FREE Workshops For Parents Of Special Needs Children

DCIU Helps Parents Navigate Their Children’s Education
Parents of Special Needs Children Can Take Advantage of Free Parent Trainings

Morton, PA – Workshops that help parents to better navigate the often challenging roadmap of educating their children with disabilities are being offered for the 2011-12 school year. Workshops include:
Wednesday, October 12, 2011- 6:00-8:00 P.M.
Drexel Hill Middle School, 3001 State Road, Drexel Hill, PA 19026
Specific Strategies for Teaching Social Skills
Presenter(s): Cathy Osborne, DCIU Professional Development Specialist
Do you see your child with special needs struggling to interact with his/her peers?  Does your child with special needs say he/she has no friends?  This workshop is for YOU!  It will provide families with strategies to teach and reinforce social skill development at home and in the community.  An overview of what educators call the “Hidden Curriculum will be discussed.  The power of directly teaching expected behaviors across all settings will also be an important part of the discussion.  The link between poor social skill development and inappropriate behavior will be addressed.  Opportunities to learn about specific strategies such as social stories, graphic organizers, power cards and problem solving strategies will be provided.

Inclusive Programming for Students with Special Needs
Presenter(s): Cathy Ash, DCIU Professional Development Specialist
Does your child have an IEP?  Is he receiving some or all of his IEP supports in the general education setting? This workshop is designed to provide an overview of best practices for educating students with special needs in inclusive classrooms.  Discussion will focus on helping parents understand how curriculum, instruction and assessment are utilized with students with special needs in the general education setting.
