Dog License And Free Microchip Clinic April 14 At Rose Tree Park
Delaware County dog owners have a unique opportunity to enjoy a walk in the park, while enhancing their dog’s safety by getting a 2012 license and microchip all at the same time.
County dog owners are invited to get their four-legged friend a current state-mandated dog license plus a microchip at a License and Microchip Clinic, 9a.m. to noon, Saturday (April 14) in the Maintenance Building adjacent to the Hunt Club at Rose Tree Park, Route 252 and Rose Tree Road, Upper Providence.
Delaware County Council is partnering with the Delaware County Kennel Club to provide free microchips to any Delaware County dog. A small electronic chip, approximately the size of a grain of rice, will be implanted in the dog and scanned on site to ensure it is functioning properly.
Ellen Linaweaver, the license coordinator for the Delaware County Treasurer’s Office, will process dog license applications at the event. A dog with a microchip is eligible for a lifetime dog license for a fee of $31.45 if the dog is neutered and $51.45 for others. Annual dog licenses, which need to be renewed every year, are $6.45.
“We all value our pets and it is heartbreaking if they get lost,” said Council Vice Chair Mario Civera, Jr., owner of a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. “Having a current license paired with a microchip is the best way to ensure a lost dog is quickly and safely returned to its owner.”
The Kennel Club and Delaware County Parks and Recreation will donate the microchips for the event and representatives from the Kennel Club will be on hand to provide information on dog care.
Members of the Kennel Club will also present a first aid kit to Bruno, a new K-9 dog assigned to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, in a brief ceremony at 10a.m. Bruno is trained in patrol and explosives.
“Peace of mind is priceless to a pet owner,” said Terry Nuss, president of the Delaware County Kennel Club. “The animal cannot speak, but the tag is their voice. Dog licenses and microchips are a pet’s phone call home.”
When a lost dog has a microchip, people who find the dog can have the chip read by a local veterinarian or humane officer to locate the owner.
If a lost dog has a current license, anyone who finds the dog can get the owner’s phone number through the County’s Return a Lost Dog feature on the county website at http://www.co.delaware.pa.us/. By entering the license number, the user can access the owner’s contact information.
To protect owners and their pets, dogs must be on a leash while attending the event. Microchips will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
