Deshong Park Commemoration Day Saturday in Chester

Hedgerow Theatre will participate in the Deshong Park Commemoration Day, Saturday, Sept. 28 in Chester. The festival, which will be held from 10a.m. to 5p.m., is the launch event for an arts initiative to create a Cultural Corridor from Widener University to Chester’s City Hall.
Hedgerow Producing Artistic Director Penelope Reed has written a theater piece, “Dream -- We Can Make It Happen,” based on stories collected from city residents and research into Chester’s history. The piece will be performed by Hedgerow and Chester actors twice during the festivities.
“Over the years, Hedgerow has enjoyed a rich relationship with various schools in Chester, The Delaware County and City of Chester Historic Societies, and the Nia Center, Boys and Girls Club of Chester and Chester Arts Alive,” said Reed. These organizations are central to this endeavor, and because of the Vision 2020 - Beautiful City Movement  for Chester’s potential to grow as a regional cultural  resource, we have combined our imaginations and  energies around making this event a tremendous success.”
Chester is one of six cities included in the federally supported Strong Cities, Strong Communities initiative designed to encourage economic stabilization and recovery.
“This stimulus has moved this from a grassroots effort to city and county-wide participation,” Reed said. “The Industrial Development Association has embraced this new impetus, which will allow citizens of Chester to enjoy the historic DeShong Park in the summer months. The fact that this is a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Alfred O. Deshong's bequest of his properties to the people of Chester has ignited many to join forces to make this happen.”
The day’s schedule is as follows:
10:30a.m. -- Hedgerow presents “Dream -- We Can Make It Happen” at Chester City Hall.
11a.m. -- renowned historian Nancy Webster will speak about Chester's rich history and the force of Alfred O. Deshong.
11:30a.m.  to 12:15p.m. -- Historical characters will walk to the YWCA for a presentation, “Deshong Era - Then and Now.”
12:30 to 1p.m. -- Unity Walk with drummers, dancers and stilt walkers will lead supporters from City Hall side of the corridor as Widener representatives and students walk from the University, both meeting at Deshong.
1p.m. -- Festivities begin, including entertainment, crafts, music, poetry and vendors.
2 p.m. -- Mayor John Linder will address attendees, and Hedgerow will present an encore of the play.
From  2:30 to 5p.m. the celebrations will continue.

September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month; FREE awareness training offered to Delaware County professionals

MEDIA, PA — September is known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Month.  Through funding and support from the Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health, Department of Drug and Alcohol Services, Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems is committed to educating the Delaware County community on the harmful effects of drug and alcohol use during pregnancy.  Prenatal exposure to alcohol can cause birth defects, growth deficiencies, intellectual disabilities, behavioral issues, and social disorders.  Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are 100% preventable if a pregnant woman abstains from all alcohol use during pregnancy.
Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is also a concern for pregnant mothers. NAS can occur in a newborn who was exposed to addictive illegal or prescription drugs such as: Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Cocaine, or Opiates/Narcotics while in the mother’s womb. These drugs pass through the placenta, the organ that connects the baby to its mother in the womb, to the baby during pregnancy. Once the baby is born, it is no longer getting the drug; therefore, symptoms of withdrawal may occur.
Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems is hosting a FASD/ NAS awareness training for professionals at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit on Friday, September 27, 2013 from 9am to 12pm.  This training is FREE for Delaware County Professionals, thanks to funding from the Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health, Division of Drug & Alcohol Services. The cost for out of county professionals is $25.00. For more information about this training, please contact Kaila Smeach at 484-444-0412 or visit our website at www.holcombprevention.org.

Hackett to Host Family Expo on Sept. 21- and it's all free!!!

In an effort to provide families with the latest information on services and programs available through local, county and state agencies, Rep. Joe Hackett (R-Delaware) is hosting a Family Expo Saturday, September 21 in Ridley Township.
This is a non-profit event focused around families and children, providing essential information and education to their everyday lives.
The Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Notre Dame de Lourdes, 950 Fairview Road in Swarthmore (inside Father Nelson Hall/Gymnasium, located directly behind the school).
“This event is geared for the entire family because the children have fun and the parents walk away with a lot of valuable information that is offered to them in Pennsylvania,” said Hackett. “There are so many excellent resources available to us, but we’re not always aware of how to access them. This event will give our families the opportunity to see how those resources can be of value to each one of us.”
The expo is offered as a community service to both educate and entertain. Exhibitors include local and state agencies, businesses, clubs, and a variety of organizations valuable to families.
Independence Blue Cross and the Philadelphia Union will be on hand to promote their “Healthy Futures Initiative” dedicated to fighting childhood obesity and building healthy communities. Kids will have the opportunity to play in a giant inflatable soccer field and meet a team member from the Philadelphia Union, who will be at the Expo from 12-1 p.m.
“We live in an age of electronic entertainment, where physical activity and neighborhood safety have decreased considerably for our region’s children,” said Hackett. “As both a leader and community member, I care about the futures of our students, so having the presence of the IBC Foundation and its partners to ensure those futures are brighter, happier, and healthier is a great honor.”
More than 60 exhibitors will take part in this year’s expo. A full list of exhibitors and event details are available online at RepHackett.com.
