Welcome in March with loads of FREE activities and opportunities

Members of the community are invited to attend a free seminar on internet safety, sponsored by the Community Outreach Committee of the Delaware County Bar Association, 7 pm March 11 at Ridley Middle School Auditorium, Free and Dupont Sts., Ridley Park.
The program will focus on these topics: Social Media, Bullying, Internet Safety and Case Studies. Attendees can learn what parents, schools and law enforcement agencies can do to protect children on line.  Taking an active role in a child’s Internet activities will help ensure that they benefit from the wealth of valuable information it offers without being exposed to any potential dangers.  The seminar format will include short presentations and an invitation for questions from the audience.
The presentation will be led by attorney Michael Galantino, a Deputy District Attorney and Chief of the Special Victims / Domestic Violence Division for the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office in Pennsylvania.  He received a B.A. in Social Work from West Chester University in 1983, and his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 1990.  He began his career in the District Attorney’s Office in 1989 and was promoted to the criminal trial division in 1991, where he prosecuted a variety of cases over the next seven years.
In 1998, Galantino was appointed Chief of the newly created Special Victims’ Unit to specialize in cases involving Child Abuse, Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence and Internet Crimes Against Children.  He has prosecuted thousands of cases in his career, including more than 130 jury trials to verdict.  He has taught at the National, State and local levels on issues including computer-facilitated sexual assault, child abuse and exploitation, ethics, evidence, criminal law, search and seizure and courtroom procedures.
Everyone in the community is welcome to attend.

“Hold These Truths’ was inspired by a true story. During World War II in Seattle, University of Washington student Gordon Hirabayashi agonizes over U. S. government orders to forcibly remove and mass incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast.  As he struggles to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the U. S. Constitution, Gordon journeys toward a greater understanding of America’s triumphs and a confrontation with its failures.

“Living for 32” is the powerful portrait of Colin Goddard, who was shot and wounded while attending a class at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007.   Goddard played a unique role in the horrific drama that day—he was the only person in the building to call the police.  The film is a riveting account of the terror he and his classmates endured and the courageous journey of renewal and hope he chose to pursue in the aftermath of the shooting.
Goddard will introduce the film that tells his story and sheds light on the problem of easy access to guns in American society.  He will remain afterward so that audience members can dialogue with him about his experience, the film, the issue, and how people can join together in the growing movement to effect change.
The free film screening and discussion is being sponsored by Delaware County United for Sensible Gun Policy, a grassroots group working for universal background checks on the sales of all guns and for other common sense gun policies.
