United Way Launches Born learning Trail: 1700 Books For Children
United Way of Southeast Delaware County gave away 400 books to children recently to promote their Success by Six: Born Learning Trail initiative at Mt. Pleasant Nursery School and Kindergarten in Upper Chichester.
"The timing was perfect for launching this new initiative," says Doreen Storey, Executive Director for United Way of Southeast Delaware County. She continues, "Summer is in full swing and children have plenty of time on their hands to enjoy these books. Each child at Mt. Pleasant received a backpack containing books that they can take home and share with their parents or caregivers."
Storey says Mt. Pleasant is United Way's first award recipient of Success by Six: Born Learning Trail. The initiative, designed as a tool for long-lasting community change, offers outdoor learning games that build pre-literacy skills critical to school readiness and works to ensure all children from birth to age six have positive and enriching  educational experiences. More Born Learning Trail awards are forthcoming with a total of 1,700 books to be given to children. Donations of books were collected during United Way's 2011 Stuff the Bus campaign.
Born Learning is not just another activity targeting children. "The expectation is for parents to read aloud to their children at least one time per week during the summer. To gain this  commitment, we ask parents or caretakers to sign a pledge asserting their role," explains Storey. "The interaction of parents, grandparents or caregivers is essential to promoting learning," she adds.
Research from United Way Worldwide shows that lack of time and knowledge about how best to prepare children for school are often at the center of why low-income children begin kindergarten 1-2 years behind their counterparts. Benefits to a child's weekly reading can help develop their motor skills, language and pre-literacy skills.
