Council alerts families to FREE vaccination clinics
for students at Delaware County State Health Center in Chester

The Delaware County Department of Intercommunity Health announced that free immunizations are available for all school-age county children April 9-13 at the Delaware County State Health Center in Chester.
The DoH is reminding all parents and caregivers of the upcoming deadline to ensure that school-aged children have all required immunizations.
Councilwoman Colleen Morrone, Council’s liaison to Intercommunity Health, announced information from the state DoH alerting families to register their students by Friday, March 30, through the DoH website at www.padohclinicappt.com. Individuals can also call 877-PA-HEALTH (877-724-3258) for additional information.
The free immunizations for school-age children will be given from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. April 9-13 at the Delaware County State Health Center, 151 W. Fifth Street, Suite 1, Chester.
New immunization regulations that took effect last August require children in all grades to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine as well as a second dose of the chicken pox vaccine.
They also require students in seventh grade to have one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine, and one dose of the tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis vaccine.
In a notice from the state, Dr. Eli Avilla, DoH secretary, said: “When the current school year began, families were given an eight-month provisional period to get their students up-to-date with their vaccinations.
“This period is coming to an end, so we are reminding families to make sure school-aged children are immunized.”
Dr. George Avetian, Delaware County’s senior medical advisor, said immunizations are critical in protecting school-aged children from serious illnesses.
“The state has established the week of April 9th for holding school catch-up vaccination clinics to target students needing vaccine to meet the school requirements for this school term,” Dr. Avetian said. “I recommend that families check the status of their children’s vaccinations and be sure they meet the state’s guidelines.”

Author of Freeing Yourself From Anxiety:
4 Simple Steps to Overcome Worry and Create the Life You Want

Thursday, April 5, 2012
7:30 pm

All of us encounter everyday worries and doubts.  But especially in stressful times, the static that worry creates in our minds really hinders us from thinking clearly about how to make good choices in moving forward in our lives. Dr. Tamar Chansky’s new book: Freeing Yourself from Anxiety: 4 Simple Steps to Overcome Worry and Create the Life You Want has the answers. With a wealth of experience from Dr. Chansky’s previous popular books on anxiety, she tells readers how to change their relationship with worry. Just because worry is our first reaction to uncertainty, doesn't mean it should be our last. Dr. Chansky teaches readers how to hear worry differently and diminish the significance of the message and shorten the detour that worry takes us on in life. Come learn some simple strategies to move worry out, and wisdom in.

Dr Chansky grew up in Swarthmore and graduated with a B.S. in psychology from Swarthmore College, followed by a Masters degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D from Temple University. Dr. Tamar Chansky is a licensed psychologist, the Founder and Director of the Children's and Adult Center for OCD and Anxiety in Plymouth Meeting, PA. Dr. Chansky is also the author of the numerous popular books on overcoming anxiety and negative thinking.Visit Dr. Chansky’s website at www.tamarchansky.com

Easter Canned Goods Hunt Will Benefit Media Food Bank

Forget the colored eggs. Bring on the Easter cans!
For the second year in a row, children at a Media church will hunt for canned goods instead of the traditional eggs for Easter. The church will donate the cans to the Media Food Bank.
Last year, the hunt at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County yielded 408 items for the food bank.
As with last year’s event, the food will be donated by congregation members who contribute edibles and money weekly to the Food Bank (located at the First United Methodist Church of Media).
The cans will be hidden by older youth on Easter morning (April 8), all around the Unitarian Universalist church property. After the 9:15a.m. service, preschoolers through sixth graders will search for the treasures destined for the food bank.
But the children won’t go away empty-handed -- each will receive a "goodie bag" for participating.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County is at 145 W. Rose Tree Rd., two blocks west of Route 252. For more information, go to uucdc.org or call 610-566-4853.
