395 Bishop Hollow Road
in
Newtown Square
, the fair also serves as a showcase for 4-H youth to present their completed projects from the past year.  The fair begins on Friday with a horse show at 1:00 p.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 6:00 p.m. and sheep and pig showmanship. Visit the used book sale and silent auction, beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Both activities benefit the Delaware County 4-H Program.  The used book sale offers a variety of children's and adult books, while the silent auction offers a variety of goods and services from local stores and businesses to those interested in bidding.
Saturday's schedule begins at 9:00 a.m. with livestock showing, silent auction, various contests, a small country store, a used book sale, and a live auction which begins at 2 p.m.  Visitors are encouraged to tour the centuries-old barn and meet the resident horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, and cows.  New this year:  Mom’s Bake at Home Pizza will offer freshly baked pizza, sodas and bottled water at family-friendly prices.  Try the breakfast pizza on Saturday morning!  Always a crowd pleaser, delicious ice cream and milkshakes will be available as well.  Additional snacks such as soft pretzels, sno-cones, fruit cups and baked goods will also be for sale.   There’s even something for the dogs in your life:  the 4-H Dog Club will sell home-baked dog biscuits.  All proceeds benefit 4-H club programs in Delaware County.

At 2 p.m. market animals, hand-raised by youth members at the farm, are sold to bidders at the live auction.  Vegetable, poultry, and educational exhibits remain on display throughout the fair. The fair closes at 4:00 p.m. Saturday

FREE Friday Night Film

The Peace Center of Delaware County’s First Friday Free Film Series continues, 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. with a showing of “Hiroshima, Mon Amour” (Hiroshima, My Love). The film has a 90 minute running time and is in French with English subtitles. The unrated, black and white film was directed by Alain Resnais, with screenplay by Marguerite Duras.
“Hiroshima, Mon Amour”  is the classic 1959 love story about loss, forgetfulness, memories of World War II, and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Fifteen years after the atomic bombing of  Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, a film crew arrives in Hiroshima to make a film about peace. The film’s actress meets and has a brief affair with a Japanese man she meets the night before her return to France. The two debate memory and forgetfulness, failed relationships, the meaning of the Hiroshima bombing and, in flashback images, recount their pain and anguished memories of war.
“Hiroshima, Mon Amour” weaves past and present, personal pain and public anguish, memory and facing the history that makes us who we are, into a moody masterwork that is also one of the truly landmark films in cinematic history.

FREE Fun On The Basketball Courts

Williams Hosts Youth Basketball Tournament As Part of N2N Summer of Peace

DARBY, July 20, 2011 — State Sen. Anthony H. Williams’ Neighborhood to Neighborhood 2011 Summer of Peace continues to provide fun, safe and family-friendly events with an upcoming basketball tournament for youth ages 13 and up, who will have an opportunity to match their skills against local police officers.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Darby Recreation Center, located at 10th Street and Ridge Avenue in Darby, Pa.

“This basketball tournament is a great way for our teenagers to meet and compete against the police officers who protect them and ensure their safety. I know teens look at the police as an authority to avoid, but I’m hopeful that this will give both the kids and police a chance to interact, engage is some friendly competition and foster a better sense of respect for one another,” Williams said. “Everyone is welcome to check out the games and enjoy a peaceful summer day with friends and neighbors.”

Those who come to watch the games will be treated to FREE popcorn, cotton candy, soft pretzels, water ice and fruit. There will also be a variety of activities and entertainment, including a DJ, line dancing and on-site constituent services with Sen. Williams’ staff.  Children’s activities include a Moon Bounce, games, face painting, character appearances, clowns, balloon art, water games and an arts and crafts table,

The event is part of Williams’ Neighborhood to Neighborhood 2011 Summer of Peace initiative. He introduced this initiative in lieu of his N2N Street Festival, which was suspended this year after a 20 plus-year run along Baltimore Avenue.

Williams instead opted to re-direct resources that normally went to the festival's operation to community-based efforts that helped promote youth development and curb violence. So far, the initiative has funded some 50 mini-grants, gun buybacks and community cookouts throughout the 8th District.

Artists Exhibit In Swarthmore
An exhibition of acrylic paintings by Martha Perkins and Clair Oaks will be on display through July 31 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Ave.
The exhibit highlights current works by the two artists, who are friends and colleagues and share an interest in blogging in addition to their shared love of acrylic painting.
Perkins is a Swarthmore artist who graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s University with a BA in Fine Arts in 1992. After a nearly 20 year hiatus filled with raising her children and busying herself with home improvement projects to satisfy her need for creative expression, she has reentered the artistic world, beginning with sketches and pastels, and then moving to painting with acrylics. In February 2010, she began a blog called mysketchexperiment.com with the intention of working on a piece of art each day, and the goal of being led in new creative directions by this exercise. The evolution of her art and her style can be followed on her website as she continues to create art, and to encourage others to follow their creative passions.
Oaks is a Swarthmore painter and musician, whose music was featured in the recent movie Eat Pray Love.  Describing herself as "smitten" with painting on canvas with acrylics, she uses the saturated colors and layering processes of the medium to create in the viewer what she calls "a sense of the unrevealed.... within a framework of structured spontaneity."  A practitioner and teacher of yoga and meditation for many years, her paintings are intended to evoke a simultaneous impression of calm and vibrancy.
More information can be found at her creativity blog: http://www.clairoaks.wordpress.com/ and her music website, http://www.clairoaks.com/.
The exhibit is sponsored by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts. For more information, visitwww.swarthmorearts.org or contact exhibit chair Michele Southworth, 610-543-1108 or e-mail msouthworth@verizon.net

FREE Science Saturdays!

Discover the Moon and Tides and Enjoy an Animated Western Comedy
At Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center
Science Saturdays and Matinee Sundays highlight free family
fun each weekend in August

PHILADELPHIA (July 6, 2011) –Have you ever wondered what makes the tides rise and fall? Did you know the Schuylkill River is tidal? Does the ebb and flow of the oceans boggle your mind while you’re at the beach? Do you suddenly realize that your once dry blanket is being threatened by waves? Can you believe that the moon, a satellite hundreds of thousands of miles from Earth, plays a large role in the behavior of the tides?  Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center’s (FWWIC) free August educational program teaches families the science of the tides.
Science Saturdays are free and open to the public on August 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 2 – 4 p.m. at half hour intervals. The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is located at
640 Waterworks Drive
in Philadelphia.  For information call 215-685-0723.
Families will create their own moon phase calendar through interactive experiments by FWWIC educators at the Interpretive Center’s state-of-the-art lab. Explore the powerful force of the moon and its effect on water in a fun, light-hearted atmosphere that will open your eyes to the intriguing interaction of the Earth’s oceans and the Moon.
In addition to Science Saturdays, FWWIC’s Sunday Movie Matinee will screen “Rango” each Sunday in August at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center’s nicely cooled underground theater.  This 2011 American computer-animated Western comedy features the voices of Johnny Depp and Isla Fisher. The film tells the tale of a pet chameleon (Depp) who finds himself in the water-deprived town of “Dirt” after his terrarium falls from his owner’s car; he ultimately saves the day after a series of unfortunate and comical events. Come enjoy this 107-minute film for free with friends and family for laughs, life lessons and a break from the heat.
The Fairmount Water Works, the ideal location to learn more about the life in the river, was constructed in 1812 to pump water from the Schuylkill River. Almost from the day the waterwheels began turning, the graceful neoclassical buildings and beautiful grounds made the place an international tourist attraction renowned for melding nature and technology. Today the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is the Delaware River Basin's watershed education hub, offering visitors information about the impact of water on their daily lives and how they in turn impact their water supplies. Located off
Kelly Drive
in Philadelphia's East Fairmount Park, the Interpretive Center features a variety of hands-on, highly interactive exhibits including a live view of the Fairmount Dam fishway and a flyover of the Schuylkill River watershed. For more information, visit http://www.fairmountwaterworks.com/.

FREE Summer Open Houses

                         Newtown Square Historical Preservation Society
                                  SUMMER OPEN HOUSES
During the summer of 1748 in the
Newtown Square
tavern, the proprietor’s 11 year old son, Benjamin West, practiced his drawing.  He developed this skill several years before when he saw a sleeping child and tried to draw what he saw with a pencil and paper.  This inspired him to continue drawing and using his school pen on any available surface he could find, he sketched birds, flowers, and whatever else caught his fancy.  Native Indians populated Pennsylvania, and in summers they would return to live in Delaware County.  They noticed the young artist and his work and showed him how to mix local materials to make the red and yellow colors with which they decorated their ornaments.  A whole new world opened to the young boy, one that eventually led him to London.  In time he became court painter to King George III, founded the Royal Academy of Arts, and went on to became one of the greatest painters of the day.
The Newtown Square Historical Preservation Society opens the 1742 Square Tavern at Rt. 252 and Goshen Road, and the 1828 Paper Mill House and Museum, at St. David’s Road and paper Mill Road, each July and August on Sunday’s from 1-4:00 p.m.  There is NO CHARGE for visiting and taking a tour of these beautiful historic sites.  For more information, and to verify openings on a particular date, please check our website at http://www.historicnewtownsquare.org/.
