FREE OcTrolley Fest Coming Up In October

Darby Borough and Neighbors are Feeling OcTrolleyFestive

On Saturday, October 15, OcTrolleyFest will again roll through Darby Borough and neighboring communities with heritage, history, harmony and fun. Since 2005, OcTrolleyFest has celebrated area treasures including the historic, and still used, trolley line which first came to Delaware County as a horse-drawn streetcar line in 1858.  “It’s a celebration of transportation heritage and community,” said Jan Haigis, co-coordinator of the event sponsored by Sharon Savings Bank, Eden Cemetery, the Darby Borough Historical Commission and others. ”It’s a chance to take a new look at the historic treasures in our own backyard, meet new people, reconnect with old friends, and have fun istorical Commission .”

Once more free rides (space permitting) will be available between 11:00 am and 1:00 PM on a 1947 vintage streamlined trolley car (PCCll) through 366 years of Pennsylvania History.  “The rides will start from the Darby Library at 11:00 where kids can also make scarecrows out of recycled milk containers and march in the Pumpkin Parade at Noon,” said Haigis.   There will also be historical displays, announcement of the winners of the Art Contest, a showing of the Scribe Video “Precious Places,” a Time-Line,  and a concert of old favorites at the Darby Recreation Center, 10th and Ridge.

A special treat begins at 1:00 pm with guided tours of Eden Cemetery on Springfield Road in Collingdale. Eden is America’s oldest African-American public cemetery company and the resting places of five people especially significant to transportation history:  William Still and Octavius Catto who worked for human rights and the desegregation of Philadelphia streetcars, John Drew who created a successful Jitney Service so domestic help could get to their jobs in Lansdowne, and Carolyn LeCount and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper who, a hundred years before Rosa Parks, led sit-in protests with the same goals; the freedom for everyone to ride in peace and dignity.
All events are free and open to the public. For further information, please call (610) 583-0788 or visit www.OcTrolleyFest.org

Handwriting Analysis: The Line at Ridley Township Library

It's amazing what a line drawn on a piece of paper can reveal.  The direction, shape, slant, weight, and location of a line one draws on a piece of paper, in the air, or in the mind says a lot about one's nature, drives, and trajectory in life. Implications are significant for education, employment, relationships, and more.
Join handwriting analyst Philip Pearlman 6 pm Wed. (Oct. 5) for an analysis of The Line.
Pearlman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Temple University. He's been a Graphoanalyst since 1980, and certified in handwriting analysis since 1994. He was published in Sheila Lowe's Vanguard on The Line.  He has lectured in much of the U.S. and in Canada.

FREE Senior Forums In Delaware County

COUNTY COUNCIL AND COSA HOST
 TWO SENIOR CITIZEN RESOUCE FORUMS
Panel will discuss senior safety, consumer affairs, veteran’s services and more

Delaware County Council, in ongoing efforts to assist residents during today’s economic downturn, will hold two free Senior Citizen Resource Forums in October.
The Senior Forums will take place 1-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Drexelbrook Corporate Events Center, Drexel Hill, and 1-3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 at the Concordville Inn, Concord. Both events are open to all senior citizens, their families and caregivers.
The forums, organized by the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA), will feature a panel of representatives from various county programs who will detail what resources and supports are available to senior citizens.
“Our goal is to provide senior citizens with the tools they need to navigate today’s challenging economic climate, and to inform them about the many services and programs that are available to them through county government,” said County Council Chairman Jack Whelan.
“Studies indicate that during a recession, those hardest hit are senior citizens on fixed incomes. Not only do their resources get stretched, but there is an increase in the number of predators who will offer them get-rich fixes that are fraudulent. That’s why it’s important that we educate our seniors and help them find solutions to maintain their quality of life, during all economic conditions,” Councilman Whelan said.
At each Forum, representatives from the following county agencies will participate in a panel presentation. After the panel presentation, the representatives will be available to speak with individuals.
·        COSA: Seniors can turn to COSA for information on a wide variety of assistance and counseling services including health insurance counseling, crime victim services, legal services, volunteer opportunities, nursing home eligibility and community-based services and in-home supports.

·        District Attorney’s Office, Senior Exploitation Unit: This unit educates seniors about crimes such as identity theft, fiduciary theft, credit care theft or misuse, and financial or physical abuse. During challenging economic times, seniors are more likely to fall victim to exploitation.
·        Consumer Affairs: This is the watchdog for all consumers regarding major purchases and transactions, particularly in the area of home repairs, credit issues and tenant/landlord agreements. More than 50 percent of the complaints filed with Consumer Affairs are by senior citizens who are often more vulnerable to consumer fraud. The Consumer Affairs staff can help seniors do research before a transaction, and they can mediate problems when they arise, to ensure each consumer gets what they are paying for.
·        Veterans Affairs: This department helps veterans and their families apply for certain benefits from the state and federal governments for which they are eligible. These benefits include federal pensions for veterans or their widows and real estate tax exemptions for veterans with 100 percent service-related disabilities. Veterans can also get assistance to gain admission to the Veterans Administration hospitals or treatment programs. Applications for burial and headstone allotments are also processed through Veterans Affairs.
·        Treasurer’s Tax Claim Bureau: The duty of the Tax Claim Bureau is to collect delinquent taxes for school districts, municipalities and the county. Representatives can help seniors understand the collection process and the on-account payment agreements that are offered to people with financial hardships.
Representatives will also be available from Community Action Agency, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service and Social Security. Representatives can also help with the open enrollment for Medicare which begins earlier this year, on October 15.
County Council invites seniors and their family members to attend the Senior Citizen Resource Forums to learn about the many services that can enable seniors to maintain their independence and quality of life in Delaware County.
“Today’s recession can be particularly hard on seniors who are living on a fixed income. We want to ensure that they are able to remain in their own homes and communities with appropriate supports,” said Council Chair Whelan.

FOR INFORMATION: Both events are free. To register contact Barbara Nicolardi at (610) 490-1524 or send an e-mail to nicolardib@co.delaware.pa.us.

People will have a chance to meet with new providers who have recently been qualified to provide services in Delaware County, in addition to traditional providers.
Dr. Susan Proulx, deputy administrator for the County Office of Intellectual Disabilities, said it is important for families to know what services are available to they can choose wisely what is best for their individual family member.
"We invite all consumers and their families, as well as established and new providers, to attend the Provider Fair," said Dr. Proulx.
"In these difficult economic times, we recognize that there is no new waiver capacity for people on the Delaware County waiting list. However, from time to time, we do get openings which we assign to consumers and their families in a priority order," she said. "Our families need to know what service options might meet their needs, in case funding becomes available, or in case they need to change from one service provider to another."

FREE Program Available To Delaware County Business Owners

                                            Delaware County companies think “global”
at World Trade Center event at Ellis Preserve
Local businesses can tap into markets in Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, and more

Homegrown Delaware County companies can learn about exciting opportunities in the global market – from Brazil to China -- at a special trade event being held Sept. 23 at the Ellis Preserve in Newtown Square.
Delaware County Council and the County Commerce Center announced that a sister economic development program, the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia (WTCGP), will host the event where local business owners can meet one-on-one with international trade representatives from various markets, including China, England, Australia, Brazil, Canada and other nations.
The Ellis Preserve event is part of Pennsylvania International Week (PIW), two days of meetings and events starting Sept. 22 at the Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia, followed by the Sept. 23 at the Ellis Preserve corporate center, 3805 West Chester Pike. The event is free; meetings are by appointment.
The goal of the PIW is to help local companies tap into international markets.
“This is a great opportunity for Delaware County businesses to expand into international markets,” said County Councilman Tom McGarrigle, a small business owner from Springfield. “Local companies might not have considered exporting their product overseas, but at this event they can meet with international trade representatives who can help them get started.”
Two Delaware County companies can attest to the value of tapping into international markets with the help of the World Trade Center program.
“Meeting with the authorized international trade representatives during PIW is really the first step into a new global market,” said Josh Fishbein, international account executive at Penguin Brands in Sharon Hill, a local company known for shoe care products and performance gear.
“Last year I was able to meet with a number of different country representatives and their insight helped me to plan our international approach for the new calendar year,” Fishbein said.
Dr. Lavern D. Wedeven, president of Wedeven Associates in Edgmont, said the trade meetings are an “incredible opportunity” for companies who are looking to begin exporting, or who want to take the next step to expand existing export operations.
“On a recent trip to China, we were able to meet with the Pennsylvania authorized trade representative in Beijing and reviewed the market opportunities there and learned about the Chinese business culture,” said Wedeven, whose company solves problems associated with the “tribology” of mechanical systems. “The authorized trade rep set up meetings, advised on proper protocol and helped ensure that I was prepared so my sales meetings were successful.”
Patrick Killian, Director of the Delaware County Commerce Center, said local companies are assisted through a teamwork effort by his office, the WTCGP and Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development.
He said the state program has an aggressive international marketing program and a comprehensive export assistance program that local companies can tap into.
WTCGP is the point of contact for Delaware County companies who would like to access the resources of the export assistance program, such as identifying overseas partners, in-country trade assistance and logistical support.
The World Trade Center program at Ellis Preserve is FREE and open to Delaware County businesses. For information or appointment times call Ron Drozd at 215-586-4240, ext. 122, or email to rdrozd@wtc.phila.org. For information about the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia visit http://www.wtcphila.org/. For information about the Delaware County Commerce Center visit http://www.delcopa.org/.
