long-standing holiday traditions are rooted in family and community folklore. Attendees will learn about the folk process at work in holiday food traditions, decorations, family gatherings and other activities.
  The talk is free and open to the public.

DCIU Offers Free Workshop For Parents

  A free workshop to help parents better navigate the often challenging roadmap of educating their children will be held  to 8p.m., Thursday (Nov. 29) at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, 200 Yale Ave., Morton. “Parents and Schools Working Together” will be the topic with Nora Connell, DCIU Professional Development Specialist.
  Working collaboratively with a child’s school team is vital to maximizing a child’s success. This session will explore strategies for improving the connection between home and school for students who have special needs. Tools and strategies will be shared to help parents increase collaboration with the educational team.

Schoolhouse Invites  Community To Advent Hymns Program

  “Hymns and Their Stories” will be presentedby Ron and Carol Giles at Schoolhouse Center 10 am December 5. Local residents can learn about Advent Hymns and their history. Hymns and Their Stories is now in its 15th year and has been presented in various forms at over 125 churches and organizations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio.  Ron created Hymns and Their Stories in 1997 out of an interest in history and a Christian commitment to promote the use and understanding of Hymns through congregational singing.
  This is a free program and RSVP is requested.   Schoolhouse is at 600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom.

N.P. Historical Society Presents ‘Baseball's Golden Age’

  Though baseball season is over for this year, it is always fun to remember favorite stars from the past -- Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, and more.
   The Nether Providence Historical Society will show the DVD, "Saluting Baseball's Golden Age," with special comments by Jim Vankoski, former high school teacher and baseball coach, now director of the Mickey Vernon Sports History Museum on Rte. 202 in Chadds Ford.
   The showing is set for 7:30p.m., Wednesday (Nov. 28) at the Helen Kate Furness Library on Providence Road in Wallingford.  The program is free and open to the public.
   Vankoski will also relate stories about Mickey Vernon, a long-time Wallingford resident, and two-time American League batting champion.

FREE Christmas Open House At Library

  Prospect Park Library will host a Christmas Open House 9 am to 2 pm Sat. (Dec. 8). All ages are welcome to come and decorate the library for the holiday season, make a Christmas craft and enjoy a snack.

Sharon Hill Public Library Announces FREE December Events
   Sharon Hill Public Library will hold Pre-School Story Time  10:30 am every Tuesday and Friday in December, along  with an After School Activity Club Tuesday and Thursday at 3 pm
   A special visit from Santa will be held 10 am  Friday (Dec. 14).
   On Thursday nighs at 6 pm, Family Time is scheduled (Dec 6 Crafts, Dec 13 bingo and Dec 20 Holliday Fun).
  An Energy Saving Workshop will be held 5:30 pm Dec. 6. Participants can  learn seven simple steps to keep homes warm and save money. The workshop, for those over 17, will be free, fun and entertaining.
   All events are free and open to the public

Ridley Twp. Residents Invited To Visit Santa
     Local residents can mark their calendars for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Tuesday (Dec. 4) at the Ridley Township Building. Free entertainment, soft pretzels and hot chocolate will be available beginning at 6pm. Stop in and visit with Santa (approximate arrival is 6:30pm). Everyone is welcome.

Schoolhouse Center Looking for  Quilting Students To Enroll In FREE Class

Those in the community who like to help others and want to learn to Quilt, are welcome to attend the free Quilting Class at Schoolhouse Center, 600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom. Taught by Marise Stillman on Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 9-11 am, participants can learn how to make a quilt top. 
  The folks at Schoolhouse hope to get a group together to partner with a local quilting bee to make quilts for the kids at Children’s Hospital.  For information on this and other classes, call Kim or Sayre at (610) 237-8100 or just stop in to register.   Registration  is open to  adults of all ages in the community.

Candlelight Gratitude And Potluck Banquet Set

  Transition Town Media will host a Candlelight Gratitude Event and Potluck Banquet to express the community’s gratitude for the non-profit organizations in the area.
  Resident are invited to the Media Community Center 6p.m., Tuesday (Nov. 27) and enjoy great food, company, and music while learning more about the groups that make Media special.
  Each group will have a few minutes to talk about their mission, accomplishments, goals, and vision for Media. Participants will have a chance to acknowledge the non-profits for all they do for the community and learn how to support them.
  Everyone is welcome; guests should bring something to share for the potluck dinner or contribute a few dollars, but there is no obligation.

Free Family Addiction Education Program Offered

   Each month PRO-ACT (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization–Achieving Community Together) hosts a Family Addiction Education Program to help individuals and family recognize and address an addiction problem in a spouse, parent, child or other loved one.
   Led by trained volunteers who have been in the same situation, the information and support programs begin on the first Tuesday of each month and run for three consecutive Tuesdays, from 7 to 9p.m. at Holcomb Behavioral Health Services in Media. The next sessions are set for Dec. 4, 11 and 18.

Holiday Choir Workshops And Concert Set

 The Interfaith Gospel Choir has scheduled workshops for its annual Christmas Concert. Workshops are set for 7p.m., Dec. 6, 10 ,13, and 14. The Concert will be held 7p.m., Saturday (Dec. 15) at First United Methodist Church, 350 W. State St, Media.

Knights To Distribute Wheelchairs
    The Knights of Columbus Mater Dei Council, Newtown Square, will distribute free wheelchair this fall, on a first come, first served basis. The group has a limited number of wheelchairs in good working condition that will be given to those who need them, including children nuns, seniors and veterans.
  The program is part of the Knights humanitarian projects for which they fundraise all year.
  Those interested in receiving a wheelchair may write to Whee4lchair Project Chairman Jata Ghosh, Knights of Columbus, 2213 Windsor Circle, Broomall, PA 19008 (610-353-0353).
  Also, anyone with a wheelchair in good condition that is not being used is asked to consider donating it.

Narrated Live Nativitiy In Broomall

The Belmont Baptist Church, Sproul and Paxon Hollow roads in Broomall, invites the whole community to the eighth annual presentation of a narrated live nativity to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 on the church lawn. 
The presentation will feature live animals and actors (from the Belmont Church family) in a narration depicting the birth of Jesus with a special emphasis on the reason for His coming.  Many favorite Christmas carols will accompany this presentation.  In addition, immediately following the live nativity there will be a display of many different nativity scenes (about 75) inside of the church.  The event is free. 
Please invite your family and friends to join us for this very special celebration.  The special family Christmas Eve Service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24.
