FREE Summer Programs At Water Works

Discover the Earth’s Problems and Solve Them
At Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center
Science Saturdays and Matinee Sundays highlight free family
fun each weekend in July

PHILADELPHIA (June 21, 2011) –What would you do if you turned on your faucet and no water flowed? Grab the pitcher from the refrigerator or buy a bottle of water? Have you ever wondered what life would be like without easy access to clean drinking water?
Not everyone in the world can obtain clean drinking water and many populations have to come up with solutions for satisfying their thirst.  Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center’s (FWWIC) free July educational programs focus on solving the drinking water problem.
Science Saturdays are free and open to the public on July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 2 – 4 p.m. at half hour intervals. The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is located at 640 Waterworks Drive in Philadelphia.  For information call 215-685-0723.
Families will work together through interactive experiments by FWWIC educators at the Interpretive Center’s state-of-the-art lab using their skills and creativity to engineer a solution to the drinking water problem. Gain an understanding of how children around the world use water and obtain drinking water in a family-friendly atmosphere that will open your eyes to the problems facing our planet.
In addition to Science Saturdays, FWWIC’s Sunday Movie Matinee will screen “Home” each Sunday in July at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center’s nicely cooled underground media center.  This 2009 documentary, created by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and narrated by Glenn Close, focuses on the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet featuring entirely aerial footage of more than 50 countries. The film is carbon offset, meaning that the CO2 emissions as a result of the movie were calculated and offset by sums of money that are used to provide clean energy for those who have none. Come enjoy this 95-minute film for free with friends and family in what becomes the most “eco-friendly” movie theater in the city each Sunday in July.
The Fairmount Water Works, the ideal location to learn more about the life in the river, was constructed in 1812 to pump water from the Schuylkill River. Almost from the day the waterwheels began turning, the graceful neoclassical buildings and beautiful grounds made the place an international tourist attraction renowned for melding nature and technology. Today the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is the Delaware River Basin's watershed education hub, offering visitors information about the impact of water on their daily lives and how they in turn impact their water supplies. Located off Kelly Drive in Philadelphia's East Fairmount Park, the Interpretive Center features a variety of hands-on, highly interactive exhibits including a live view of the Fairmount Dam fishway and a flyover of the Schuylkill River watershed. For more information, visit http://www.fairmountwaterworks.com/.

CHEAP haircuts, manicures, and more!!!!

I discovered a really cheapy-cheapy bargain this week. It's not free, but it is a really good deal! Empire Beauty School at Route 1 and Sproul Rd. in Springfield offers bargain basement prices on all your beauty needs, because the work is done by students ready to graduate. I used to go to Venus Beauty Academy in Sharon Hill years ago, and I forgot what a good deal this is. For example, a wash and cur for hair costs five bucks. :Last night I had a manicure and pedicure- it cost me $15 FOR BOTH! They have facials, hair extensions, fake nails, coloring, highlights, and all kinds of other stuff. They even have a "Bridal package," a "Men's Package," etc. Everything is dirt cheap compared with a regular salon. So check it out!

FREE Admission at museum For Military and their Families All summer long!

Brandywine River Museum to Participate in Blue Star Museums

Brandywine River Museum is one of more than 1,300 museums across America
to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer

Chadds Ford, PA  May 23, 2011--The Brandywine River Museum will offer free admission to active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2011 as part of the Blue Star Museums program, a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Blue Star Families, and more than 1,300 museums across America. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Museums.

"We thank all military personnel for their service to the country, and are honored to share our outstanding art collection with them and their families," said James H. Duff, director of the Brandywine River Museum. This summer, visitors will enjoy the exhibition Farm Work by Jamie Wyeth, on view from June 11 through September 11. The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., daily.

"Blue Star Museums may be the program at the NEA of which I am proudest," said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. "Blue Star Museums recognizes and thanks our military families for all they are doing for our country, and simultaneously begins young people on a path to becoming life-long museum goers."

"Last year the success of the inaugural year of the Blue Star Museums program showed that partnerships between the nation's museum and military communities are a natural," said Blue Star Families Chairman Kathy Roth-Douquet. "We are thrilled that 300,000 military family members visited our partner museums in the summer of 2010. We hope to exceed that number this year as the military community takes advantage of the rich cultural heritage they defend and protect every day. PUBLIC INVITED TO TAPING AT LAUREL HILL CEMETERY ABOUT CIVIL WAR EXPERIENCE FOR WOMEN

The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) are teaming up once again to bring “Humanities on the Road,” an arts and culture-themed program to a statewide audience for a second season.

On Saturday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m., PCN and the PHC will take a look into the Civil Wartime experience for women during a discussion at the Laurel Hill Cemetery with historian, Judith Giesberg.  Giesberg will talk about the life of Lydia Bixby, a widow and mother of five sons killed during the Civil War.  Bixby was the recipient of a condolence letter from President Lincoln—perhaps the most famous condolence letter ever written.

Currently an Associate Professor of History at Villanova University, Giesberg has researched women and their wartime lives.  From this research, she has recently authored, “Army at Home: Women and the Civil War on the Northern Home Front.”

Tickets to the June 25 event are free and are available on first come, first served basis.  For information on tickets, contact 215-228-8200.  Located on the banks of the Schuylkill River at 3822 Ridge Avenue in Philadelphia, Laurel Hill Cemetery is the first cemetery in the nation to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.

This “Humanities on the Road” taping is just one of the dozen on-location shoots at various cultural venues across the state before a live audience.   Each program offers insight into the state’s vast cultural landmarks and ethnic heritage through interactive presentations.  The second season premiere of “Humanities on the Road” hosted by award-winning broadcast journalist, Tracey Matisak, will debut on the statewide network during the fall of 2011.

Philly's Ultimate Free Event Is One Big Party!

Wawa Welcome America!’s Independence Day Parade takes the celebration to the streets with 4,000 participants from a dozen states
The City of Philadelphia’s largest-ever Fourth of July Parade winds through the country’s most historic mile.

(PHILADELPHIA) June 14, 2011 With more than 4,000 participants from a dozen states, 16 marching musical groups, nine floats, five military branches and a multitude of special guests, Wawa Welcome America!’s Independence Day Parade is the most diverse Fourth of July parade in the country. The impressive Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on July 4 and winds through the nation’s most historic mile.

“This year, every other element has a musical aspect, so the Parade will be a strolling celebration brimming with top-notch entertainment and spectacular sights,” said Todd Marcocci, Parade producer. “Philadelphia’s Independence Day Parade will be bigger and better than ever before, and we are hoping thousands upon thousands will come out to experience the awe-inspiring production first-hand in the very place where our nation was founded.”
New this year is an extended Parade route to 9th Street with optimal viewing, along with a variety of show-stopping musical performances on elaborate floats, from the Hoh Japanese Drummers to the Minas Brazilian Dancers and Drummers. Mattatuck Drum Band from Connecticut, founded in 1767 and the oldest fife and drum band in America, will proudly play the music of our founding fathers, and a cast of patriots include Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Ben Franklin.
Set to make this year’s parade unforgettable is a “Salute to the Armed Forces” float with active duty enlisted soldiers and officers from the Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard and veterans by the hundreds. The salute will be led by the Pennsylvania Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycles, a group that pays homage to African American soldiers who fought as early as the Spanish American War.
Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan, Grand Marshal Major General Craig of the Pennsylvania National Guard, Mayor Nutter and Miss Pennsylvania are among the roster of special guests, and Wawa will recall its earliest days with its antique dairy truck. Additional highlights include the Northern Lights Home School Marching Band from Michigan and the Cotter High School Marching Band from Minnesota!
The array of entertaining, patriotic and multicultural marchers, music, dancers and floats will dazzle and impress all.
Parade Route
Due to the popularity of the Parade, the route is expanded by two blocks. It marches through downtown Historic Philadelphia, stepping off at 11 am at 5th and Chestnut Streets immediately following the July 4th Independence Day Ceremony.  The procession heads up Chestnut Street, passing Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, turns right on 9th Street, then proceeds one block north to Market Street where it turns right again. Once on Market Street the parade marches six blocks downtown though Historic Philadelphia and ends at Front Street.

People of all ages are invited to experience Wawa Welcome America!, the City of Philadelphia’s free July 4th Festival, from June 24 to July 4, 2011. With 11 days of free patriotic fun and pageantry including a full-scale parade, fireworks, history, live entertainment, the largest free outdoor concert in America, food, culture and pageantry, there is something for the whole family’s taste.
Wawa Welcome America! is a multi-day festival that celebrates America’s birthday in America’s birthplace, Philadelphia, and is produced by Welcome America, Inc. For more information, please visit www.welcomeamerica.com.
