County Hosts FREE St. Patty’s Dance at Redwood Playhouse

Area residents age 50 years and older can hit the dance floor at the Redwood Community Playhouse Center for a St. Patty’s Dance Party 7 to 9:30p.m., Thursday (March 13) with a live band and Al Santoro performing and line dancing with Bootscooter.
There will be dancing to ballroom, Irish and line dance music, along with snacks.
Redwood also offers fitness programs Wednesday and Friday afternoons, line dancing Monday and Friday afternoons and Country Line Dancing on Wednesday evenings.
All events at the Redwood Playhouse are free to Delaware County residents and are sponsored by Delaware County Council and the Parks and Recreation Department.

FREE Canonization Series Slated at Immaculata; Popes John XXIII and John Paul II to be Declared Saints April 27

Immaculata University’s Campus Ministry is offering a series of presentations to celebrate the Canonization of two Catholic Popes.  Pope John XXIII, who was Pope from 1958 to 1963, and Pope John Paul II, who was Pope from 1978 to 2005, the second longest-serving Pope in history, will be declared Saints on April 27, in Rome.
The presentation series, “Two Popes, One Canonization: Celebrating the Lives of Saints John XXIII and John Paul II,” will be held 7:15 to 8:30p.m. in Loyola Hall 127 on four consecutive Tuesdays as follows:
March 18 -- Pope John XXIII: The Saint of the Second Vatican Council. Father Dennis Billy, C.Ss.R., holder of the John Cardinal Krol chair of Moral Theology at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, will discuss the life and influence of Saint John XXIII.
March 25 -- Pope John Paul II: The Mystery of the Gift. Jim Rogers, MS, ATC, director of special projects for the Temple University Sports Medicine Center, will offer reflections on “Gift and Mystery of the Body” in light of medical science and Saint John Paul II’s teachings.
April 1 -- Pope John Paul II (Part I of three-hour TV movie). In this epic TV mini-series from 2005, Jon Voight delivers an Emmy-nominated inspirational portrayal of the life and spiritual journey of Pope John Paul II.
April 8 -- Pope John Paul II (Part II of three-hour TV movie) Continuation of the 2005 TV mini-series chronicling the life of Pope John Paul II.
 “This series highlights and celebrates these two extraordinary men who changed world history,” said Father Christopher Rogers, chaplain and director of Campus Ministry at Immaculata University.

‘Lazaretto Quarantine Station’ speaker to present free lecture

Springfield Historical Society will sponsor a free lecture and slide program on the Lazaretto 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at the Springfield Township Building, 50 Powell Road.
   Bill Moller, of the Tinicum Township Historical Society, will depict the history of the oldest surviving quarantine facility in the Western Hemisphere.  Opened in 1801, on Big Tinicum Island, the Lazaretto quarantine station and hospital was were all ships, immigrating passengers and cargo were inspected for disease prior to entering the Port of Philadelphia, until its closing in 1895.
  Refreshments will be served following the program. Everyone is welcome.

Free storyteller program at Lansdowne Library

 The Lansdowne Public Library will welcome Master Storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston on Thursday, March 13 at 10:30 am.
The program is geared towards children 3-6 but all ages are welcome!

Music with Miss Jill at the Media-UP Library

Miss Jill will visit the Media-Upper Providence Library 11a.m., Tuesday (March 18) for an interactive sing-along. The program is for ages 2 through 6; registration is required.

Lenten Journey: Forgiveness and Reconciliation featured in FREE Series

St. John Chrysostom Church is offering “A Lenten journey of Forgiveness and Reconciliation,” 7p.m. on three consecutive Wednesdays in the lower church hall.
Presenter is Sister Cathy Nerney, SSJ, PH.D, professor, retreat master, and Director of Chestnut Hill College’s Institute for Forgiveness and Reconciliation.
The topics are: March 26 -- The Gift to Know Ourselves and Repent; April   2 -- The Gift to Know the Other and Forgive; April   9 -- The Gift to know the Giver of the Gifts.

Celebrate black authors and artists at Delaware County History Museum

The Delaware County Historical Society’s  annual “Black History Exhibit “ features local book authors Jack Lemon and Dr. Noble L. Thompson Jr., a tribute to the late artist William Dandridge Jr., and  black history collections and art from Delaware County.
The book, “Black Gold: The African American Athlete at Media High School (1915-1966)”   was written by Lemon, a star athlete  and captain of Media High School’s football, basketball, track and field teams. He graduated from Media HS in 1964. As a proud and distinguished resident of Media, Lemon has written a book about his experiences and memories.
“Never Give Up: My Struggle to become a Doctor”   written by Dr. Thompson Jr. is a true story of his life in pre-civil rights era of Chester and his journey and struggles to become a successful neuro-radiologist. This book encourages others to embrace their diversity and to never accept defeat.
The exhibit also displays artifacts, art work and photos loaned from the Buffalo Soldiers, The Yes Center (formerly the Yes I Can Center), painter Fred West Sr., sculptor Courtlandt Craig, the Nia Center and collections from the Delaware County Historical Society.
William Dandridge Jr., a self-taught artist recognized by his Chester High School teachers and Moore College of Art was a prolific painter who sponsored after school programs and encouraged children to develop their talents. He taught art to disadvantaged children and was gifted an art center where he showed his own work and that of his students. William Dandridge Jr. leaves a legacy of commitment to non-violence, self-development and cultural artists in the community.
This exhibit is on display at the Delaware County Historical Society’s Museum of History and Research Library, 408 Avenue of the States in Chester from now until May. A book signing will be held Sunday April 6, from 2-5 pm and is free to the public. For further information, call 610-872-0502.

FREE college financing info night at DCCC

 Financing a college education may seem daunting and overwhelming, but Delaware County Community College is here to help students and their families with the process. Learn more at the College’s Paying for College Information Night   6 p.m.  Tues. ( March 11) in the Academic Building on the Marple Campus (901 South Media Line Road, Media, PA).
 College-bound students and their families are invited to attend to learn about available financial aid options and the guidelines for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial Aid and Admissions representatives from the College will be on hand to answer questions and offer guidance on the process.
 Participants can also learn about important timelines and dates, the importance of the FAFSA, mistakes to avoid and tips for making the financial aid filing process easier. Scholarships, loans and grants will be discussed as well.

Lenten Series Begins at Christ UMC; Free Community dinners each month

Christ United Methodist Church, 600 E. Duttons Mill Rd., Brookhaven will host a six-week Lenten series on Adam Hamilton’s “24 Hours that Changed the World. The series will be held 6:30 to 7:30p.m., on Tuesdays, March 11 through April 15.
Sunday services are as follows: 9:45a.m., fellowship in the gathering area before the worship service, with coffee and breakfast treats provided in the café.
Worship Service and Sunday School is at 10a.m. with Holy Communion the first Sunday of each month.   Nursery services are provided. Fellowship time follows the worship service in the fellowship center and the café at 11a.m.
  Free community dinners are held 5:30 to 7p.m., the fourth Wednesday of the month with childcare and homework help available.  The next dinner is set for March 26.

Pastor Bang to lead services at Swarthmore UM Church Sunday, with FREE coffee after

 Swarthmore United Methodist Church, 131 Park Ave., Swarthmore will continue its  Faith and Life Class this Sunday, March 2, at 9 a.m. with Pastor Sukja Bang leading the discussion. Afterwards, Rev. Bang will lead the congregation in worship (Children's Sunday School begins at 10:45 a.m.).
  Following the service there will be coffee and fellowship. The church is a welcoming, reconciling congregation and is handicapped accessible.

Tax Prep at Aston Library March 17

The Aston Public Library will host free Federal and State Income Tax preparation services from PathwaysPA throughout the day, Monday, March 17. Families or single persons with income below $51,000 per year are eligible for the free filing assistance.
What's offered includes the following: certified tax preparers to maximize refunds; free e-filing of federal and state returns; fast refunds through direct deposit to bank or prepaid debit card accounts; and U.S. Savings Bonds can be purchased by checking a box on the tax form.

FREE Ridley Lenten series continues at St. Gabriel

The Ridley Area Catholic Churches will continue with their weekly Lenten series entitled “The Fruits of The Holy Spirit.” The third meeting will be presented with the celebration of a Mass 7 pm  Tues. (March 18) at St. Gabriel Church, 233 Mohawk Ave., Norwood.
 The subject of the sermon is “Modesty and Chastity,” presented by Rev. Ronald Check, school minister at St. Hubert High School. A social will follow. All are invited and encouraged to bring a friend.

Scott Arboretum Will host FREE spring celebration

   Scott Arboretum will host a free Spring Celebration, 4 p.m.,  Sunday, March 16 at the Lang Performing Arts Center of Swarthmore College. Charles  Birnhaum, founder and president of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, will teach attendees how to see and value landscapes. FREE play readings at People's Light

A series of free play readings will be presented in partnership between People’s Light & Theatre Co. and numerous local organizations to spark dialogue about community issues.
The play readings in this series include “Hold These Truths” 7 p.m., March 17, “Singing Our Way Through” on May 19 and “New Play Frontiers” on June 9.
“Hold These Truths’ was inspired by a true story. During World War II in Seattle, University of Washington student Gordon Hirabayashi agonizes over U. S. government orders to forcibly remove and mass incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast.  As he struggles to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the U. S. Constitution, Gordon journeys toward a greater understanding of America’s triumphs and a confrontation with its failures.

FREE Opera Program at Marple Library

Opera is returning to the Marple Public Library by popular demand. The series, facilitated by Joseph Erdeljac, a retired music teacher and lifelong opera aficionado, will focus on both the composer and opera. Attendees will listen to recordings while following along with the libretto.
The series, held Wednesdays from 1- 3 p.m., will feature: March 12  “Fidelio” by Beethoven; March 19 and 26 - “Carmen” by Bizet; April 2 and 9 - “Turandot” by Puccini
