FREE History Series Offered To Public

Local History Lecture Series At Swarthmore Library
The Swarthmore Public Library and the Swarthmore Historical Society are co-sponsoring a three-part lecture series, “Swarthmore Stories: An Exploration of Local History.”  The series is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities’ We the People initiative on American history. Programs begin at 7p.m. each Thursday at the library.
The first session will be “The Victorian Era and Influence in Swarthmore,” Oct. 21. Local historian Nancy Webster will present a discussion of the historical and cultural themes of the Victorian Era and how the themes are reflected in Swarthmore’s local history.
“Historically Black Communities in Swarthmore and Beyond,” is set for October 28 when Swarthmore College Associate Professor Allison Dorsey explores the history of the Black Community in Swarthmore against the backdrop of Black communities in the United States.  She will talk about segregation, employment and political engagement to foster a conversation about how Black Swarthmore is both unique and very much like other Black communities in America.
“The Underground Railroad: An Examination of the Liberty Line and the Involvement of Some Swarthmore Residents in the Network to Freedom” will be held Nov. 18. Attendees will learn about the Underground Railroad in southeastern Pennsylvania; hear stories about the involvement of area residents Graceanna Lewis, Edward Magill, Elizabeth Powell Bond and Edward Parrish in assisting freedom seekers. The role of the African American community and churches in building a free society. Christopher Densmore, curator of the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College, will discuss important Swarthmoreans and their role in the Underground Railroad.
All programs are free and open to the public.  Registration is required; register at the library: call 610-543-0436, email swarthmore@delcolibraries.org or use the Eventkeeper link at www. delcolibraries.org.
