FREE Stargazing, FREE Civil War presentation

Stargazing Returns To Widener Observatory
The Widener University Observatory has resumed its FREE public stargazing sessions. All are invited to see the stars, planets and other celestial wonders using the observatory’s 12- and 16-inch computerized reflecting telescopes. Widener astronomy professors, with assistance from undergraduate students, will be on hand to offer assistance.
Upcoming stargazing sessions include Monday twilight viewings 8 to 9p.m., 7 to 8p.m., Oct. 3, 10 and 24. In addition, the observatory will host a Friday evening session 8 to 9p.m., Oct. 7.
The viewings will run throughout the 2011-12 academic year on Monday nights and one Friday night a month.
For a complete schedule and to register, visit www.widener.edu/stargazing or call 610-499-4003. Because space is limited, participants are encouraged to register in advance.
The Widener University Observatory is on the fifth floor of Kirkbride Hall, 17th and Walnut Streets in Chester.

Topic: Civil War Hospitals In Delco
Dr. Joseph Edgette, Ph.D., will present an illustrated slide-show, “Civil War Hospitals in Delaware County,” to benefit the Chester Historical Preservation Committee.
The lecture will be presented at Hedgerow Theatre, 64 Rose Valley Road, Media, 7p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12.
Many people believe that most of the injured during the Civil War received medical attention on the battlefields. Four major sites were used to treat both Union and Confederate casualties in Delaware County: Crozer Hospital, Lazaretto Quarantine Hospital, Villanova University and Williamson Trade School.
The role played by the Chester Rural Cemetery will also be explained.
