Free Lung Cancer Screenings

Free CT Lung Cancer Screenings Offered

Darby, PA (February 28, 2011):  Mercy Cancer Care at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby and Mercy Philadelphia Hospital in West Philadelphia are launching a new free Lung Cancer screening program beginning March 1, 2011. Individuals who have a long smoking history could qualify for the screening program.  There is a limited number of these screenings being performed at no cost to the patient.  They will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis.  The test is not invasive, and takes less than five minutes to perform.
Lung cancer, which is primarily caused by cigarette smoking, is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The majority of cases aren’t detected until symptoms appear. New studies have shown that low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancers at relatively early stages and reduce lung cancer deaths among smokers.
At this time, Mercy Cancer Care is the only program in the Philadelphia area that is offering free low dose CT lung screening studies – normally a several hundred dollar cost to patients. The lung cancer screening is just one of many community outreach initiatives that provide free healthcare opportunities and education to our communities.

In December, 2010, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Three-Year Accreditation to Mercy Cancer Care at Mercy Fitzgerald and Mercy Philadelphia Hospitals. CoC accreditation is only given to facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

A facility receives a Three-Year Approval following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement). In addition a facility receives a compliance rating for all other standards.

Mercy Cancer Care Lung Screening is limited to qualified individuals. Insurance is not required to qualify. An individual can call Central Scheduling to determine whether they qualify for the program. Call:
Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital – 610.237.2525.
Mercy Philadelphia Hospital – 215.748.9117

FREE 'History Of Catholic Ed' Speakers, Discussion At Neumann

Experts on three legendary figures in the history of Catholic education will speak at Neumann University 2p.m., Wednesday, March 16. The panel discussion, “The Genius of Catholic Higher Education: The Legacies of Pope John Paul II, Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman and Saint John Neumann,” is scheduled for the Meagher Theatre as part of the University’s 46th Charter Day celebration.
Moderated by CBS 3 Anchor Pat Ciarrocchi, the discussion features Michael Galligan-Stierle, Ph.D., president of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, who will speak on Pope John Paul II and Ex Corde Ecclesiae; Edward Miller, Ph.D., STD, a Cardinal Newman scholar and author, currently a professor of theology at Gwynedd Mercy College; and Rev. Richard Boever, Ph.D., author of the recently published book, St John Neumann, His Life and Spirituality.
From 2000-2006, Galligan-Stierle served as the assistant secretary for Catholic higher education and campus ministry at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. During the past 40 years, he has been employed as a Catholic campus minister, university professor, internship supervisor, and student affairs professional. His 1996 book, The Gospel on Campus: A Handbook of Campus Ministry Programs and Resources, is viewed as a standard for Catholic campus ministry in the U.S.
Miller received the University of Louvain’s doctor of sacred theology degree in 1982, working under the renowned Newman scholar, Jan Hendrik Walgrave.  He has taught at Ohio Dominican University and Emory University, where he was chair of the Ph.D. program in systematic theology.
Since 1974 Father Boever, a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, has served as parish priest and pastor in St. Louis and Chicago; taught theology at Newman University and St. Louis University; served as university chaplain; and been director of Redemptorist formation for the pre-novitiate program.
The University’s Charter Day celebration will begin with noon liturgy in Our Lady of Angels Convent, celebrated by Bishop Michael Fitzgerald, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s secretary for Catholic education. A reception will follow the Mass and lead to the Dr. Dorothy A.P. Leunissen Presidential Lecture, which this year takes the form of a panel discussion.
The program is FREE and open to the public. To reserve a seat for the 2p.m. panel discussion, call 610-558-5501.

FREE Family Programs At Water Works

Go Green and Help Save Our Planet This March at
Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center
Science Saturdays and Matinee Sundays highlight FREE family
events each weekend in March

PHILADELPHIA (February 22, 2011) – When you take out the trash, do you ever think what’s in it and where it’s going? Humans create a lot of pollution, but did you know that much of our household waste can be reused? Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center’s (FWWIC) FREE March educational programs focus on the importance of composting.
Science Saturdays are free and open to the public on March 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 2 – 4 p.m. at half hour intervals. Families will get their hands dirty and wet through interactive experiments by FWWIC educators at the Interpretive Center’s state-of-the-art lab. Gain a scientific understanding on how nature recycles and how you can do your part. It’s a fun, light-hearted atmosphere that will open your eyes to the power of nature. Families are also invited to visit Pollutionopolis, America’s most contaminated and disgusting town to see how a city can really mess up its water supply.
The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is located at 640 Waterworks Drive in Philadelphia.  For information call 215-685-0723.
In addition to Science Saturdays, FWWIC’s Sunday Movie Matinee will screen “The 11th Hour” each Sunday in March at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center’s theater.  This 2007 documentary was created, produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio and focuses on the critical problems facing our ecosystem and what we can do to stop the threat. The film features commentary by politicians, scientists, and environmental activists. Come enjoy this 92-minute film for free with friends and family in what becomes the most “eco-friendly” movie theater in the city each Sunday in March.
“Local families will be fascinated to learn they can do more for our ecosystem than simply setting out items each week for recycling,” says Karen Young, director of FWWIC. “It’s sometimes hard to believe, but beautiful things can grow from soil created from the things we’re throwing out in the trash every day.”
The Fairmount Water Works, the ideal location to learn more about the life in the river, was constructed in 1812 to pump water out of the Schuylkill River. Almost from the day the waterwheels began turning, the graceful neoclassical buildings and beautiful grounds made the place an international tourist attraction renowned for melding nature and technology. Today the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is the Delaware River Basin's watershed education hub, offering visitors information about the impact of water on their daily lives and how they in turn impact their water supplies. Located off Kelly Drive in Philadelphia's East Fairmount Park, the Interpretive Center features a variety of hands-on, highly interactive exhibits including a live view of the Fairmount Dam fish way and a flyover of the Schuylkill River watershed. For more information, visit www.fairmountwaterworks.com.

The discussions are free and open to the public and will take place in the Scott Arboretum Horticultural Library. Participants will need to read each month’s selection prior to the discussion. One copy of each book is available for members to check out of the Scott Arboretum’s Horticultural Library. For more information, call 610-328-8025 or visit http://www.scottarboretum.org/.

Established in 1929 as a living memorial to Arthur Hoyt Scott, the Arboretum is open to the public year-round free of charge, from dawn to dusk. Adam Levine in the November/December 2002 issue of Garden Design magazine described the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College as "the most beautiful campus in America." Kids Can See Constitution Center FREE all summer long!

GEORGE WASHINGTON RETURNS TO PHILADELPHIA
THIS SUMMER AT THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER
PLUS: KIDS FREE SUMMER!

Philadelphia, PA (February 22, 2011) – The “Father of Our Country” won the American Revolution, chaired the Constitutional Convention, and served as our first president – all in the Philadelphia region.  This summer, visitors can uncover a fresh perspective on George Washington through the National Constitution Center’s feature exhibition, Discover the Real George Washington: New Views from Mount Vernon.
Discover the Real George Washington: New Views from Mount Vernon was organized by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded in 1954 by the late media entrepreneur for whom it is named.
The Center is pairing the exhibition, which runs from July 1 through September 5, 2011, with its first-ever Kids Free Summer promotion!  Families can save a pocketful of “Washingtons” with this special deal: free admission to the Center for up to four children (ages 12 and under) with one paying adult.  The promotion applies to both general admission and group reservations.
“We want more families to visit the National Constitution Center, and we think bringing George Washington back to Philadelphia and letting kids join their parents for free is an unbeatable combination that will bring both tourists and Philadelphia natives through the door,” said National Constitution Center President and CEO David Eisner.  “George Washington built this country and what we stand for here in Philadelphia, and this summer, he’ll remind us again of who we are as a people and a nation.”
Discover the Real George Washington gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at our nation’s first president through his achievements, legacies, family, intellectual pursuits, and entrepreneurial ventures.  The 3,800-square-foot exhibition is organized into eleven sections, each focusing on a specific aspect of Washington’s life, including:
  • An Ambitious Youth
  • A Dauntless Warrior
  • A Troubled Slaveholder
  • Uneasy in the Mouth
  • Beloved Hero
Nearly 100 objects from Mount Vernon’s world-class collection, including full-scale figures of Washington, architectural models, decorative and fine art items, maps, manuscripts, and paintings reveal the personal side of Washington and uncover his roles as an entrepreneur, farmer, and businessman.  Highlights include:
·       An original set of Washington’s dentures, made of ivory, human teeth, and animal teeth
1       Several original works of art, including Gilbert Stuart’s classic Washington portrait
2       Three full-size, life-like figures of Washington based on the latest forensic research showing him:
·       As a teenaged, red-haired surveyor from Virginia just prior to the French & Indian War
1       As a Revolutionary War hero atop his horse, Blueskin, in a snow-covered forest at Valley Forge
2       During his presidential inauguration ceremony at Federal Hall in New York City
·       The Washington family Bible
·       Original pieces of Martha Washington’s jewelry
“In Philadelphia, George Washington organized the building blocks of our nation when he was president, and he set a remarkable number of precedents, both politically and socially,” said James C. Rees, president of Historic Mount Vernon.  “To have our exhibition just yards from where he lived and worked is a big deal – we’re absolutely thrilled.”
Visitors also will have the opportunity to view videos by The History Channel, focusing on religion, slavery, espionage, Washington’s dentures, his state-of-the-art gristmill, and the creation of the life-like Washington figures seen in the exhibition.
In addition, interactive touch screens and immersive environments will bring stories to life for visitors of all ages.  Guests can sit at a full-size replica of Washington’s pew at Pohick Church, as well as explore detailed models of Fort Necessity and Washington’s Mansion and estate, gristmill, and 16-sided treading barn.
Admission to Discover the Real George Washington is $17.50 for adults and $15.50 for seniors (ages 65 and up) and students.  Children ages 12 and under and active military are FREE.  Group rates also are available.  Admission to the Center’s main exhibition, The Story of We the People, including the award-winning theater production “Freedom Rising,” is included.  iPod audio tours cost an additional $5.  For ticket information, call 215.409.6700 or visit www.constitutioncenter.org

The exhibition was designed by MFM Design, Inc. and fabricated by Explus, Inc.  The forensic figures of George Washington were created by StudioEIS.
Visit www.DiscoverGeorgeWashington.org.
To coincide with Discover the Real George Washington and the President’s House at Independence National Historical Park, the Center also will host The President’s House: Their Untold Stories in Quilts in Posterity Hall.  This collection of art quilts celebrates the humanity, dignity, and courage of the nine enslaved persons owned by George and Martha Washington at the President’s House.
Created by a multiracial and multicultural group of both internationally acclaimed and novice quilt artists, the quilts are intended to stimulate dialogue about slavery and freedom in the paradigm of democracy.  Additional quilts will be on display at the Independence Visitor Center and the African American Museum in Philadelphia.  Admission to The President’s House: Their Untold Stories in Quilts is FREE with regular museum admission.
In addition to the exhibitions, the Center will create and distribute a special map and brochure featuring locations in the greater Philadelphia region that have significant connections to George Washington’s story.  For the complete “Summer of Washington” experience, guests are encouraged to visit sites such as Valley Forge National Historical Park, Washington Crossing Historic Park, President’s House, Independence Hall, and Cliveden, among others.  “Summer of Washington” maps will be available at each partner location.  The Center is pleased to partner on this initiative with Independence National Historical Park, Historic Philadelphia, Inc., the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, Visit Bucks County, and the Friends of Washington Crossing Park.

‘Virtual Justice’ Author At Swarthmore Library Tonight

In Virtual Justice, Greg Lastowka illustrates the real legal dilemmas posed by virtual worlds in his book, Virtual Justice. He will offer a free program on the subject 7p.m., tonight, Thursday (Feb. 10) at Swarthmore Library.
“Tens of millions of people are living part of their life in a virtual world. In places like World of Warcraft, Second Life, and Free Realms, people are making friends, building communities, creating art, and making real money. Business is booming on the virtual frontier, as billions of dollars are paid in exchange for pixels on screens,” he writes.
“But sometimes things go wrong. Virtual criminals defraud online communities in pursuit of real-world profits. People feel cheated when their avatars lose virtual property to wrongdoers. Increasingly, they turn to legal systems for solutions. But when your avatar has been robbed, what law is there to assist you?”
Lastowka will present the most recent lawsuits and controversies, and explain how governments are responding to the chaos on the cyberspace frontier.
Lastowka is a Professor at the Rutgers School of Law Camden and teaches courses in the laws of property and intellectual property. He is an expert on Internet law and his opinions have been quoted in publications such as Nature, The Economist, Scientific American, and the New York Times.  He lives in Swarthmore with his family.
