Arsenic and Tight Lace at Ridley Township Public Library
On Tuesday, October 11th at 6 pm, Barbara Meyer Darlin will present an entertaining living history program revealing a Victorian lady’s fashions and private life – right down to her chemise. From the "unmentionables" to the kid gloves, Barbara will demonstrate the arduous task of dressing up for a turn-of-the-century formal ball. Ms. Darlin models a dressing sacque, all the undergarments and "figure modifiers," ball gown, cloak, and accessories. Audience members volunteer to be her ladies maid, and help with the laces and hooks. Victorian beauty secrets – including how to get that hour-glass figure without diet or exercise – will be also revealed.  Topics to be presented include care of the complexion, hairstyles and care, how the ideal body shape was achieved, the controversy over tightly laced corsets, and the use of make-up. To register for this free program, call 610-583-0593, or email reference@ridleylibrary.org. Program expenses are funded by the Friends of the Ridley Township Public Library.
