Free Splash Week program at Rocky Run Y
The Y designed the
program to help children and families learn important swimming and water safety
skills, which can lead to developing self-confidence, pride and inner strength.
The Rocky Run YMCA
wants to stress the importance of water safety. Every day at SPLASH Week, there
will be different themes and water safety sessions such as pool safety, boat

Late Spring Bird Walk at Glen Providence Park
Area residents can
join the Friends of Glen Providence Park for a FREE bird walk led by cousins
and expert birders Al Guarente and Nick Crocetto 8a.m., Sunday (June 2), rain
or shine.
The Friends have
documented over 100 bird species so far in the park, perhaps they will find the
next with the help of these guides from the Birding Club of Delaware County.
Walkers should at
the park entrance at Third Street and Kirk Lane in Upper Providence for the 1.5
mile hike; be prepared for steep and possibly muddy terrain; and bring
binoculars.

Battle of Gettysburg topic of Sunday talk
Since this year
marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Nether Providence
Historical Society will host George Albany who will discuss his research into
the battle.
Albany, a graduate
of Gettysburg College, has always been interested in that particular battle of
the Civil War. Copies of maps will accompany his talk. Also, a list of Nether
Providence participants in the Civil War will be on display. The list was made
from newspaper articles of the time and the applicants for survivor benefits in
1890.
The free lecture
will be 2p.m., Sunday (June 2) at the Helen Kate Furness Library on Providence
Rd. (Rte. 252), Wallingford. The community is welcome.
Glenolden Library announces summer programs
The Glenolden
Library is holding sign ups for Science in the Summer, which will be held on
Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 18 for grades 2 to 6. This year’s theme is BioScience. This program
is sponsored by the Delaware County Library System and GlaxoSmithKline.
Summer Reading Club
will be held Thursdays at 1:30pm from July 11 to August 15 for grades 1 through
6, the theme this year is ”Dig Into Reading”.
Preschool story hour
will be held Wednesdays at 11am from July 3 to August 28, for ages 3 to 5.
Infant Story time
will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 24, 31, and August 7 for ages birth
to 2 years.
Makin’ Music will

Speakers, field trip locations needed for local
science club
The Darby Free
Library has just started a Science Club which meets on the second and fourth
Mondays beginning in June. The club's mission is to expose patrons, ages 10 and
above, to the exciting world of science through classes and field trips. One
trip planned is to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University and the
William Penn School District will supply the bus.
The Library is looking for donations of science
equipment like telescopes, microscopes, chemistry sets and more.
Also, the Library needs guest visitors who can teach
an hour class on a subject pertaining to science that will interest the
children. Anyone who can offer more free places to visit, will also be
appreciated.

Science in the Summer Registration Underway
Norwood Public
Library, 513 Welcome Ave, Norwood, will accept applicants/registrations for
Science in the Summer (SIS) during the month of May. The last day to register
is Thursday, May 30. Bioscience will be
this year’s topic and sessions will take place July 22 to July 25. Parent/caregiver must register student (no
phone registrations). SIS is for
students entering 2-6 grades. Acceptance is by lottery. Notification letters will be sent to accepted
students by June 11.
Tinicum Library presents Civil War soldier, summer reading
club
Tinicum Memorial
Public Library, 620 Seneca St., Essington, will present a Civil War soldier of
the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as portrayed by veteran living
historian, Ken Gavin, 6:30 pm Wed. (May 29). Adults and children age 10 and up
are welcome to come and meet this interesting “soldier.”
The “Dig Into
Reading” Summer Reading Club will kick-off with a fun filled show, “Dino
Dig,” with Field Paleontologists Mike and Roberta Straka 6:30 pm Wed. (June 5).
The presentation will feature Mr. Nixon, and an eight foot Triceratops skull.
The show consists of original songs, show-and-tell with unusual fossils, a
touch of magic and a "Dinosaur" game show.
The Dig Into Reading
Club will then meet on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. on June 19 and 26, July 3, 10
and 17. Pre-K through 5th graders will dig into some crafts and books on
fossils, burrowing animals, planting and rocks. Lots of fun surprises are
planned.

Delco SCORE and Chamber to host Business Plan Workshops
Delaware County
SCORE, in cooperation with the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, will
conduct a series of workshops at the Chamber's headquarters in Springfield, to
help aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners learn how to develop a
successful business plan.
Workshop I: Business
Concept & Data Collection will be held 6 to 9:30p.m., May 21. The session
will introduce a personal business plan model that gives step-by-step guidance
in researching and writing a business plan, structure, data collection, and
competition analysis. Attendees will learn about the various resources
available to help them estimate market potential.
Workshop
II: Marketing Plan Development will be held May 28. The session begins the
development of the business plan with a focus on a Marketing Plan with
workshops on product and service, pricing, target markets, and marketing
communications.
Workshop
III: Financial Plan & Projections will be held on June 4 and will
focus on "the numbers." Attendees will use a computer-based financial
tool to estimate revenues and costs, profitability, cash flow and start-up
costs.
Workshop IV: Funding
Your Business will be held on June 11. This session completes the business
plan with discussions on options for financing the business. Representatives
from a commercial bank, other lenders and the SBA will answer questions about
funding.

Annual Italian American Heritage Festival in Rose Tree Park
June 2
Thousands of people
are expected to descend upon Rose Tree Park in Media Sunday, June 2, at Rose
Tree Park from 11:30 am to 6 pm for the
Fourth Annual Italian American Heritage Festival. Admission is free.
The festival will
celebrate Italian-American authors,
artists, sports figures, automobiles, culture, heritage, food, entertainment
and more.
The Minister of
Foreign Affairs of Italy, the Italian Embassy in Washington, and the Consul
General of Italy represented in Philadelphia by the On. Consul General Luigi
Scotto, have declared 2013 Anno Della Cultura Italiana Negli Stati Uniti (The
Year of Italian Culture in the United States). The festival will be a part of this national celebration.
Last June, the
festival attracted over 10,000 people
from throughout the Delaware Valley and beyond.
Two separate stages
of entertainment will include Alfio, the Italian Heart Throb, the Philadelphia
Mandolin and Guitar Ensemble, Hot Club of Philly Band, Anthony Caserta and the
Boy in Black Band, the De La Salle String Band Orchestra, and others.
Italian authors and
artists in attendance will include George Anastasia, Brigida Michopulos, and
Ursula Ippoliti. All new this year, the
International Opera Theater will provide
a special performance featuring selections from the new lyrical opera, Jago,
direct from Italy and its premier opening at the Media Theater.

Free Chair Yoga at Aston Library
Free Chair Yoga will
return to the library in June, with classes on Tuesday nights. Chair Yoga

Democracy Unplugged to present forum on liquor store
privatization
Should Pennsylvania
privatize its liquor stores? That will be the topic when Democracy Unplugged
presents a forum on Pennsylvania’s liquor stores.
The event will take

Mawr Ave.
The
Anti-Privatization speakers are PA Senator Daylin Leach (D-177th) and Wendell
Young, IV, president of the UFCW.
Katherine Anderson,
director of Government Affairs for The Commonwealth Foundation will be
joined by another speaker to be announced for the pro-privatization side.
The four speakers
will present opening statements, followed by audience questions and answers,
and closing statements.

Folksinger performs
Folksinger Mary Roth will entertain at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4 at the
Upper Darby/Sellers Library, 76 S. State Road in Upper Darby. Audience members will enjoy an interactive
concert for all ages including songs from around the globe as well as familiar
tunes.
Roth is a notable vocalist and songwriter who has performed at the
Philadelphia Folk Festival, the New Jersey State Film Festival, the
Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair, the Philadelphia Flower Show and numerous other
venues. She performs with an Appalachian
Mountain dulcimer, Celtic bodhran drum, guitar, shekere, and various other
instruments of culture.
