    Explore the Scott Arboretum's plant collections with Arboretum staff. This tour is designed for gardeners from beginners to experts. The tour will begin at the Scott Arboretum offices and is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be cancelled.   The Scott Arboretum is an educational garden of ideas and suggestions. Covering more than 300 acres of the Swarthmore College Campus and exhibiting over 4,000 different kinds of plants, the Arboretum displays some of the best trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals for use in the Delaware Valley. Established in 1929 as a living memorial to Arthur Hoyt Scott, the Arboretum is open to the public year-round free of charge, from dawn to dusk. Adam Levine of Garden Design magazine described the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College as "the most beautiful campus in America."  Free Concert At Stage One

   The Marple Newtown Community Band will host a free concert 3pm, Sunday(April 14) at Stage One, the Performing Arts Complex of Delaware County, 101 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford. Works to be performed include Robert Jager’s “Esprit de Corps,” Charles Ives’s “Variations on ’America,’” Morton Gould’s “American Salute,” highlights from Independence Day and more.

FREE Spring Concert On April 20

FREE Civil War Presentation At Marple Twp. Library

   "1863: A New Birth of Freedom," a Civil War series, will be presented by Roger Arthur at the Marple Public Library.  April 11th is "Fredericksburg to Chancellorsville," May 2 is "The Vicksburg Campaign" and May 9th is "Gettysburg: Before, During and After."

Dance Club Celebrates 59 Years With FREE Open House

   Club Sashay will celebrate its 59th Anniversary this month with a dinner and dance.
  Club Sashay is the oldest square and round dance club in Delaware County. The purpose of the Federation is to promote modern Western Square and Round Dancing; to inform the general public of the benefits of square and round dancing; and to provide information and education to members and other square and round dancers to enhance their participation. There are over 20 clubs in the PenDel and MidEast Penn districts.
  Those with dancing experience are welcome to join the club, and lessons are available for beginners; the next classes begin in September. The club and classes are open to everyone: singles, couples and families are welcome.
  Club Sashay will hold an Open House 12 to 2p.m., Sunday (April 28) at Covenant United Methodist Church, 212 W. Springfield Road, Springfield.

Mercy Health Offers Free Bone Health Programs
  To educate the community on better bone health, Mercy Health System is holding a series of free events featuring assessments and presentations by orthopedic and rehabilitation specialists.
    Bone health is important at every age and stage of life. Loss of bone strength can lead to osteoporosis — a disorder in which bones become very fragile and more likely to break. By the time we reach age 40, we slowly begin to lose bone mass. There are many things we can do at every age to keep our bones strong and healthy. You're never too old to improve your bone health.
    To educate the community on the steps to take to avoid bone loss over time and prevent arthritis and osteoporosis, Mercy Health System is sponsoring a series of free programs.
   On Saturday, April 13 at 11 a.m., Mercy Philadelphia Hospital will hold Dine with the Docs luncheon entitled, “Destination Bone Health: Arthritis and Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment” with orthopedic surgeon Menachem Meller, MD, physical medicine and rehab specialist Tony Tsai, MD, physical therapist Kelly Duszak, PT and physician assistant Rachel Spoonhower, PA-C. The program is free and includes a complimentary lunch. It will be held in Mercy Philadelphia Hospital’s First Floor Cafeteria, 501 South 54th St., Philadelphia, PA 19143. Parking is free. Amann, DO, interventional radiologist Joel Neuman, MD, physical medicine and rehab specialist Patricia Riley, MD and physical therapist Sandy Abrams from Nazareth Hospital. FREE Concert In Linwood

   Linwood Heights United Methodist Church’s Solid Rock Cafe, will sponsor a free concert on Saturday(April 13). Doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7pm. First Baptist Ogden Hosts Piano Concert
  G. Richard Deal, concert pianist and recording artist will present a piano concert of sacred music 6:30p.m., Sunday (April 14) at the church, 2446 Mill Road, Boothwyn.
  Deal, of Chicago, has performed all over the U.S., Asia and North and South America.
  He is a graduate of the American Conservatory of Music, the Moody Bible Institute where he was a faculty member, and the Sherwood Conservancy of Music.

Church of Christ To Celebrate 40 Years With FREE festivities

  The Church of Christ will celebrate its 40th anniversary in the church, 4th and Tasker Aves., Folsom, April 13 and 14.
  A dinner will be held 5:30 pm APril 13, with entertainment provided by the Ohio Valley University a capppella chorus at 7 pm.
  On Sunday, the chuirch service will be at 11 am, conducted by former minister Cory Collins. Dinner will follow at 12:15 pm.

 Now you can take “PA Books” wherever you go! The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) is offering free audio podcasts of the popular PCN original program on Apple iTunes.
 Each hour-long program is an informal conversation with the author or editor that has penned a book about a Pennsylvania-related topic. While the books have a focus on the Commonwealth, themes like the Battle of Gettysburg; the American Revolution and Industrial Revolution have a high interest beyond the borders of Pennsylvania.

Gateway Church Hosts Free Movie Night

  Gateway Community Church will host a free Movie Night Saturday (April 20) at the church, 708 S. Old Middletown Road, Middletown Township. The featured movie will be “We Bought a Zoo.”
  The PG- rated movie is based on a true story about a single dad who decides his family needs a fresh start, so he and his two children move to the most unlikely of places -- a zoo. With the help of an eclectic staff, and with many misadventures along the way, the family works to return the dilapidated zoo to its former glory.

Poets and Prophets Presents Poet Joyce Meyers
  Poets and Prophets will “return to the scene of the rhyme,” 7p.m., Tuesday (April 16) at the Dew Drop Inn, a multi-generational space open for art exhibits, bridge, conversation, and poetry. Dew Drop Inn is at 7-A S. Chester Road, Swarthmore and is handicapped accessible.
 Joyce Meyers will present the  first Featured Reading, followed by an open reading.  Meyers taught English at the high school and college levels, then practiced law in Philadelphia for nearly three decades, specializing in First Amendment law. Her poems have appeared in “The Comstock Review,” “Atlanta Review,” and “The Great American Poetry Show, among others.
  She received publication prizes in Atlanta Review’s International Poetry Contest in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and was awarded second prize in The Ledge 2011 poetry competition.
  She has two chapbooks, “Wild Mushrooms” (Plan B Press, 2007) and “Shapes of Love” (Finishing Line Press, 2010).
  The event is FREE.

‘CARDIOVASCULAR DAY’


   Ridley Park, PA — Taylor Hospital, which is a member of the Crozer-Keystone Health System, is dedicated to reducing heart disease, vascular disease and stroke in the community we serve. That’s why we are proud to offer a comprehensive “Cardiovascular Day” on Wednesday, April 17, from 8:30-11:30 a.m., in Classrooms A, B & C of the hospital.
The event will offer free glucose/cholesterol screenings from 8:30-10:30 a.m. (fasting is required; nothing to eat or drink after midnight). Newtown Square Historical Society To Present FREE Speaker On Revolutionary War
  
The Newtown Square Historical Society will present noted local Speaker and Historian Nancy V. Webster as their April 17th speaker at 8 pm in the Dunwoody Village Auditorium, 3500 West Chester Pike,Edgmont.  An independent scholar, Webster will be lecturing on how civilian life in Newtown Square was directly affected during the period of the Revolutionary War.  Nancy Webster is the Curator of the Friends Historical Association based at Haverford College, and is an Honorary Curator of the Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College.  She is a well known for her thrilling lectures throughout Delaware County.   Everyone is welcome to this FREE presentation.

All about Herbs At Brookhaven Municipal Bldg.
   Senior Community Services’ Center for Life Long Learning will offer a free workshop, “All about Herbs,” 2:30p.m., Tuesday (April 16).
  Herbs are some of the easiest plants to grow. The workshop will demonstrate different uses for herbs from drying them to making sauces and dips. The program by Greener Partners at Hillside Farm will provide monthly classes at the Brookhaven Municipal Building, 2 Cambridge Road.

DCCC To Present FREE Speaker Series
  Delaware County Community College’s STEM Speaker Series concludes the semester with a lecture by Dr. Allison Kolpas on “Mathematical Biology: Modeling the Motion of Individuals and Populations.”  The lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, from 11:10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 5 to 5:50 p.m. in the STEM Center, Room 1403 (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA). Both lectures are free and open to the public.
   Mathematical biology is an interdisciplinary field of research involving the development of mathematical models to analyze biological systems. In this lecture, Kolpas will give a brief survey of her research in the area of population dynamics. She will show how mathematical modeling, simulation, and data analysis can be used to characterize collective motion in animal groups, the demography of drifting invertebrate populations in streams, and the turning capabilities of manta rays in the open ocean.
Kolpas is currently an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at West Chester University. She’s published articles on her research in a number of publications, including the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, Applied Mathematics Letters and Mathematical Biosciences. She holds both a master’s degree and doctorate in Mathematics from the University of California at Santa Barbara
   The STEM Speaker Series features lectures on a range of topics covering the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Lectures are offered in the fall and spring semesters and are open to students, faculty and community members.

Marple Public Library is having an Anti-Bullying Night! Parents and kids in grades 6through 12 are welcome to  for a viewing of the documentary film "Bully"  6-8 pm April 18. After the film, everyone will have a discussion of the movie, along with other aspects of this topic. Everyone is welcome.
