FREE Tour, Book Discussions at Scott Arboretum

Learn about the inner workings, benefits, and beauty of green roofs while exploring the three we have at the Arboretum. Please note the level of difficulty on these tours is higher than others we offer; a brisk walk and several steps are required to reach the final roof. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted on the roofs.
The tour will begin at the Scott Arboretum offices and is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be canceled. For more information, please call the Scott Arboretum offices at 610-328-8025.
In another event, people can join fellow garden enthusiasts and book lovers as they discuss books about plants, nature, and the environment. “Nature’s Narratives” is a book discussion group sponsored by the Scott Arboretum where readers come together to discuss a book once a month and share in the reading experience. This month the group will discuss James Lovelock's Gaia. Written for the non-scientist, Gaia is a journey through time and space in search of evidence with which to support a new and radically different model of our planet. In contrast to conventional belief that living matter is passive in the face of threats to its existence, the book explores the hypothesis that the earth's living matter -- air, ocean, and land surfaces -- forms a complex system that has the capacity to keep the Earth a fit place for life.

The discussions are free and open to the public and will take place in the Wister Center. Participants will need to read each month’s selection prior to the discussion. One copy of each book is available for members to check out of the Scott Arboretum Horticultural Library. For more information, call 610-328-8025 or visit www.scottarboretum.org.
The Scott Arboretum is an educational garden of ideas and suggestions. Covering more than 300 acres of the Swarthmore College Campus and exhibiting over 4,000 different kinds of plants, the Arboretum displays some of the best trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals for use in the Delaware Valley. Established in 1929 as a living memorial to Arthur Hoyt Scott, the Arboretum is open to the public year-round free of charge, from dawn to dusk. Adam Levine of Garden Design magazine described the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College as "the most beautiful campus in America." Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please call the Arboretum Offices at 610-328-8025. Visit us at www.scottarboretum.org.

FREE Film series at Peace Center

The Peace Center of Delaware County First-Friday Free Large Screen Film Series continues at 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6. "NO," the 2013 Oscar Nominee "Best Foreign Language Film" will be screened.
The film is rated R for scenes of violence, oppression and language and has an hour and 50 minute running time. The Spanish film with English subtitles is the true story of the ad executive whose media campaign helped to depose a Chilean military dictator. On Sept. 11, 1973, General Augusto Pinochet seized power in Chile in a bloody coup supported by the United States government. The military coup overthrew the freely elected Marxist government of Salvador Allende. Fifteen years later in 1988, international pressure forced Pinochet to accept a "yes" or "no" vote by Chileans on his continued rule. A young Chilean ad executive devises an unique media plan to promote a "no" vote on the referendum and to free Chile of Pinochet.
"NO" is a moving docudrama that combines emotional charge and satire with a political thriller to tell the true story of the media campaign that helped to peacefully overthrow one of the most brutal military dictatorships of our time.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments.  A film discussion will follow the screening.

Sittin’ In is curated by acclaimed jazz bassist and Director of the Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program, Anthony Tidd, who invites renowned house bands to host a night of informal, spontaneous jam sessions on the Commonwealth Plaza stage from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Philly's hottest musicians revisit the classic jam session on the Plaza Stage with an eclectic mix of cross-genre grooves that meet horns, vinyl, and vocals.  Sittin’ In begins with a performance by local student artists followed by music from Philly’s hottest young DJ, DJ Phsh, spinning to warm up the crowd.  Then, the house band, selected by the host of the night, takes the stage to perform a short set, followed by more music from DJ Phsh before the final set opens up to select local artists, chosen by the host of the night, to jam with the house band.  Each Sittin’ In evolves uniquely depending on the host, but every session gives attendees the opportunity to dance, relax and listen to exceptional music in one of the world’s greatest jazz venues.
And, new  to the scene! The MC (that's Mistress of Ceremonies), the incomparable Laiya St. Clair. Laiya graces the airwaves on HOT 107.9 as co-host of the Philly Morning Show.

Chef Jose Garces' award-winning delectable bites and drinks are now available on the Kimmel Center's campus through concessions, elevating pre-show and performance experience to new levels. Group Cash bar available at the PECO and Annex bars.

Historic county Courthouse
featured in PCN film airing in September; FREE public showing on Sept. 24

Television cameras normally aren’t permitted in the Delaware County Courthouse. But an exception was made when the historic and majestic Courthouse was the star of a Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) film airing in September on PCN.
The fascinating and rich history of the Courthouse, built in 1848, is brought to life in this documentary, introduced by Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle and narrated by Vice Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr. The film will air on several dates in September, which is History Month in Delaware County.
Today’s county residents know the Courthouse as a landmark in Media and its steps are a  gathering place for parades, rallies and special events. But, as people will learn from the PCN documentary, the original Courthouse had a jail and gallows out back.
The first case tried at the Media Courthouse was that of John R. Bergen who was indicted for keeping a “tippling house” and Mr. Bergen was fined $30 for selling liquor against the law.
One of the early judges, William Broomall, was known for chewing tobacco on the bench where he kept a brass spittoon.
The 30-minute video takes people through two centuries of Delaware County history, and explains how Delaware County was carved out of Chester County in 1789. This region became the 32nd Judicial District with cases originally heard at the Chester Courthouse.
The documentary is part of the 2013 Courthouse Series produced by PCN for the County Commissioners’ Association of Pennsylvania.
The Delaware County Courthouse will be featured on PCN at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, and 2 p.m. Saturday, September 14. In Delaware County, PCN airs on various cable networks: on Comcast it can be seen on channel 10 (depending on the municipality’s programming) or digital channel 186; on Verizon, its airs on channel 9, and on RCN it sometimes airs on channel 55. The show also airs on the PCN website at www.PCNtv.com.
Delaware County Council will host a public screening of the film at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, in the County Council meeting room at the Government Center in Media.
“It really gives me great pride to show residents of Pennsylvania our Courthouse, which really tells the history of our county,” said Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle. “Many of our residents have never been inside of this magnificent building so I am happy that PCN chose our Courthouse for their 2013 Courthouse series.”
In the documentary, people will learn how there was a battle between the “Chesterites” and the “removalists” to determine the best location for a Courthouse.
When the Courthouse opened in 1848, there was one courtroom. Today there are 12 courtrooms in the Courthouse and four additional courtrooms in the Fronefield Building.
People will get to see inside Courtroom One, the ceremonial courtroom done in the “Chippendale Ionic style,” the Francis Catania Law Library where there is a display of six paintings that depict the historical development of the county, the judge’s conference room that has portraits of the county’s first judges, and the exterior of the Courthouse, which includes a towering monument to the “soldiers and sailors” who fought in the Civil War.
Members of the public are invited to attend the public screening of the film at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. The screening is free, but people are asked to pre-register by emailing your name to DelcoPR@co.delaware.pa.us.

National security expert speaks in Delco Sept. 11

The Delaware County Patriots will host a national security expert to talk 7 pm Wed. (Sept. 11), a date few Americans  will ever forget.  September 11th is the anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York by radical Islamist forces where thousands of Americans died in one day.  September 11th is the anniversary of another attack—again by radical Islamist forces—of our consulate in Libya.
Dr. Bucci has said, “The American people deserve the truth.  This is not a partisan demand, but on a number of issues, answers have been incomplete, contradictory, or nonexistent.  That is simply not acceptable, regardless of who does it. Any light that can be shed is worth the effort.”
Dr. Steven Bucci has been at the forefront of national security issues, having held many high level positions both inside and outside of government.  He currently serves as the Director, Allison Center for Foreign Policy studies.  He is also a Senior Fellow at the Heritage Foundation for all issues involving Homeland Security and Defense.
Dr. Bucci’s distinguished career has given him an insider’s look into the world of national security, including cyber security, and the people and policies that administer it.
All are invited to come and hear what promises to be an eye opening look into what is happening in America’s national security arena today.  The event will be held at the Knights of Columbus on Route 252  in Newtown Square.  Seating is limited so reserve a spot  by calling 610-572-3442.

Gateway invites community to engage in 'The Story'

The Bible is the best-selling book in history, but how many people in Delaware County are actually reading it?  A Gallup survey reports the average American household has four Bibles. However, research by Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life (2008) found that only 16 percent of Americans read the Bible every day.
Gateway Community Church is hoping to reverse the trend, starting with its own congregation.  Pastor Gary Gaertner believes thatThe Story, a Zondervan best-seller, is the right tool to increase Biblical literacy, helping readers understand God’s story from Genesis to Revelation and how their own stories intersect with God’s.  Consisting of 31 chapters of carefully-selected scriptures sequenced in chronological order, The Story presents the word of God in an engaging format, reading like a novel.
The Story Church Campaign is a unique, FREE  program providing up to 31 weeks of curriculum for children, teen and adult Sunday school and up to 31 weeks of corresponding sermons.  When accompanied by reading through the five age-related books (The Story, The Story: Teen Edition, The Story for Kids, The Story for Children, and The Story for Little Ones), the entire church can be literally on the same page for 31 weeks. Gateway Community Church plans to begin the experience 10 am September 15 and invites the community to participate.
With thousands of participating churches nationwide, The Story is becoming a movement that is bringing wide-ranging benefits to local churches. Many have reported increased community outreach, increased Biblical literacy, congregational growth and a greater understanding of how God’s story reveals the reasons for the things that happen in man’s story.

Widener University Art Gallery Hosts FREE Exhibition of the
Visual and Literary Works of Norman Rubington

Chester, Pa. – The Widener University Art Gallery will host From the Studio: The World of Norman Rubington, an exhibition of the visual and literary works of the expatriate artist and author from August 23 through October 19.
Rubington (1921-1991) was born in New Haven, Conn. and enrolled in the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1939. Rubington left for France in 1946 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1948, he had his first one-man show in Paris, followed by one-man shows in New York, Boston and San Francisco. His work earned him the Prix de Rome, a grant from the Tiffany Foundation, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
In later years, Rubington devoted time to book illustrations and experimental films. Writing under the pseudonym Akbar del Piombo, and using collages of 19th-century engravings for the illustrations, he produced a series of satirical works on socially and politically relevant subjects. In 1965, he illustrated “The Olympia Reader” for Grove Press, working with literary greats such as William Burroughs.
Dr. Janine Utell, associate professor of English at Widener and curator of the exhibition, said the exhibition will offer a unique perspective on Rubington, who was part of the artistic and literary circle in post-World War II Paris that included Maurice Girodias, Henry Miller and Samuel Beckett.
“Our exhibit at Widener is going to take a different approach by focusing on the conversation between Rubington’s literary output, his painting and his multimedia productions, all within a post-war, American-in-Paris cultural context,” Utell said.
Selected paintings in the exhibition will offer a cross-section of Rubington’s varied output, including nude figures, cityscapes, still lifes and work that shows his humor and exuberance with form and color. In addition, artifacts on display will include editions of his books, literary magazines, letters, video of Rubington at work and paraphernalia from his years in the studio.
The gallery will host a reception for the exhibition from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, including a talk by John de St. Jorre, author of “Venus Bound: The Erotic Voyage of the Olympia Press and its Writers.” Jorre’s talk, titled “Norman Rubington: Graphic Pioneer, Sometime Pornographer, Lifelong Artist,” will focus on Rubington’s work for Olympia Press. The talk will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the University Center Webb Room.
For more information on the artist and the exhibition, visit www.normanrubingtonfromthestudio.com or www.normanrubington.com. The Rubington estate is managed by executor Ann May Greene of Wyncote, Pa.
The Widener University Art Gallery is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and.  The gallery will be closed Saturday, August 31 in recognition of Labor Day.

Swarthmore Professor Presents ‘Incentives’ at Pendle Hill

Swarthmore College Professor Barry Schwartz will present “Why Incentives -- Even ‘Smart’ Ones -- Will Never Get Us What We Need,” 7:30 to 9p.m., Monday (Sept. 2) in the Barn at Pendle Hill, 338 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford.
The talk on the social theory of incentives is free and open to the public.
Schwartz notes that it is the ideology of our age that if we want teachers, lawyers, doctors, and even bankers to do the right thing, we just have to figure out a set of "smart" incentives that enable them to do well by doing good. Forty years of research in psychology shows that this ideology is false. The only reliable way to get people to do the right thing is to get them to want to do the right thing because it's the right thing. Not only do incentives fail to achieve this goal; they actually are an impediment to it, according to Schwartz.
Schwartz is the Dorwin Cartwright Professor of Social Theory and Social Action in the psychology department at Swarthmore College, where he has taught for 40 years. He is the author of several leading textbooks on the psychology of learning and memory, as well as a look at contemporary life, The Battle for Human Nature: Science, Morality, and Modern Life. More recently, Dr. Schwartz authored the popular The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less: How the Culture of Abundance Robs Us of Satisfaction (Ecco, 2003). He is married and has two children.
For more information about the screening, visit Pendle Hill’s website, www.pendlehill.org, or call 610-566-4507, ext. 129.

FREE H.E.L.P. Services Available

Ever wish you had a friend or relative to help you with some household or personal problem that you wish to solve?  Well, you might be able to find such a person through a new program that St. James United Church of Christ in Havertown has established:  H.E.L.P.  The acronym stands for Helping/Healing, Educating/Enriching, Learning/Listening, Planning/Problem solving, and the H.E.L.P. program is the brainchild of Rev. Lynn Lampman.
Pastor Lynn has been at St. James Havertown for almost three years now, and among her many missions is for the members of the church to reach out and give to the community.  Since so many at St. James have useful skills and talents, Pastor Lynn thought that H.E.L.P. would be a great way for members to live their faith while addressing the real needs of our neighbors.  The H.E.L.P. program will connect community members with volunteers from St. James, and they will meet at mutually convenient times at the church’s lovely facilities at 135 Myrtle Avenue in Havertown.  There is never a charge for using H.E.L.P. services.
If you want more information, call St. James UCC Havertown at 610-446-3036.  Someone will answer your questions about the program and help to match you with a “talent sharer” who has volunteered to help in her/his area of expertise.  Their members have years of experience in their fields, whether it be organizing your personal finances, writing a new resume, finding the right college for yourself or your child, supporting you through a difficult patch, helping you find and develop a new and satisfying hobby, and many more.  In addition, their volunteers are especially enthusiastic.
So, please give St. James UCC a call and find out more. They are confident that they can H.E.L.P.
