The Spring Freebies Continue...

   In observance of Better Speech and Hearing Month, the hospitals of Crozer-Keystone Health System will offer free hearing screenings to the community. The screenings are designed to identify hearing problems in those who have not already been diagnosed with a deficiency and who do not already wear a hearing aid.
  Events are scheduled as follows:
  --May 2 from 9a.m. to 4p.m., Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Audiology Dept. (Ground Floor).
  --May 7 from 9a.m. to 4p.m., Springfield Hospital, Audiology Dept. (Ground Floor).
  --May 15 from 9a.m.to 3:30p.m., Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Audiology Dept. (Ground Floor).
  --May 22 from 9a.m. to 4p.m., Taylor Hospital, Audiology Dept. (Fourth Floor).

   State Rep. Joe Hackett will host a Shredding Event 9am-12noon  Sat. (May 4) at the Brookhaven Borough Building, 2 Cambridge Road.
  Everyone in the community is welcome to stop by and watch as their documents get shredded, safely and securely. The event is free.

    Area residents interested in pursuing careers in the healthcare industry can find out where to obtain training at a free workshop 9:30 to 11a.m., Thursday (April 25) at PA CareerLink, 701 Crosby St., Suite B, Chester, sponsored by the Delaware County Workforce Investment Board.

   Area residents age 50 and older can hit the dance floor at the Redwood Playhouse Community Center for a free Oldies Night 7 to 9:30p.m.,  Thursday (April 18). The Peter Thomas Band will perform and there will be Line Dancing with Bootscooter.
  Redwood also offers fitness programs Wednesdays and Fridays, ballroom dancing with live bands every Tuesday, Line dancing every Monday and Friday afternoons, and Country Line dancing every Wednesday evening.
  All events at the Redwood Playhouse are free to Delaware County residents and are sponsored by Delaware County Council and the Parks and Recreation Department.

   The Newtown Square Historical Society will host noted local historian Nancy V. Webster, speaking on “Newtown Square During the Revolutionary War,” 8p.m., Wednesday (April 17) at the Dunwoody Village auditorium, 3500 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square.
   An independent scholar, Webster will talk about how civilian life in Newtown Square was directly affected during the Revolutionary War.
  Webster is the curator of the Friends Historical Association based at Haverford College, and is an Honorary Curator of the Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College.

Prendergast High School is proud to sponsor a recycling collection event on April 27, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on their premises located at 401-403 N. Lansdowne Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA. Fill up your car and our trained staff will unload it while you stay in the comfort of your vehicle!
  This special e-waste recycling collection event is intended for items that are typically purchased during the year like toys, computers, laptops, televisions, cell phones, mobile devices and much more. “Anything with a Plug™” will be accepted and recycled…except large appliances, smoke detectors, and rear-projection TVs.
  All materials collected will be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner and for your security, ALL media data that are collected are destroyed. This FREE service is provided by Msgr. Bonner & Abp.    The Aston Public Library will host "planting" story time programs 10:30a.m., Tuesday and Thursday, April 30 and May 2. Children will plant flowers in a special garden that the Library keeps just for kids. Storyteller Ms. Joanne will read the book, Up, Down and Around by Katherine Ayres. This story time is for children aged 2 to 6 accompanied by an adult. Go to www.tinyurl.com/astonkidsevents to register.   Philly settings were important parts of many movies, such as Rocky, Nasty Habits and The King of Marvin Gardens. On Wednesday, May 1st at 6 pm, Irv Slifkin, author of Filmadelphia, will visit Ridley Township Library to show clips from movies with ties to Philly and its suburbs, and talk about the city’s cinema history and key players past and present. Mr. Slifkin, also known as “Movie Irv,” has contributed articles on film and video to many publications, such as Entertainment Weekly, and is a writer and editor for the Movies Unlimited website.    The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has approved changing the way alcoholic beverages are distributed. The Senate will vote on this bill within the next few weeks. There has been a great deal of media attention surrounding this issue.
  The Delaware County Chamber and panelists made up of industry specific individuals impacted by the changes will discuss the issue 8 to 10a.m., Tuesday (April 23) at the Chamber Office, Baltimore Pike, Springfield. Panelists will include a senior executive from Total Wine; a representative from the PA Office of Budget; and others.
  Each of the representatives will give a short presentation. After the presentations, there will be a time for questions and answers. To register for the event log onto www.delcochamber.org.

  The Springfield Historical Society will present a free digital slide program, "History Lives at Fort Mifflin," at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23 at the Springfield Township Building, 50 Powell Road in Springfield.
  Beth Beatty, executive director at Fort Mifflin on the Delaware, will depict the history of one of the longest serving military installations in the country.  It was the site of the greatest bombardment of the American Revolution, a “veteran” of the war of 1812, the Civil War and World War I and II.  The fort went on to serve the United States until decommissioning in 1954.  Refreshments will be served following the program.

    A FREE Shredding event will be held during the library's Book and Bake sale to benefit the Friends of the Ridley Park Library will be held 11 am to 1 pm Sat. (May 4) at the Ridley Park Borough Hall.
People can watch their personal papers being shredded.
  The Borough Hall is at 105 E. Ward Street across from the Fire House. Ridley Park Library is a member of the Delaware County Library System.

    Area residents can celebrate the 2013 PA One Book: Every Young Child selection, The Bus for Us, by Suzanne Bloom with two special events at the Media-Upper Providence Library.
  On Tuesday, April 23, at noon, visitors can bring lunch to the library, listen to books all about transportation and participate in related activities and crafts.
  The following week, at noon, Tuesday, April 30, everyone will meet at the Media Firehouse, across from the library, where everyone will learn about firefighting and take a tour of the firehouse and trucks.

    In this recent report to Middletown Council, Township Manager Bruce Clark noted another Take-Back Day for unused and expired medication is set for 10a.m. to 2p.m. Saturday (April 27) at the PA State Police barracks on West Baltimore Pike, opposite Granite Farms Estates. The national program encourages people to dispose of unused or unwanted prescription and over-the-county medications and drugs in the proper manner.
  Clark announced there also will be an electronics recycling collection the same day in the township building parking lot on North Pennell Road, next to the library. Small electronics, computers, cameras and the like will be accepted.

  The Middletown Library will host a free and informative series for caregivers and adult children concerned about their elderly loved ones.
  The Caregiver Series will be held 2p.m. in the Middletown Library Community Room. Dates and topics include the following: Sunday, May 19 -- Avoiding caregiver burnout, resentment and guilt; and Sunday, June 9 -- There will be a Community Senior and Caregiver EXPO with representatives from numerous fields available to answer questions.
