Volunteers Needed To Pitch in at the Darby Creek Clean-Up at Heinz Refuge April 21; FREE Lunch Provided
Spring cleaning is taking place throughout the region and the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is no exception.  The Annual Darby Creek Spring Clean-Up will be held 8 am to 12 noon  Saturday, April 21.
Clean-Up Coordinator and Refuge Facilities Manager, Mike McMenamin said, "As in past years we'll be tackling many of the places where debris has a tendency to collect.  Staging areas will be at the Route 420 Parking area in Prospect Park and at the refuge main entrance at 86th Street and Lindbergh Blvd. in southwest Philadelphia."
McMenamin said that he'd appreciate volunteers calling the refuge at 215-365-3118 to pre-register so preparations can be made as to how many work gloves, trash bags, and lunch items should be on hand. Volunteers should have sturdy work boots and/or footwear they won't mind getting muddy. Groups and individuals are all welcome to participate. After the clean-up lunch will be provided to all volunteers back at the Cusano Environmental Education Center.
The refuge clean-up does not always occur on the same day as the Darby/Cobbs Creek Watershed-Wide Clean-Up, sponsored by DCVA. This is due to the tidal influences found in the lower portion of the watershed which includes the refuge.  This is one of those times so the rest of the watershed will be cleaned up on Saturday, April 28.  In total, the watershed encompasses 31 municipalities and 77 square miles.
For additional information on the April 28 clean-up contact DCVA at: www. dcva.org
