Senior Community Services (SCS) will sponsor a Health and Wellness Fair 10 to 1, Thursday (May 16) at the Brookhaven Municipal Building, 2 Cambridge Road.
The event will provide important health and wellness information for seniors and their families. Free Osteoporosis heel scans, blood pressure screenings, fall and balance screenings, stroke risk assessments, and Medicare 101 information will be offered.
Health providers from various organizations such as Crozer Keystone Health System, Keystone Mercy Health Plan, CKHS Cancer Services, CCMC Asthma Management Program, CKHS Emergency, Burn & Trauma Medical Imaging, Action Potential , CKHS Geriatric Mental Health and many more will be in attendance.

Free Organic Gardening program slated
Senior Community Services’ Center for Life Long Learning will offer a free workshop on “Organic Gardening,” 3p.m., Tuesday (May 14) at the Brookhaven Municipal Building, Cambridge Road (behind Burger King).
Attendees will learn how to grow fruit and vegetables organically, including a healthy soil and preventing pests. The program will be presented by Greener Partners at Hillside Farm who will provide monthly classes at the Brookhaven Municipal Building.

Free talk on Abraham Lincoln at Swarthmore Library
Swarthmore Public Library will present “Abraham Lincoln: a study in the paradox of greatness,” a lecture by Roger Lane, Emeritus Professor of History at Haverford College, 2p.m., Tuesday (May 21).
As we near the 150th anniversary of the nearby battle of Gettysburg, it seems fitting to give consideration to the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln. The presentation explores Lincoln’s claim on posterity, which rests not just on his victory in the Civil War, but also on the unique combination of Lincoln’s personal qualities, his historical context, and the American imagination.
Dr. Lane has been celebrated as one of the “Top Ten Profs” in the metropolitan area by Philadelphia Magazine. He has written several award-winning books, and has appeared in television documentaries dealing with crime, the history of Philadelphia, and the urban African American experience.
He received a PhD from Harvard University.

The Friends of the J. Lewis Crozer Library Art Auction Fundraiser has been rescheduled. The public is invited to this special silent auction hosted by the Friends of the J. Lewis Crozer Library at The Cove Restaurant at Harrah’s Philadelphia, 5-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 4.
The event will help raise funds for the Friends group in support of programming and special projects at the library. Silent auction items will include donated art pieces as well as gorgeous reproductions created by local artists.

Crozer-Keystone Partners with ‘The Power of Pink’ to Offer Free Mammography Screenings for Uninsured/Underinsured Women
Crozer-Keystone Health System, the county’s leading provider of mammography services, will partner with The Power of Pink, Inc., a local non-profit organization, to offer free mammography screenings in May for uninsured and underinsured women.
Screening appointments are available at the following dates, times and locations:
· May 13, 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, 501 N. Lansdowne Ave. in Drexel Hill.
· May 28, 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake, 300 Evergreen Drive in Glen Mills.
· June 3, 3 to 6 p.m. at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, One Medical Center Boulevard in Upland.

Kennel Club hosts program on Labs
The Delaware County Kennel Club invites the public to a free talk about Labrador Retrievers 7:30p.m., Tuesday (May 14) at the Aston Township Meeting Room, 5021 Pennell Rd., back entrance.
The talk will be given by Jen Rhysek and will consist briefly of the history of the breed, discussion of the breed standards and time for questions. She will be assisted by Yellow Labs, "Izzy" and Izzy’s daughter "Maven” who is about six months old. Adding to the evening will be five-month-old puppy "Blitzen."
K-9 Izzy is a therapy dog and holds many titles in agility competitions. Maven is learning to follow in her mother's footsteps.

Nagy has spent over 20 years doing primary research uncovering many secrets about our legendary Generals and founding fathers as part of their battle plan against the British. Remember, the British controlled both New York, Philadelphia, and our surrounding area.
Come and hear how complex spy networks, double agents, and traitors were a major part of what forged our nation. John Nagy's third book, Spies in the Continental Capital: Espionage Across Pennsylvania During the American Revolution, released in 2011, contains information on 130 spies. David McCullough, author of John Adams and 1776 wrote, “John Nagy fellow historian and Revoluationary War Scholar Extraordinaire!”

'CSI: Ancient Egypt, Solving Deaths on the Nile' presented at Ridley Township Public Library
Dr. Stephen Phillips from the University of PA Museum will visit the Ridley Township Public Library, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom, 6:15 pm Wed. (May 15).
Methods and techniques used by anthropologists to evaluate human skeletal remains are applied in modern forensic (criminal) investigations. This lecture will examine skeletal examples from the archaeological research of the presenter. A highlight of the lecture is re-examining a possible 3,300 year old royal murder case using modern CSI forensics.
Dr. Steve, who has presented multiple programs at the library, is the Research Assistant in the office of the Curator-in-Charge of the Egyptian Section of the University Museum. This program is part of the Outreach Lecture Program, funded by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. FREE Admission To Annual Italian American Heritage Festival in Rose Tree Park June 2
Thousands of people are expected to descend upon Rose Tree Park in Media Sunday, June 2, at Rose Tree Park from 11:30 am to 6 pm for the Fourth Annual Italian American Heritage Festival. Admission is free.
The festival will celebrate Italian-American authors, artists, sports figures, automobiles, culture, heritage, food, entertainment and more.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, the Italian Embassy in Washington, and the Consul General of Italy represented in Philadelphia by the On. Consul General Luigi Scotto, have declared 2013 Anno Della Cultura Italiana Negli Stati Uniti (The Year of Italian Culture in the United States). The festival will be a part of this national celebration.
Last June, the festival attracted over 10,000 people from throughout the Delaware Valley and beyond.
Two separate stages of entertainment will include Alfio, the Italian Heart Throb, the Philadelphia Mandolin and Guitar Ensemble, Hot Club of Philly Band, Anthony Caserta and the Boy in Black Band, the De La Salle String Band Orchestra, and others.
Italian authors and artists in attendance will include George Anastasia, Brigida Michopulos, and Ursula Ippoliti. All new this year, the International Opera Theater will provide a special performance featuring selections from the new lyrical opera, Jago, direct from Italy and its premier opening at the Media Theater.

Sign ups open for Science in the Summer
GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer is coming to the Aston Public Library with the theme of “Bioscience.” Science in the Summer is a free science education program that helps elementary school children learn about and enjoy science. The program will be held July 8 through 11 with morning and afternoon options.
Applications are available at the library, 3270 Concord Road. The deadline is May 31. Places will be decided by lottery if there are more kids than spots.
There will be two age groups: those entering grades 2 and 3 (Level I); and those entering grades 4-6 (Level II).

Libraries now have ‘Destination Places’ for older adults
Two Delaware County Libraries have received grants from Commonwealth Libraries to provide places designed specifically for older adults. The new areas are in the Marple Public Library, the Rachel Kohl Community Library, who join the existing space at the Upper Darby/ Sellers Free Public Library.
Each library received money from the Commonwealth Libraries’ Senior Space project to re-configure space within the library to make it a senior destination place. Not only can older adults pick up the latest best seller, current DVD or use the Internet, they now have their own space in which to relax, have a cup of coffee and talk to others, or peruse materials. While not isolated from the rest of the library, each space provides an area for seniors to talk and to attend programs without interruptions or distractions.
Although Commonwealth Libraries refer to these areas as Senior Spaces the libraries here realized that older adults don’t think of themselves as “seniors,” nor do they act like “seniors.” Today’s older adults are active and engaged, so each library gave their space a different name, one that reflects today’s older adult’s attitude.
Marple Public Library named theirs “Great Expectations;” Rachel Kohl Community Library named theirs “Encore,” and the Upper Darby/Sellers calls theirs “Grand Retreat.”
The “Grand Retreat” at the Upper Darby/Sellers Library has been open since 2010. Upper Darby/Sellers Library will kick off Older Americans Month 2013 with a performance by the Sunshine Singers in May. (Call the library for more information at 610-789-4440.)
“Great Expectations” at the Marple Public Library will celebrate its opening 4 to 6p.m., Friday (May 3. “Encore” at the Rachel Kohl Community Library will have its grand opening 1p.m., Thursday (May 30).

Middletown Free Library Sponsors Series for Caregivers
The Middletown Library will host a free and informative series for caregivers and adult children concerned about their elderly loved ones.
The Caregiver Series will be held 2p.m. in the Middletown Library Community Room. Celebrate Community Day in Middletown Saturday
The 19th annual Middletown Township Community Day will be celebrated 11a.m. to 3p.m., rain or shine, Saturday (May 11) at Penn State Brandywine on Rte. 352 in Middletown Township.
Programs listing all of the activities and maps will be available at the information booth. Entertainment will include children’s games with prizes donated by Kohl’s, hay rides and fire truck rides, Moonbounces and musical performances.
Food vendors will include Chik-fil-A, Pappone’s Pizzeria, Da-Shin and Peking Restaurants, Pronto Catering and Mister Softee. In addition, there will be hot dogs, popcorn and free Rita’s water ice.

Kennel Club hosts program on Labs
The Delaware County Kennel Club invites the public to a free talk about Labrador Retrievers 7:30p.m., Tuesday (May 14) at the Aston Township Meeting Room, 5021 Pennell Rd., back entrance.
The talk will be given by Jen Rhysek and will consist briefly of the history of the breed, discussion of the breed standards and time for questions. She will be assisted by Yellow Labs, "Izzy" and Izzy’s daughter "Maven” who is about six months old. Adding to the evening will be five-month-old puppy "Blitzen."
K-9 Izzy is a therapy dog and holds many titles in agility competitions. Maven is learning to follow in her mother's footsteps.

'CSI: Ancient Egypt, Solving Deaths on the Nile' presented at Ridley Township Public Library
Dr. Stephen Phillips from the University of PA Museum will visit the Ridley Township Public Library, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom, 6:15 pm Wed. (May 15).
Methods and techniques used by anthropologists to evaluate human skeletal remains are applied in modern forensic (criminal) investigations. This lecture will examine skeletal examples from the archaeological research of the presenter. A highlight of the lecture is re-examining a possible 3,300 year old royal murder case using modern CSI forensics.
Dr. Steve, who has presented multiple programs at the library, is the Research Assistant in the office of the Curator-in-Charge of the Egyptian Section of the University Museum. This program is part of the Outreach Lecture Program, funded by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. FREE Admission To Annual Italian American Heritage Festival in Rose Tree Park June 2
Thousands of people are expected to descend upon Rose Tree Park in Media Sunday, June 2, at Rose Tree Park from 11:30 am to 6 pm for the Fourth Annual Italian American Heritage Festival. Admission is free.
The festival will celebrate Italian-American authors, artists, sports figures, automobiles, culture, heritage, food, entertainment and more.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, the Italian Embassy in Washington, and the Consul General of Italy represented in Philadelphia by the On. Consul General Luigi Scotto, have declared 2013 Anno Della Cultura Italiana Negli Stati Uniti (The Year of Italian Culture in the United States). The festival will be a part of this national celebration.
Last June, the festival attracted over 10,000 people from throughout the Delaware Valley and beyond.
Two separate stages of entertainment will include Alfio, the Italian Heart Throb, the Philadelphia Mandolin and Guitar Ensemble, Hot Club of Philly Band, Anthony Caserta and the Boy in Black Band, the De La Salle String Band Orchestra, and others.
Italian authors and artists in attendance will include George Anastasia, Brigida Michopulos, and Ursula Ippoliti. All new this year, the International Opera Theater will provide a special performance featuring selections from the new lyrical opera, Jago, direct from Italy and its premier opening at the Media Theater.

Sign ups open for Science in the Summer
GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer is coming to the Aston Public Library with the theme of “Bioscience.” Science in the Summer is a free science education program that helps elementary school children learn about and enjoy science. The program will be held July 8 through 11 with morning and afternoon options.
Applications are available at the library, 3270 Concord Road. The deadline is May 31. Places will be decided by lottery if there are more kids than spots.
There will be two age groups: those entering grades 2 and 3 (Level I); and those entering grades 4-6 (Level II).

Libraries now have ‘Destination Places’ for older adults
Two Delaware County Libraries have received grants from Commonwealth Libraries to provide places designed specifically for older adults. The new areas are in the Marple Public Library, the Rachel Kohl Community Library, who join the existing space at the Upper Darby/ Sellers Free Public Library.
Each library received money from the Commonwealth Libraries’ Senior Space project to re-configure space within the library to make it a senior destination place. Not only can older adults pick up the latest best seller, current DVD or use the Internet, they now have their own space in which to relax, have a cup of coffee and talk to others, or peruse materials. While not isolated from the rest of the library, each space provides an area for seniors to talk and to attend programs without interruptions or distractions.
Although Commonwealth Libraries refer to these areas as Senior Spaces the libraries here realized that older adults don’t think of themselves as “seniors,” nor do they act like “seniors.” Today’s older adults are active and engaged, so each library gave their space a different name, one that reflects today’s older adult’s attitude.
Marple Public Library named theirs “Great Expectations;” Rachel Kohl Community Library named theirs “Encore,” and the Upper Darby/Sellers calls theirs “Grand Retreat.”
The “Grand Retreat” at the Upper Darby/Sellers Library has been open since 2010. Upper Darby/Sellers Library will kick off Older Americans Month 2013 with a performance by the Sunshine Singers in May. (Call the library for more information at 610-789-4440.)
“Great Expectations” at the Marple Public Library will celebrate its opening 4 to 6p.m., Friday (May 3. “Encore” at the Rachel Kohl Community Library will have its grand opening 1p.m., Thursday (May 30).

Middletown Free Library Sponsors Series for Caregivers
The Middletown Library will host a free and informative series for caregivers and adult children concerned about their elderly loved ones.
The Caregiver Series will be held 2p.m. in the Middletown Library Community Room. Celebrate Community Day in Middletown Saturday
The 19th annual Middletown Township Community Day will be celebrated 11a.m. to 3p.m., rain or shine, Saturday (May 11) at Penn State Brandywine on Rte. 352 in Middletown Township.
Programs listing all of the activities and maps will be available at the information booth. Entertainment will include children’s games with prizes donated by Kohl’s, hay rides and fire truck rides, Moonbounces and musical performances.
Food vendors will include Chik-fil-A, Pappone’s Pizzeria, Da-Shin and Peking Restaurants, Pronto Catering and Mister Softee. In addition, there will be hot dogs, popcorn and free Rita’s water ice.
