Widener to host screening of documentary ‘1971’
In 1971, Media, Pa. became the focus of an intense FBI manhunt to discover who broke into the bureau’s office there and stole all of the files, leaving only questions that remained unanswered for more than 40 years. Earlier this year, former Washington Post reporter Betty Medsger answered many of the questions in her book “The Burglary: The Discovery of J. Edgar Hoover’s Secret FBI.” Now, the story is also being told in the documentary film “1971” which debuted at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival.
Widener University will host a screening of “1971” followed by a discussion including Medsger and Chester Mayor John Linder at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 in Founders Hall Room 109. Copies of Medsger’s book will be available for purchase at the event, and she will hold a book signing following the panel discussion.
A group calling themselves the “Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI” took responsibility for the 1971 burglary and mailed copies of the stolen files to members of the news media, including Medsger, and to the organizations being investigated by the FBI. Among the documents stolen from the FBI office was a file on the bureau’s investigation of the Black Student Union at Widener, then known as PMC Colleges. Linder, a 1976 graduate of Widener, was a member of the Black Student Union at the time of the burglary.

The film screening is free and open to the public.

Her inspirational book is the result. The book began as a blog challenging herself, on-line and publicly, to do something provocative every day. She took the Polar Bear Plunge, took an art class with a nude model, and paid it forward by feeding parking meters of strangers.

Free presentation by Christine Flowers
The Friends of the Marple Public Library have announced that Christine Flowers will be their guest speaker Wednesday Oct. 15 at 7:15 p.m. in the lower level community room. Flowers has well-articulated views on pressing and controversial political and social issues that face our nation and our regional scene. She voices her views and thoughts both on television and in weekly newspaper columns. Her presentation at the library is entitled, "Is Feminism Dead? If Yes, Good Riddance".
Feminism as a social and political movement has actively shaped national policies for many decades most recently in 1963 when Betty Friedan wrote the bestseller The Feminine Mystique in which she took issue with the mainstream media image of woman who stayed at home thereby limiting their possibilities and wasting their talent and potential. Now may be the time to give this movement a second opinion.
Christine Flowers has lived in Delaware County since 1969. A product of local schools, she graduated from Merion Mercy and obtained her undergraduate degree in French from Bryn Mawr College in 1983 and her law degree from Villanova in 1987. Christine has been practicing immigration law for 20 years, after having taught high school at the Haverford School and Villa Maria. Christine has been writing a regular opinion column for the Philadelphia Daily News since 2002, and a weekly opinion column for the Delaware County Sunday Times since April of 2013. She has also been a panelist on the Sunday morning round table talk show 6ABC’s Inside Story since 2006.
The program is free and open to the public.  A reception will immediately follow the presentation so all may meet and speak with Ms. Flowers.

According to the bill’s supporters, “Every year, about 10,000 homeowners lose their homes in Pennsylvania. Families across the Commonwealth are being torn apart because they can no longer afford property taxes. The best our elected officials have offered property owners is “relief,” but relief doesn’t cut it when property tax increases far outpace the relief offered. Everyone know that the costs for just about everything keeps increasing…..the one thing that keeps outpacing everything is the property tax- increasing on average a tremendous 146%. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. Pennsylvania property owners are tapped out.”

Provider Fair Will Showcase Programs for Those with Intellectual Disabilities
The Delaware County Office of Intellectual Disabilities invites individuals and families to a Provider Fair that will showcase programs and services that are available to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
The Provider Fair will take place 5 to 8p.m., Tuesday (Oct. 21) in rooms 171-172 at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit in Morton. The Fair will give people a one-stop opportunity to research a wide variety of service providers, including day support programs, companion services, residential services including life sharing, in-home supports, employment supports and respite providers.
People will have a chance to meet with new providers who have recently been qualified to provide services in Delaware County, in addition to traditional providers.
Dr. Susan Proulx, deputy administrator for the County Office of Intellectual Disabilities, said it is important for families to know what services are available so they can choose wisely what is best for their individual family member.
“We invite all consumers and their families, as well as established and new providers, to attend the Provider Fair,” said Dr. Proulx. “Our families need to know what service options might meet their needs, and sometimes those needs change as people age or their circumstances change.”
Individuals enrolled in the waiver program can attend to research their choice of services and providers since new programs are always being developed.
Supports Coordinators will also attend the Provider Fair.
The Provider Fair is free and open to the public. For information contact Paula Fawcett, deputy administrator for the Administrative Entity for the county, at 610-713-2463.
